Chapter 1
Knock, knock, knock. Three deep breaths, allow her to take over. Knock, knock, knock. Hide the blade, put your hood up. Knock, knock, knock. "Enter" sounded beyond the doors.
One more breath and she took over, I pushed open the door and saw my newest victim. I let the doors fall closed and held my stance, hand on my knife at all times. "Yes what do you want?" Lord Cralmon finally looked up. "Oh, I'm sorry physician, please do come in, take a seat. I was unaware of a visit today, who exactly was it ou helped?" Lord Cralmon's gaze turned to the blood of the bottom of my white cloak, the blood of his guards who once stood outside his door. All physicians wear white cloaks, the perfect disguise for an assassin, no one would think twice about blood on a white cloak.
"Is there a problem physician?" Lord Cralmon wondered why I hadn't moved.
With very small steps I approached his desk, his eyes ready to cry out in tears, what's his weakness? From the safety behind my white cloak I extended a note and place it in front of him. Though his spectacles he glanced at the note, "I see, so could you tell me one thing. Who wishes me dead assassin?" His attitude changed as a side glance showed me his sword wasn't on his person, perfect. "My final wish and you refuse to grant it for me?" He was stalling. "Surely even an assassin must have a sliver of a conscience, oh wait that was ripped out of you along with your heart." He was trying to be smug. It was a usual tactic, trying to buy some time with wasteful banter. "Exactly how much blood coats those cold hearted hands of yours?"
"Stop wasting your breath." I didn't move an inch.
"So a female was sent to kill me, that's new." His worry faded as he roared with laughter. "So do tell me great assassin, with what pretty pink corset does plan to take away my breath?"
I watched and listened to every insult, it only made my job easier. His doubt in my ability made me stronger, opened up availabilities. During his insults he carefully snuck over to his sword, I allowed him at least that. I guess I just like playing with my food, makes it more easier for her to be in control.
"Well time for jokes is over I guess." Lord Cralmon unsheathed his sword. "I charge you with treason and your punishment shall be death by my hand." I still hadn't moved a muscle, even with him starting to circle me like a vulture.
"Funny, I was about to say the same thing." I spun on my heels to face him with my small knife drawn close to his neck. His sword was pointed directly to my gut.
"Seems like we're at a stand still." Lord Cralmon smirked, still believing he was going to win, common when my victims know they're fighting a female. Every single one. All two hundred thirty seven victims, well ninety six assignments, the rest were casualties along the way. I still remembered each of their faces on those who didn't have to die, the innocents. I never felt guilty about my assignments, but those never fated to die at my hand was the only thing in the world to make me feel guilty. "Well looky here," Lord Cralmon chuckled. No please come back, I can't do this without you.
Moving his sword he swung my hood from my head. Upon seeing my face he jumped back, his eyes completely scared. The only thing he could do was mouth one word, no. Before the chance for anything else a small creak alerted us both to a small boy standing in the now open door. "Papa??" The boy cried.
No, any other weakness, anything but that. But there is no other way. With one step toward the boy Lord Cralmon grabbed my shoulder and threw me against the ground. "Matthew, run!" Lord Cralmon cried.
Just in time she took over, the part of me that hides all forms of conscience and emotion, the part of me that is the assassin. I swung myself and knocked Lord Cralmon to the ground. Taking his own sword I slammed it down into his knee leaving him screaming, "Please! Just leave him alone! He's done nothing wrong!"
Blocking out Lord Cralmon's cries I found myself standing about the child, he was no older than five years old. I had to follow the code and do as I must, leave no witnesses. "He's just a boy!" Lord Cralmon was crawling across the floor but not quickly enough.
The boy's jet blue eyes made my heart yearn, so my two halves came up with a compromise. "Close your eyes." I said gently to the kid. Shaking in fear he closed his eyes, at such a young age he was accepting the end. I raised my knife high against young Matthew's head. He collapsed within a second. "How could you murder an innocent let alone a child!" Lord Cralmon's tears erupted like a volcano hot with furry.
"He's only unconscious and that's all he will be, I promise you that." I pulled out a small vial from my belt. "He won't remember any of this, no child shall see their parent murdered." I poured the contents of the vial into his mouth, but a single drop fell onto my finger.
Instantly I tried to shake it off, no I can't deal with this now. Not in the middle of an assignment. Lord Cralmon notices my fear. "Why?" was the only wore that escaped his mouth.
"Why what? Why did I become an assassin?" I shook my head fighting off the small pain that seemed to start growing.
"What happened to you? How did you end up like this?" Lord Cralmon seemed concerned about me.
"This was never my choice." I still was looking at Matthew.
"Of course not, but you're here. Now you can return." Lord Cralmon made no sense; but he understood this wasn't my choice, how?
"This is my life." I lifted my left arm and threw my knife into his forehead. Blood stained the floor as I watched him bleed out as he drew his last breath.
I lifted my hood and started to make my way out of the castle. Turning one corner I nearly bumped into one of the guards. I jumped back careful that my cloak hadn't shifted. "Physician, is everything alright?" He noticed the blood.
"Sound the bells, Lord Cralmon has been murdered, young Matthew lived but is unconcious." I stated and continued on. I listened as the guard went running, he fell for it. No one would ever doubt my white cloak.
The bells alerted the townsfolk as I exited the castle, everyone would know why blood stained my cloak but they would think I helped instead of murdered. I kept my head down as many people bowed their heads moving out of the way for me.
"Mistress?" My carriage driver opened the door for me.
"Excuse me." I felt a tug on my cloak. Looking down a little girl with tear filled eyes pleaded. "Can you help her?" Her cry was so frail as she coughed between sobs. Her eyes red and puffy, with her blonde matter hair dripping with tears. "Can you bring her back?"
It shattered my heart to see her cry. Hope had fled her eyes, i sunk down to my knees to be level with her. It hurt her, whatever she was crying about. Her eyes, the same saud terrified eyes of the Lord's son. They haunted me.
"Abby!" A man ran over, "Thank heavens you're safe." At first glance he bowed his head as he scooped the little girl in his arms.
"Daddy she can help!" The girl whined with her pleading and hopeless eyes.
The man's face was as pale as a ghost, he too had been crying. The same blonde hair, green eyes, and tattered old clothes between them. They were farmers; more like slaves, forced to work tirelessly on end for Lord Cralmon's behalf. Lord Cralmon, abusive and greedy with power. Thousands have died serving him, all leading to his blood being spilt. He deserved it.
"I'm sorry to have bothered you miss. She''s just a child and doesn't understand." He turned away.
"Take me to her." My voice jumped out uncontrollably. They had seen loss, more than one should.
"Her mother is dead. There is nothing you can do. We apologize for wasting your time miss." He left as a single tear ran down my cheek.
"Mistress, we must pick up Madame Alsika along the way. She won't like us being tardy." My carriage driver informed me.
Whipping the tears out of my eyes I climbed into the carriage. With all windows shut I pulled off thee blood stained cloak. My long ebony hair rolled along my back feeling as pure silk against my neck. Tears still escaped my sea green eyes as the pain in my head grew too hard to control. I allowed it to consume me as my eyes fell heavily closed.
