Romeo

Romeo had just gotten home from his second day at Locking Grove High. It was Friday.

"Hey, Nick." Romeo said when he walked through the doors of his house.

"Hey, kiddo." Romeo's uncle, Nick Cameron addressed him. "How was school?"

"Fine," Romeo shrugged. "We started reading Romeo and Juliet in English class today." Romeo smiled.

Uncle Nick chuckled. "You must be getting a lot of attention for that."

"Yep! But I'm also the new kid so there's that. The funny thing is there's a girl in my class." Romeo started.

"A girl huh? I bet there are more than just one in your class."

"Well yeah, of course there is. But this girl is different. Her name is Juliet. She hates the attention she's getting from the book."

"Hold up. You've got a Juliet in your class? While you're reading Romeo and Juliet. That's hilarious. Are you going to ask her out?" Nick joked.

"I've tried. She doesn't want to go out with me. But I'm not giving up. I think that I might really like her." Romeo said honestly.

"Oh yeah? What's she like?" Nick asked his nephew.

"She's smart, I wouldn't be surprised if she had a 4.0 GPA. And she's really witty too. A real smart ass. She's very fiery."

"She sounds great. Why did she turn you down?"

"Well I screwed up. I used to pick on her when we were younger. And well... She can hold a grudge. Now every time I talk to her I start acting like a cocky weirdo."

Uncle Nick shook his head at the teenager. "Don't screw this up, kiddo. She sounds like a special girl."

"I'm not trying to screw this up. It's just... I don't know. It's not like it matters anyway. She's good at holding a grudge. I don't think she'll ever give me a shot." Romeo said honestly.

"Maybe you should just slow down and be friends with her first. I'm pretty sure that's how your dad did it." Nick advised. Romeo went quiet. "Sorry about that, kiddo."

"It's fine. Um... Is Mom still coming to visit?" Romeo asked in a soft tone. Nick got even quieter.

"I'm really sorry. Your Mom started drinking again. She's not coming to visit in February. I'm sorry, kiddo." Nick broke the harsh news to his nephew. Romeo's face fell.

"Oh... I'm going to watch tv." Romeo left the room disappointed. Nick sighed, sorry about the news he had just broken.

It was disappointing news but Nick noticed that only a couple hours later his nephew had a big smile on his face. The teen was sitting on the couch, texting on his phone.

"Who are you texting?" Nick asked when he walked through the den.

"Juliet" That was all Romeo said. It brought a smile to Nick's face to see his nephew smiling like that.

Five minutes later Romeo was nearly jumping for joy.

"What's got you all giddy, kiddo?" Nick asked.

"Juliet said she would go out with me!"

This interested Nick. "Oh yeah? When are going out?"

"February 30th."

Nick shook his head. "Sorry to break it to you but there is no February 30th and if she's as smart as you say she is she probably already knew it."

Romeo's face fell. "Oh yeah... I guess I wasn't thinking."

Nick felt bad for the kid. He seemed really disappointed. He didn't know the Juliet girl personally but he wondered why she didn't want to go out with Romeo. The Romeo he knew was sweet, charming, and caring. Everyone they knew said so. How was he acting at school?
