Culinary Complications
Julie's favorite class, Culinary Arts, didn't go as well as she hoped. Seeing as it was his third day at this school, Julie already knew Romeo was in this class. It was when the teacher decided to move people around that this became a problem.
"Russo and Cameron, would you two please stop talking so I could continue with my lesson?" The culinary arts teacher, Mrs. Viens told the two teens in the back. Anthony and Romeo looked up and stopped talking for a minute.
"As I was saying today we will be working with our partners to make a nice simple muffin." Juliet smiled at her partner next to her. It was Emily Baker who really nice and wasn't one of those teens who let their partners do all the work. Emily smiled back. "There are two different muffin recipes, both very simple so I believe that- Russo, stop talking! Would you like to teach the class?" Mrs. Viens was starting to get annoyed by the two boys in the back.
Anthony shook his head. "No, ma'am."
"Then let me speak please!" She turned her attention back to the class. "You should have no problem with such beginner level food. I want to see that at least two out of six of your muffins turned out alright by the end of the period- Cameron, that is the last straw!"
Romeo in the back of the class had taken two toothpicks that were at their station and stuck them in between his lip and front teeth. He was making Anthony laugh by pretending to be a walrus. Mrs. Viens was not amused.
"You two need to be separated for today. Let's see... Who should I move?" She mumbled to herself. Juliet kept hoping she wouldn't change her partnership around. She crossed her fingers. "Oh yes, Baker," Juliet sighed disappointed. "Please go to the back and be Anthony's partner for today."
Emily nodded. Julie groaned. That meant that Romeo was going to be hers. It probably would have been fine if her new partner was Anthony but Romeo? Oh no... "Cameron, take Baker's place next to Miss Hunter." The teacher instructed.
Romeo swaggered his way to the front of the class and tried to act cool.
"Alright, you have fifty minutes. Please start." The teacher finally was able to say without any distractions.
Juliet decided to act professional and just get to work. After all in the cooking business you probably are going to have to work with someone you don't like at one time or another.
"So what type of muffins do you think we should make?" Julie asked.
Romeo pretended to think about it. "I'm in the mood for some youberry." He flirted.
Juliet raised an eyebrow. "Was that a muffin related pickup line?" She asked. He smirked and nodded. She rolled her eyes. "Blueberry or chocolate chip?"
"I'm fine with either." Romeo said.
"Is chocolate chip okay?" She asked. He nodded.
"Sounds great! I love chocolate chip."
"Cool, okay well let's get started then. I'll measure the ingredients while you preheat the oven." Julie told him. Each station had its own little oven which was one of the many reasons why she loved her cooking class.
"Oh come on! I can do more than that." Romeo whined. Juliet rolled her eyes.
"Okay, preheat the oven and measure out the chocolate chips, milk, vegetable oil, and flour... Please."
"You got it." Romeo nodded and got to work. "Hey you're measuring out all the sugar. Is it because you're so sweet?" He said as he finished with his ingredients.
Juliet blushed as she put muffin wrappers in the tin. Why did he always have to say stuff like that?
"Are you done measuring your ingredients?" Juliet checked. "Good." She got out a mixing bowl and poured the correct ingredients into it.
"You seem really passionate about cooking." Romeo stated. He moved onto the next step and poured the rest of the ingredients into a smaller mixing bowl.
"Yeah, so?" Juliet asked as she stired the dry ingredients. Romeo shrugged.
"Nothing I just noticed. Do you do it as a hobby or something?"
Why was he asking her these questions about herself? Was he trying to get to know her? Juliet was honestly surprised. Romeo handed over the wet ingredients and Julie mixed the dry and wet together.
"It's more than just a hobby to me. I'd like to be a chef when I'm older." Julie told him honestly.
"Really? Me too! That's the whole reason why I'm taking culinary arts in the first place." Romeo said truthfully. Juliet raised an eyebrow.
"Really? Huh interesting. Well it looks like all we have to do now is put them in the oven." Julie stated as she spooled batter into the tins. She finished only seconds later and put them in the oven. She set the timer. "All we have to do now is wait."
So the two waited. Only a minute later Romeo started whining.
"I'm bored." He complained.
"That's not my problem." Julie hummed. She smiled for no apparent reason.
"Do you want to talk?" Romeo asked.
"Not really." Julie said in a sing song tone. She felt good for some reason. She didn't know why. "If you're bored why don't go hit on some girl."
"But I don't want to hit on some girl. I like you." He whined. Julie felt slightly touched but shook it off.
"Well I don't want to date."
"Me? You don't want to date me?" Romeo asked sounding slightly hopeless.
Julie shook her head. "No I just don't want to date period."
Romeo tilted his head. "Why?"
"It's harder for people to break your heart that way." Juliet sighed honestly.
"I would never break your heart." Romeo looked her in the eye and grabbed her hand. She looked away.
"That's what the all say, I bet." She took her hand back from him in a soft way.
"Don't you want to find love?" Romeo asked. He knew it was a personal question but he had to ask.
"Love, romantic love at least, is dead. It was killed by fairy tales and the way pop culture sees sex nowadays. Girls expect too much. They want the perfect fairytale. Guys want sex and will get bored of having one partner eventually. And because of all that love is dead." Juliet stared off in to space as she said this. She seemed hopeless but believed her own words.
Romeo gave her a questioning look. "How can you believe that?"
"Watch one woman get her heart broken everyday for three years and you'll understand." Juliet told him.
The sent of chocolate started to fill the air. The muffins were close to done.
Romeo decided not to ask about the woman who had gotten her heart broken everyday.
"What about Romeo and Juliet? That's the greatest love story of all time. They killed themselves because they couldn't be apart." Romeo exclaimed. A couple of girls giggled when they heard him say Romeo and Juliet. They pointed at the two of them. Julie ignored them.
"Romeo and Juliet is a three day relationship between two teens that kills six people. They barely know each other when they get married and they are willing to kill themselves only days later. Yeah that seems practical." Julie scoffed.
"But love isn't practical! It's just love! It's spontaneous, impractical, uncontrollable, and magical."
"You sound like a girl." Juliet teased. She finally smiled at him. He thought it was a beautiful smile. Romeo decided that today was a good day. He now had a plan. Teach Juliet that romantic love exists... By getting her to fall for him.
Juliet's happiness quickly turned into worry. "Do you smell that?"
Romeo sniffed the air. A burning smell came from nearby. Both the teens' eyes widened and they looked at each other.
"The muffins!" Romeo and Juliet flung open the oven to save their grade, but it was too late. The muffins were past salvageable. They weren't completely blackened but they definitely weren't edible.
"We forgot to set the timer!" Julie groaned.
"Julie, we've still got twenty minutes. If we hurry we can make another batch." Romeo said taking charge. Juliet nodded. The two quickly hastened to create a second batch. When they got it in the oven there were still fifteen minutes left of class. This time they remembered to set the timer.
Everyone else had finished and Mrs. Viens was currently going around and looking at the muffins to make sure they were alright.
"Hurry up!" Juliet whispered exclaimed to the muffins. Romeo laughed. She shot a small glare at him.
He heals his hands up in defense. "Hey, you're talking to the muffins."
Ding! The muffins were done. Juliet stuck a toothpick in them, just to be sure, and pulled them out. They were almost perfectly golden.
Mrs. Viens came around to their station. "What do we have here?" She asked. She examined the muffins. She broke off a part of one to look in the center. It looked fine. She had a small taste. "These look perfect, as usual, good work, Juliet... And Mr. Cameron of course. A+." She said as she moved on.
Juliet raised her hand to high five Romeo. "Yes! We did it!" He high fives her hand.
"Someone's the teacher's pet, aren't they? She actually called you by your first name. I've never heard her call a student by their first name before." Romeo said raising an eyebrow.
"She doesn't normally." Juliet smiled. This time she smiled at him. Romeo smirked.
"We make a great team, don't we?" He said.
Julie thought about it. "Yeah I guess we do." She flashed him a smirk. "Maybe I'll let you open a bakery with me." She joked.
"Let me?" He asked in a light tone. "I don't know... You're kind of weird. I don't know if I want a weirdo running half my business." He teased. In reality he thought it would be a fun idea.
She playfully hit him. "Hey, I'm not the weirdo, weirdo." She was still smiling. Maybe Monday wasn't so bad after all. Maybe Romeo Cameron wasn't so bad after all.
