I looked up from my note, my eyes watery. I refuse to cry so I try to focus on zippering up my bag. I feel a hand on my back,"are you ok?" I immediately recognize the voice of Orion.
I sigh and pick my self off the ground pulling my bag with me. " Yeah I'm good, I just got a note from my parents."
"What did it say " Sophia said hobbling over to me with Calix behind her ready to catch just in case.
"Apparently the GLS had changed, schools are letting kids come four days every week."
"Wonder why, their must be a reason to it." Orion muttered. I nooded in agreement.
"Is that all it said?" Calix spoke up.
"Well my parents said that this would be the last time that they could communicate to me" it kind of makes me wonder if my parents knew that they would have to give me up.
"I'm sorry" Calix said.
"Don't be, you did nothing wrong. I just hope that all of your parents are fine." I looked away and scanned the the hills for the big tree that we were headed to.
Orion chuckled,"I really don't understand how you can be worrying for us and our parents, most people right now would be crying out of worry." I shrugged my shoulders and started my walk back to the trees. "I know my parents will make the right decisions."
When I looked back I almost laughed. Calix was arguing with Sophia about she should get on his back. After a couple minutes Calix had won the argument and soon had Sophia on his back. I turned back to the forest, I could here the others following, but one pair of feet went faster.
I looked to my side to see Orion walking at the same place. His hair had turned a light brown from the rain, and dripping slightly. I can't imagine how much of a mess my bun was in right now. I reached up and felt my hair, if I had to be honest I'd have to say that it felt like a soggy flat pancake. I yanked my hair tie out and shook my hair. Orion chuckled to my side and muttered something about a dog.
I looked up to the trees and in between little gaps I could see that the sky was now darkening and the storm clouds were slowly going away. I was suprised, I though the rain was hard enough for a thunderstorm but I guess the fates went easy on me.
"We should probably find shelter soon it's getting dark" Sophia said, making me jump out of my skin. I had been so caught up with looking at my surroundings I had completely forgotten about her. I felt guilty about her, if I had been fast enough with fighting the Warrior I could have saved her from the pain in her leg.
"There's a good spot to stay the night " Calix said nodding his head in the direction of a huge dirt mound next to a tree that made the area underneth it dry.
We made our way there, setting down all our bags. Orion had tried and failed at making a fire. This time it was my turn to chuckle,"First of all you have to make a few gaps for the fire to breathe." I reset the kindle and firwood into a tepee shape. I also took the two sticks Orion had tried to use to start the fire, and did it myself, not long after we had a fire started.
Sophia handed out granola bars, I hadn't meant to but my eyes just trailed to her leg. Sophia noticed and spoke "you had a cut on your arm to right?" I nodded, suprised. I didn't think she noticed. I pulled up my damp sleeve to examine the cut. It looked worse then form when I got it. I could have sworn that the Warrior only cut an inch of my skin, but now it looked to be about 3 inches and it was alot deeper.
Blood covered my arm, I was confused as to why I didn't see the blood through my jacket, but I relized that it was because of the dark color. Sophia gasped at the cut and immediately reached into her bag to take out medical supplies. She wrapped up my arm carefully not to hurt me. I was so glad that I had a high pain tolerance, if I didn't I would have assured you that I would've been crying. When she was all done I pulled my sleeve down blushing at how worried she had been.
I finished off the other half of my uneaten granola bar and laid my head down on the dirt floor. I don't think I've ever had so much excitement in me life, I hope the rest of my days are like this.I smiled and rolled over bumping into Orion. I was going to apologise but when I saw that he was sleeping I just smiled and closed my eyes.
Unfortunately my luck didn't last long enough. Like all other kids between the ages 10 and 18 we had dreams. 90% of kids that had dream got rewarding, pleasant dreams but the other 10% had to deal with the insanity and horror. If most kids had nice dreams the others would have to have the torture dreams in return. But not all children have the dreams just because they were unlucky, the children can get dreams if they are injected with a syrum. It's really uncommon though, parents don't inject it unless they're planning to send their kid to the government army or they just hate their kid in general.
If you were really lucky with an injection you could have abilities. You might be thinking wow abilities I want that, you really don't. I've heard rumors that if you get an injection you have a 75% chance of dying within the first 5 minutes of injection If you're between the ages 1 to 20. That's why the governments of the world have tried to destroy all syrums within the U.S.A. to England. So far Russia is the only country that hasn't given in to destroying their syrums.
My dream had started off with me running through the woods in attempt to save a woman screaming for mercy. I've had this dream multiply times but in the end I always failed to find the woman. Everything on my body burned, but I kept going, determined to save the woman. The forest sticks gave me scratches all over my body, at one point I even fell to the ground causing my ankle to twist in the wrong way
Then everything disappeared, a moment in my dream everything seemed to go away and turn calm. I could here someone humming and patting my head like my mother did when I was a child. The peace didn't last long, my surroundings changed to a shadow on my bedroom wall.
I could see a little boy this time in the shadow, I could heard a man telling a story on how the little boy was killed by his father. Alwhile the story was being told I was forced to watch the shadows on the wall play out the scenes. When the knife plunged into the little bit I woke up with a gasp. I put my hand over my heart to feel my my heartbeat at an alarming rate.
I looked up to see that the sun was starting to rise. I sighed as I leaned back on my hand looking at the sky in a trance. I was shocked out of my trace when something moved next to me. Orion seemed to be having the same problem I had.
He was sweating profoundly and moving his lips into the shape of words. I laid my hand on his hair and started to pat it gently, like the way I was comforted in my dream. Orion's breathing slowed down, he slowly opened his eyes confused.
I stared back at him with confusion as well, I blushed when he noticed my hand on his head. I quickly removed my hand and looked away. "Thanks you woke me up from that nightmare, well actually you made it disappear." Orion whispered.
I glanced back to him,"you never told me you were one of the 10%." He shrugged "you didn't either."
My expression changed, and he noticed so he continued. "I woke up last night, you were shaking and muttering about a woman. I didn't know what to do so I just painicked and patted your head much like what you were just doing, I feel asleep when you calmed down though."
"Thanks for doing that." I paused,"Will you do me a favor and not tell Sophia or Calix, I don't want them to worry about me" Orion nodded and got up
"Well I need to go number one so if they wake up just call for me." He waved and walked out into the forest. I laughed, for once in my life I might actually be able to make friends.
