Let's be Spies: Part Two
Julie groaned a little. They weren't talking. If they weren't going to talk then what was the point of overhearing what they were talking about.
"They're not saying anything." Julie hissed into Romeo's ear. He nodded.
"I can tell. Give them a couple seconds. It's a first date after all." Romeo whispered back. Julie sighed and waited.
Eventually Anthony spoke up. "So what are you thinking about getting?"
"I was thinking about getting the Marty Burger and a strawberry milkshake." Ivy replied. "What about you?"
"Uh... A lemon smoothie and a Weir hotdog." Anthony told her, glancing at the menu.
Things went quiet again. Julie sighed again. Some one had to say something. She wanted their first date to be awesome, not full of silence. Ivy was her best friend and Anthony was a nice and cool boy. They deserved an awesome first date.
Julie glanced as a waiter walked over to their table and took their order. After he left they went back to being silent.
Julie peered at the wall to her left. She had an idea. It might cause some slight embarrassment to herself but would definitely start up a conversation. There was a modern jukebox attached to the wall. She stood up and walked over to it.
"J- Cookie, what are you doing?" Romeo hissed. Anthony shot a look in his direction but Romeo turned around quickly as he pulled his baseball cap down even more. Anthony shrugged.
Julie completely ignored him as she searched for a song on the jukebox. There it was! It was one of Ivy's favorite songs and it had been playing at Ivy's birthday in Freshman year when Julie had made a fool of herself. It made a good story and would get the conversation going at Julie's expense. A couple songs were up before Julie's, which was good because it would draw less attention to her.
A couple minutes later the song American Pie started to play. Ivy took notice.
"You know, this is my favorite song." Ivy told Anthony.
He raised an eyebrow interested. "Really? It is a good song."
"Well it's one of my favorites. It reminds me of this one time Julie..." Ivy continued on to tell Anthony an embarrassing story about Juliet that happened on Ivy's birthday which included the song on a accidental repeat, multiple bottles of Ivy's cousin's lemonade, a clumsy Julie, and Ivy's pool. Anthony was trying to keep himself from laughing too hard by the end of the story.
Romeo looked like he was about to explode from holding himself back from laughing. Julie crossed her arms and huffed.
"It's not that funny." She mumbled.
"It kind of is." Romeo snickered. She rolled her eyes at him.
"Whatever... It wasn't my fault. How was I supposed to know that Ivy's cousin didn't make regular lemonade?" She muttered. Romeo calmed down.
"I would have payed anything to have been there to see that." He teased. She rolled her eyes.
"I'm sure you've had plenty of embarrassing moments."
"Nah, I'm too cool for that." Romeo shot her a cocky grin. Behind them they heard Anthony start talking.
"That's nothing. You should have been there when Romeo started crying on the last day of seventh grade." Anthony told Ivy. Romeo's grin quickly disappeared. Juliet smiled.
"It was pretty hilarious. We had just finished P.E and our teacher had asked us to help him put some equipment away. Romeo dropped a weight on his foot. He tried to play it cool and ended up falling down the stairs. It turned out he broke a toe. Our history teacher saw him and assumed he was crying because he didn't want to leave seventh grade yet, so she comes over to him and gives him a hug." Anthony continued. Ivy was torn between amusement and pity for Anthony's best friend. Amusement won out.
"Poor Cameron." Ivy said as she burst into laughter.
"Luckily not too many people saw it. Just the two teachers and me. And Romeo's crush. Which made it even more humiliating."
Romeo's face had became a lot redder as Anthony spoke. Julie had been laughing quietly until she heard Anthony say that last line. She shot Romeo a confused look.
"But I remember that. I was there to say goodbye to Mr. Sean and I don't remember seeing anyone else there. It was just you, the two teachers, Anthony, and I." Julie was confused and it showed on her face. Who had been Romeo's crush? She didn't remember anyone else seeing that embarrassing moment.
Romeo's face grew redder. "Um... My crush was definitely there at the time." He told her. Well it wasn't a lie.
Julie just shrugged. She must have missed something. She didn't have a perfect memory after all. She could have missed something. Someone else could have been there, but Julie didn't think there had been.
"Would either of you like something?" The guy who was working behind the smoothie bar asked. His name tag read Ron.
Romeo and Julie looked at each other. "Uh yeah. I would like a strawberry banana smoothie and she would like a raspberry lemon smoothie." Romeo told Ron.
"How did you know that what I wanted?" Julie asked, raising an eyebrow. Sometimes he seemed a little stalker-ish but she knew he wasn't a creepy stalker.
"You used to bring one to school everyday in your lunch. I also know that you hate mango smoothies because once you got one in your lunch instead of your usual and I ended up, uh, well I was a jerk and spilled it on you." Romeo admitted sheepishly. He regretted how mean he had been when they were younger.
"Yeah that was an awful picture day. I've hated mango ever since. I'm surprised you remembered that. That was like fourth grade." Julie told him. Romeo was rather interesting sometimes.
Romeo blushed again. "Can we talk about something else, Cookie?"
"Maybe we should focus on spying on our friends." Julie told him. She readjusted her hat, a couple of loose strands of hair were sticking out. The rest of her hair fell out and she didn't bother fixing it. There were plenty of people with long, wavy, blond hair even if Locking Grove wasn't too big of a town.
Anthony and Ivy had changed the subject from embarrassing moments their friends have had to the date.
"So why did you ask me out?" Ivy asked. She wasn't like most girls. She didn't care about her looks, found fun in destruction, and wasn't close to normal, so why?
"I've always thought you were cool. You don't listen to others- you do what you want- I admire that. You're not like other girls. I just think that's cool." Anthony admitted. "Why'd you say yes? You don't seem like you would want to go out on dates."
It was Ivy's turn to answer. She shrugged. "You seem pretty cool and confident most of the time, but when you were asking me... You were flustered. It was unlike you. I thought it must be important to you... I didn't see the harm in going on a date. You're a cool guy. I thought why not? A date with you wouldn't be the worst thing in the world."
Julie was surprised. This was the closest Ivy had ever gotten to admitting she liked a guy.
"Here's your strawberry banana smoothie." Ron told Romeo has he set a pink smoothie in front of him. "And here's your raspberry lemon smoothie." He set down another smoothie.
Ivy looked around at the mention of the smoothie she had remembered were her best friend's favorite. She recognized Julie's blond locks.
"Julie?" She said. Julie and Romeo gave each other a look.
"Crap!" Julie mumbled. Romeo took out money to pay for the drinks, slapped it down on the counter, grabbed his smoothie (which was luckily in a to go cup), and jumped off the stool. He and Julie dashed out of there before Ivy and Anthony followed them. The two quickly lost their friends by dashing outside, to the back of the building.
"I think our cover is blown." Romeo stated.
"Ya think, Captain Obvious?" She laughed. "Well this was fun anyway even if we didn't hear anything new."
"Actually I did and it was quite entertaining." Romeo smirked. Julie slugged him, lightly.
The two finished their smoothies outside before heading home. Romeo and Julie split, going in different directions.
"So how was your date?" Hermione teased when Julie got home. Mrs. Hunter nodded, smiling.
"Yes how was it?"
"Mione! Mom?!" Julie exclaimed. "It wasn't a date!"
