Chapter 2
Completely random triggers lead to this, items that create deja vu, none more than the memory potion was the main culprit of these. Madame Alsika says to ignore them, that they are nothing more than the dreams of a childhood I wished to have. "It does not do well to dwell on fairytales and dreams, they hold you back from your true potential." I recall her saying time and time again. But no matter however often she would say it I couldn't say goodbye to the dreams, they were the only hope I has left for a better life.
Apart for the others this one felt different, most of the dreams never made sense anyway and felt so distant they couldn't be anything more than dreams, but this one felt so real. As usual I was the little girl again, I never saw what I looked like, I just hung on for the ride as I watched her life unfold before my eyes. Most of the dreams were small little glimpses of childhood fun, nothing much but they would knock me out for hours on end so it was never good to see them in a task. I still never understood why Madame Alsika didn't like them, what's the harm in a little girl's life; but Madame Alsika always made a point to ask what happened.
I, well the little girl, was running through the woods as if being chased. Fear struck through her heart as adrenaline alone wasn't giving her the energy she needed to get away. Our hearts pounded as if they were about to explode, but she couldn't stop running. We kept looking back scared someone may catch us, but who? Our feet were bare leaving them painful with each step, but that didn't stop us. Gritting our teeth we shouldered the pain just so we wouldn't be slowed down. But as figured one small root and we collapsed face down into the dirt. With a twisted ankle the last thing we could do was turn over as a dark shadow fell over the sun with a tall silhouette infront of it, and we just screamed. Through the screaming one small whisper emerged, "Alteria."
"Ter, are you alright?" Madame Alsike shook me until my eyes opened. WIth an open mouth I understood why she looked worried, I had been screaming with the little girl for who knows how long. "It was another dream, I told you,"
"It does not do well to dwell on fairytales and dreams, they hold you back from your true potential." I recited trying to not sound as if I was mocking her.
"Ter, what was it this time? You said these were always pleasant and now you're screaming on the top of your lungs." Madame Alsika was failing miserably at sounding concerned. Her regal appearance and stiff attitude held together no matter what, but talking about the dreams was the only time she would listen to what I say.
"I was,"
"She was."Madame Alsike corrected without hesitation as she smoothed down her skirt, not that she needed it. Every inch of her always had to look perfect, she wouldn't allow herself any other way, even her silver hair was tightly woven in the most pristine bun you'd ever seen. Even her red eyes held perfection; when she was younger and an assassin it had been an injury that blood stained her eyes, and somehow the blood stained only her iris perfectly.
"She was running through the woods, terrified. Then she tripped as someone was coming after her. I didn't see a face for who was chasing her, just panic throughout her mind." I tried to simplify it without going into too much detail, as I have before.
Madame Alsika's perfectly commanded face showed a second a fear as she looked into my eyes. That one second, her image changed, from being such an all mighty woman impenetrable by anything to human. "Is there something wrong?" I tried to say the words carefully, Madame Alsika was know as the woman with no weaknesses, I may be one of the best assassins but she still scared me.
"I know it's too late to hide it, and I probably should have explained these dreams to you. That little girl was you." My heart skipped a beat; the little happy girl with a perfect life that gave me hope of a better life for me was me. Sure that makes sense, why not. "I know but just listen. You're affected by the memory potion so much because I once gave it to you when you were young. That little girl is your memories, and she once had a happy life. I was hoping you'd listen to me and fight these dreams before you reached this point but I see I failed." Wow, those words out of her mouth, if only there had been a witness. "That was your father coming after you. You've only seen the good memories, your father was abusive. He was coming after you again and that's when I found you. You were so scared I thought it best to hide your past and take you in. Allowing you to become an assassin in order to keep your mind from wandering back to the memories."
"No one has ever been known to remember after a memory potion, how am I so different then?" I asked trying not to overwhelm myself with emotions, how the assassin side of me would be so nice to hide me right now.
"It may be due to you were one of the first recipients for the memory potion and it could possibly have a time limit. But I believe it's because of your gift. As you know the miotrescle gives you what you want most, at the time you were a confused little girl and your gift may have been to help you remember. Why I don't know, you were confused little girl, if I would have waited for the miotrescle maybe your gift wouldn't be so much of a disgrace." Madame Alsika always made it a point to put down my gift as an enemy to what I do, the complete opposite. "But now comes this question, the memory potion gave you this last memory, why did you use a memory potion at all?"
"Lord Cralmon's son Matthew was a witness, I erased his memory and left him unconscious." I was straight forward, she never like the memory potions, called them a waste.
"And why didn't it occur to you to just kill the boy? He was five years old, surely your abilities could allow you to take care of him with ease. Or are you falling weak to that conscience of yours?" Her tone became threatening. "You have one job and one job only and that is to kill, there is no room for a conscience. The boy was involved, once he figures out the truth he will take his father's place and it will have to start all over again. You should have just killed the boy to save the extra time. Now I'll have to send a cleanup grew to take care of another mess before our benefactor gets word and decides not to pay us." Madame Alsika always had to make everything over the top. He was a five year old boy, though Madame Alsika has probably killed babies and smiled. "And what of Senjore? He never reported back after you two split up to cover the assignments."
"He's dead, long distance arrow during one of our meetings. Senjore told me thought he had been followed and was worried about his last assignment but wouldn't tell me what that assignment was. I couldn't pass on the news to you so I hurried and rushed into the assassination of Lord Cralmon as soon as possible."
"Very well, I shall find something to tell Senjore's father, and now you know the rules." It sickened me how calm she was over this.
"Never mention him again, but before that comes into focus; how dare you!" I surprised myself as the words slipped out, and she was livid.
"How dare you speak in such a tone to me, you owe your life to me!"
"You don't even show a shred of remorse that he's gone! I don't care how many lives I owe you that is sick!" I shouted back proud of myself for standing up to her for once.
"Your an assassin, you should understand to keep your emotions in check. We've lost assassins before it's not a first. Senjore is now gone and we will follow suit as we always have." She calmed her voice and looked away.
"How can you be so heartless! He's your son!"The last part slipped out. I covered my mouth as fast as I could but it was too late. Madame Alsika's piercing red eyes now glared at me. No one knew, that had been a secret that Senjore entrusted to me alone. I didn't know what to expect her to say, she was a boiling volcano with the eyes of the devil.
