Nova
"Wait!" I called out as I attempted to closely follow a pretty fast moving Aubrey. I didn't think she was gonna react like that, but what do I know? Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut next time.
I trailed behind Aubrey as she made her way through bigger crowds, smaller friend groups, and idle standing parents. When we finally got to the student section, it didn't take long for Aubrey to visually pinpoint the girl in question.
"Who the fuck are you?" Aubrey aggressively asked, turning a few surrounding heads.
"I'm Britney" the girl answered as if she'd already had a run-in with Aubrey. Britney casually sized Aubrey up as she answered her. "And you are?"
"I'm Jason's girlfriend, Aubrey" Aubrey stated with evident hostility. "So take that fucking jersey off, because I know you aren't his mother. Although, you look old enough to be." I went wide eyed and so did the others sitting around us. I wasn't expecting that.
"Jason actually gave me this jersey this morning" Britney snapped back, "when I was at his house. That's right, I still see him. A pretty face can only go a long way, but not long enough when your pretty doesn't compare to Jason's standards."
At this point the game was close to ending. I looked at the time and saw there was about 4 minutes left, which made me sincerely regret telling Aubrey even more. If I had kept my mouth shut, this day would've ended smooth sailing.
"And what makes you think you're attractive?" Aubrey asked, getting in Britney's—who had an inch or two on her—face. "Being blonde only means you're a dumb ass, and maybe even a slut."
I took another glance at the time, "two minutes and forty-nine seconds" I whispered to myself. I was hoping at this point that Jason would run over here and diffuse the situation the second that time ran out, but I knew the odds of that weren't likely.
"Oh you bitch!" Britney yelled while reaching for Aubrey's hair. Aubrey had the same energy and literally tackled Britney before yanking her hair as well. Aubrey was evidently stronger, but Britney tried to use her size advantage, though it didn't really work. How this scuffle hadn't been broken up at this point was beyond me.
I was so invested in the fight unfolding before me that I hadn't even noticed the game ended, or that Jason, Nick, and a few other teammates had ran over here to see what was going on. I was startled when Nick backed me up from behind. "Don't get involved" he advised.
I nodded, but we stayed put. Nick's mom was supposed to be here, and I'm sure she was somewhere, but we agreed that we wouldn't meet her until we were both here, meaning I wasn't gonna meet her until after the game. I was excited, but I couldn't focus on two things at once, so I paid more attention to the altercation in front of me.
Suddenly, unsure of what was said or did, Aubrey emerged from the crowd and headed towards the school. Nobody seemed to follow her, and I truly did care for her well being, so I chose to. I wanted to make sure she was okay.
"Wait" Nick called out, "my mom's coming."
I paused for a second, "I won't take long" I promised, "I just wanna make sure she's okay, you know?"
Nick nodded, though reluctantly, and let me go. I dashed through the crowd of people, following behind Aubrey from a distance.
"Aubrey!" I nearly screamed out, once I was tired of Aubrey running, "can we talk? What happened?"
Aubrey stopped and turned around, "did you not see any of that Nova?" she asked harshly, as I shrugged.
"Jason has a side bitch, and she's actually pretty!" Aubrey exclaimed as she practically threw herself on a patch of grass that we had been standing near.
I nodded, "that doesn't define you" I replied, "it doesn't mean something is wrong with you or that you're not pretty. It means that Jason is a piece of shit." Aubrey looked at me as I kneeled so that I was next to her, "I'm sorry this happened to you Aubrey."
Aubrey sat up, sniffling and seeming somewhat dramatic. "Why are you being so nice to me?" she asked calmly, "I've been nothing but a bitch to you, yet you still sit here and treat me with kindness."
I shrugged, "that's just my personality" I said, "and I'm not really being kind, I'm being honest."
"You think I'm pretty?" Aubrey asked, as I got comfortable and sat so that we were both sitting up awkwardly in grass.
"Yeah!" I said, kind of shocked at the fact that Aubrey found me finding her pretty to be unbelievable, "you are. Everybody thinks you are."
It was kind of dark, but Aubrey being white helped me see her better. She looked at me with wide, blue eyes, as if she was trying to read my face. I watched as her eyes shifted, from one spot on my face to another. She was beautiful, and it was sad that she didn't even know that.
As I began to kind of zone out, just imagining a happier ending to this day, Aubrey reached in and kissed me. "Too far?" she asked, as I froze, refusing to look up at her. "I'm sorry I shouldn't hav-"
Without another thought, I kissed her back. We began passionately kissing, ranging from mouth to face, to neck, then fell over in the heap of grass. Aubrey had soft lips, and was a pretty good kisser. Her kisses gave me comfort, and I didn't even know why. I knew what I was doing was wrong, but if I'm a straight female, kissing another apparently straight female, then it doesn't count. Right?
While this encounter sounds drawn out, it was only about five minutes in reality. My phone soon began ringing, and of course, it was Nick. "Um," I trailed, looking at my screen, "I'm sorry, I need to start heading back. I forgot I had promised Nick that I wouldn't take long." Aubrey nodded, no slick expressions on her face. She seemed to genuinely understand, and even helped me up.
"Bye" we mutually waved as if we'd just had a casual encounter, before walking in the opposite directions. I'm sure that Aubrey didn't want to see Jason right now.
"That was longer than I expected" Nick voiced as I finally reached him, and who I assumed was his mother. She was a white woman with a bad looking tan, which made me believe that Nick's dad was a dark brown shade.
"I see you two have been doing a lot of kissing" Nick's mom joked, as she examined my face and gently turned my head to see my neck. "Her lipgloss is smeared and she has a hickey forming."
I mentally died at Nick's mom's words. I knew she meant no harm of course, seeing as she just met me and obviously didn't understand any of what had been going on the last few days, but I had no doubt in my mind that Nick knew, and was livid. I watched as I gave Nick's mom a faint smile, but could see a vein looking as if it were practically trying to escape Nick's forehead from the corner of my eye.
"Well, I don't have much to say right now" Nick's mom continued, "but you can come over for dinner tomorrow night if you'd like!"
I nodded, "that would be great" I spoke cheerfully, as Nick's mom gave me a soft smile in response. She did not strike me judgmental, and was very pretty. Nick had her greenish eyes.
"I'll leave you two love birds alone" she added before disappearing, which probably would have excited me had this day ended differently, but I had an idea of what was in store for me next.
"Let's go to the car" Nick suggested with a calm, clueless demeanor, as if my intuition had been far off. He wrapped his large hand around my thin wrist and began leading me to his car without saying another word. Maybe I was overreacting.
Nick
It just so happened that Nova has a hickey and smeared lipgloss after "talking" to Aubrey.
The same Nova that guaranteed me that my fear of her potentially feeling a way about Aubrey, as Aubrey does for her, was stupid. The same Nova that swore she was in love with me, and even let me take her virginity. "Livid" was an utter understatement right now.
"Are you proud of your team?" Nova randomly asked, "you guys got the win on opening day!"
I nodded, gripping the steering wheel tighter in frustration. Nova's nonchalant behavior was bound to send my emotions into a whole other atmosphere. "Doesn't that hurt?" she asked, as she examined what my hands were doing on the steering wheel.
"Sure it does!" I gave up on hiding my feelings, "but nothing I do right now can compare to the hurt of being cheated on by my girlfriend!" Nova looked surprised, probably because she had assumed that I wasn't even going to address what my mom said. She lightly bit her lip and slouched in her seat, saying absolutely nothing for the rest of the ride home.
"Bye" I forced out, as I pulled up at Nova's house, "have a nice night." Nova sighed, "you too" she let out, although you could barely hear her. I've never seen Nova like this, she was very clearly upset.
I allowed Nova to enter her house in her upset state, because I didn't know what to say or do. She cheated on me, right? So why should I feel bad for confronting her? Technically, I did the right thing.
As I got ready to drive away, my phone began blowing up with texts. This Nova stuff made me forget that the football team did parties after the first game. If I had remembered, I would've just brought Nova along with me. Right now however, it seemed that it may have been a bad idea to call her back out.
"I'll just stay for half an hour" I said aloud as I shifted my gear stick from "P" to "D."
