Uncle Nick's Advice
Romeo walked through the door to his house and put his backpack down.
"Nick," Romeo shouted as he searched for his uncle around the house.
"I'm in here, kiddo!" Uncle Nick's voice came from the kitchen. Romeo followed it to find his uncle standing on a chair and changing a light bulb. "What's up, kiddo? How was school?" He asked.
"It was okay. Listen, Nick, I have a bit of a problem." Romeo admitted.
"What kind of problem? Homework, high school drama, girls, or something else?" Nick questioned.
"Girl problem, not just any girl though. It's about Juliet."
Nick nodded in understanding. "Ah gotch ya."
"Nick, how do you get a girl to like you back?" Romeo asked curiously. Nick finished screwing in the light bulb. He scratched the back of his head. Nick sat down on the stool he had been using.
"Here's the thing, kiddo, I'm not exactly great with women. Back in high school all I had to do to get a girlfriend was to walk up to a girl. Good genes, you see, which you've already got. So I have no clue what to do if they say no." Nick gave his nephew a weak smile.
"You've got nothing?" Romeo deflated. Nick shrugged.
"Listen, kid, I might not have the experience but we both knew someone who did. I watched your dad be a pathetic dork for years, yet he was the one who ended up married. Mike used to make complicated plans to build up the courage to ask Kate, sorry I meant your mom, out. It was hilarious to watch my older brother flake out every time." Nick told Romeo. Romeo gave him a questioning look.
"If he never asked her out how'd they end up married? Did Mom ask him?" The teenager asked. Nick laughed.
"No, because it turned out that your mom was just as nervous. Eventually after years of being friends your dad just decided to stop worrying about being anything more. A week later while they were at play practice he just blurted it out. She of course said yes and the rest led to you." Nick smiled at the memory. It was nice to think of the good years with his brother, unlike the last couple Michael had had...
"So... Just be her friend? I keep getting that advice." Romeo mumbled.
Nick nodded. "Yep, just be her friend that's all I've got."
Romeo sighed. This wasn't going to help. Juliet didn't just dislike dating him, she disliked the idea of romance! Romeo didn't know how to fix that. If he tried to be her friend he would end up in the friend zone for sure. He had to help her realize that romance wasn't a bad thing.
"Nick, what do you do if a girl doesn't believe in love? How do you get them to like you then?" The young man asked his uncle who had a curious look on his face.
"Does Juliet not believe in love?" The older man questioned the teen. Romeo shrugged.
"Yeah, she told me herself. She said something about watching a woman get her heartbroken everyday for a couple years."
Nick nodded in understanding. "Ah I see. She probably scared. She's one of those girls who keep their hearts lock up so they can't get broken. I'm guessing she probably saw her mom or another close female get hurt because of love when she was younger and she doesn't want to end up the same way."
Romeo thought about it and nodded in understanding at Nick's statement. "Okay... But how do I show her that it's not so bad?"
Nick scratched the back of his head again. "Uh, hmm... Try subtly showing her that romance is alive. Be a gentleman to her. Give her a reason not to deny her feelings towards you. Start small though and don't overwhelm her."
The young man nodded slowly. "Yeah... Thanks, Uncle Nick!"
"You're welcome, kiddo." Nick said to the teen, but Romeo had already ran off. He sighed as he remembered the hard subject he had brought up: Romeo's parents.
