Chapter 7

A sudden rumble came from the upstairs balcony. That was the second way you can get in, to spectate a Court case. Grayson, Ambros, Somers, and I all went back to back. The door upstairs suddenly was filled with holes. We started to shoot at the two doors that suddenly broke down.

Xenos started to flood the balcony. We took one by one out. Some of them were tough to hit, they hid behind the pillars. One soldier in the room was shot in the chest. For a second, time started to slow down. Slowly a few of the Xenos fell lifelessly. It was like gravity and time stopped. My sword started to slow once again. The lining of the sword started to glow a bright blue. I started to run then took a step on each of the dead Xenos like steps to a staircase.

I sliced the bullets that were flying at me. And finally got to the balcony. I sliced the throat of each Xeno. One of them I split their gun in two. Then the body in half. The Xenos bullet's were made out of some type of hot beam that I could deflect. The blood was a jet black colour, that was a slow motion splash. Small particles from the railing were broken and slowly hit the ground. I ducked when time and space went back to normal. They stopped shooting when they noticed there was no movement.

"Ronin? How the fuck did you get up there?!" Ambros's voice suddenly went high pitch.

"I am not sure, I think it has to be something with the cells or the sword." I hollered, I raised my chin off the ground. I used my elbow to lean myself up, then onto my feet. I wiped my blade on my sleeve.

I jumped down, it was only a seven foot drop.

Somers gave me a charming smile that made my heart flutter lightly. I gave him a half smile, in return. Then focused on the soldier that was looking after the one that was down. My eyes travelled over to the wounded Soldier.

The wounded one leaned against the wall and kept coughing. I knew this wasn't good. I walked over to him and his friend, next to him.

I walked over to them. It was so quiet...I could hear my own footsteps on the wooden floor. It felt somewhat awkward.

"What's his status?" I knelt down next to the two.

"The beam thankfully missed his heart. It's heat is deadly enough to go through human skin, Commander." The guy next to him said.

"What did it hit then?" I mumbled enough for them to hear. The soldier on the ground took out a stack of letters from his loved ones.

"Alright, you two are on the next flight out of here. Let Echo and I take care of the enemy for now. Can you stand?" I questioned after my statement got through to them.

He gave me a nod. I held out a fingerless gloved hand, offering to help him stand.

He grasped onto my hand and stood up. The soldier put away the letters and gave me a nod.

"When was the last time you boys slept?" Grayson questioned from the entrance of the Courtroom.

"Tuesday, sir." It was already Friday as it was. No wonder, the Xenos must have hit them hard.

"Shit. Somebody has to Escort them back to base-"

"The Reborn are rounding up civilians, moving them to the drive in of the outskirts of town. They're going to kill them or worse." Somers piped up to Grayson.

"Alright, I'll take Ronin and Somers to check it out." Ambros suggests, and Grayson sighs.

He knew he had to take the soldiers with him on the way out. I guess he was worried about us up against the Xenos or what they say now, Reborn.

"I don't want to leave you guys, it's risky." Grayson says with a long sigh. I noticed a strand of hair that was sticking out from my hair. I quickly fixed that.

"No, it's alright. I'll watch over the two. We will stop when we are halfway down town, then take at least a two hour rest."

"Damn you are starting to sound like my mother." I mumbled making Somers smirk.

"Maybe so, but someone has to keep you two in line-"

"Ambros, that's her job." Somers nudged me with his elbow, gently.

"That sounds like the plan, Ambros. Lets take the flood canals, so we aren't seen through the streets." Ambros raised his eyebrows for a moment.

"That is actually better than what I've got planned."

"Cool, let's get moving then." I replied to Ambros.

"That's our gal, lady's first." Grayson said with a bright smile.

"See you back at camp, Grayson." I replied, patting him on the shoulder. The building was an incredible mess and was going to need a clean up. The walls had holes in them, glass was shattered, the railing was unnoticeable, and so much blood.

My job was difficult, no doubt in that. Pulling the trigger on a gun, was difficult. Yes they may be the enemy, but they must have had someone to go home to. Someone's brother, father, son. I considered everything I have done for the past five years just a job. I tried not to think of it.

I wasn't married, nor had a family. I considered everyone here with me on the team as family. Sometimes I thought I saw the world through a bitter stare. We exited the entrance, quietly shutting the door behind the last person.

I joined Echo Squad because I had nothing to leave behind. Indeed it is somewhat harsh to say. But if I could just find the man who did that to my family. I would hesitate to kick his ass.

The sky was black and no stars shined that night. Small chaotic electricity surged through the clouds. Somers took the lead. Suddenly I heard a sound that made me turn around.

"Ronin, come here for a second." Ambros whispered.

"Somers, slow down for a second. Keep watch for a moment." I called out to Somers. He was further ahead of us on the pavement already.

Somers gave me a wink and I gave a half smile when I turned to Ambros.

"You're seriously falling for that? Ronin, he says that they made him stronger. 'He' believes that, and he's been in a hospital for a while, the mental kind." I turned my back for a moment and crossed my arms. Slowly, I turned around.

"What do you mean, Ambros?" I whispered quietly. I bit my lip, I was unsure if this was true or not.

"He knew what state you were in. A Coma, fevers, rapid eye movement. Colonel Greens wanted to pull the death card. Doctor Weis was the one who vowed to keep you alive. Somers asked to see you, but of course they didn't allow visitors. He isn't okay, even here."

"You knew?" I questioned, he put his hands up in defence.

"Not until we found him wandering on the streets. He told us someone broke him out...It's difficult as it is to break out of the facility underground. Just watch your back, and if you won't do that, then I will." I inhaled deeply then exhaled.

"He's fine, Ambros. Just give it a bit of time and don't act freaky deaky around him." He gave me a small salute as a yes.

I started walking away from Ambros. I could hear the frustrated sigh escape from him. We started to make quick movement down the roads. We kept high alert up, checking literally everywhere with our eyes. Rooftops were mainly where the Xenos snipers would set up their assassinations.

The streets were quiet, we knew that they were hiding. My legs ached, we have been walking for over 4 hours. Shivers crawled up my spine. They didn't give me my bullet proof vest today. Only my gun. I should have taken a visit to the armoury, I regret my decision. I started to slow down on walking. We took a turn towards the alley ways.

I placed my hand on the wall of the alleyway walls. I bit my lip as my arm started to sting. It felt like a small burning pain. I growled to keep the pain from my thoughts.

"Ronin, you alright?" The second Ambros questioned that my ears started to ring. It was like I was underwater.

I knew I was probably going to yell because I couldn't hear nor hear myself.

"Alright, we'll give you a moment." I read the lip sync of Ambros.

"She's not doing well, Ambros. And you said she woke up this afternoon, not tests or anything?" Somers questioned as my hearing started to come back.

"I don't know what 'Grayson' told you man. But I was in our vehicle until I was surprised she woke up." Ambros made finger motions for invisible quotation marks.

I knelt down for a moment and stared at the ground, hearing this language that was completely unknown. He was stuck in my head for a bit.

"Alright, we'll take shelter in an apartment. We have twelve hours to get there to those Civilians, we will take five hours of rest." I felt like Ambros was taking my job. At least it wasn't Peirs, I couldn't stand that man. I usually put on the act around him. But for some reason, it's been peaceful without him. He was an extremely noble man, honourable. But just by gender roles, he treated me worse than the men on our team.

I stood up then my gaze went up. The only way we were going to get into the apartment was: the fire exit. Knowing that I did not wish to go through the front.

I placed my sword back into its sheath. I reached for the metal railing. I pulled myself up one by one. I leaned my weight over the railings. I did not feel my muscles sting going up to the next railing.

There was a window that was open. The two followed my lead from on ground level and started to climb. I ducked my head down, placing one of my legs through the window. I pulled out one of my hand guns. I turned the safety off and passed the kitchen.

The place was untouched and clean. The blue walls of the apartment reminded me of home. The apartment was small. The entrance was close by when I passed the kitchen. There was a small living room space next to the kitchen. Two bedrooms on the left hand side of the place. Then at the entrance was a small bathroom and a closet. Everything was clear and untouched.

I placed a finger on my ear piece. "Clear and well kept." I heard a chuckle from the ear piece.

At least Ambros doesn't have to deal with a filthy living area.

"Ow." I heard someone say, hitting their head on the window. The voice belonged to Ambros.

"None or less, nice choice." Somers said, placing my gun on the counter. The boys started to dig through the kitchen for resources. The faucets did not work, but I was fine with that.

I walked through the master bedroom. I saw a couple pictures of a small family of four. My heart ached, it reminded me of my family. I was hoping they were proud of what I was doing now.

I sat on one side of the bed and stared out the window. No electricity worked in this apartment. Ambros mentioned earlier many people left for evacuation.

The sky was still the same electrical currents flashing one by one. The rumble of the thunder reminded me of my brother playing the drums. The reason I am here is because I want to fight for something that's worth fighting for.
