Chapter Twenty-Seven
Dewpaw was still watching for predators by the time sunrise came around, dew glistening on his fur and eye showing slight signs of tiredness. Inky woke up first, shaking out her black fur before pouncing on her sister, Angel letting out an annoyed squeak and soon the two kits were rolling around on the grass. This woke up the two new kits, who began mewing weakly and soon Flowerstem was awake. Dewpaw stood up from his watch post and shook out his first, scattering most of the dew from his fur over the grass.
"You should have woken me up to watch," mumbled Flowerstem quietly, licking the top of the calico she-kit's head.
"You needed the sleep," replied the apprentice, grooming one of his paws, "plus, I didn't mind." The medicine cat sighed but nodded.
"How much longer until we can start moving again?" asked a voice, and both Clan cats turned around to see Dawn slowly standing up, shaking out her long fur.
"Birdpaw!" Flowerstem meowed happily, rushing over to the former apprentice, "You're awake! How are you feeling? Any aches or pains? Have you got a headache?"
"I am fine," purred the younger she-cat, "I just want to get home."
"Is there more food there?" whined Inky, "I am starving."
"You are always hungry," replied Angel, pouncing on her sister.
"There is more food there," promised Dewpaw, nuzzling the black kit, who squirmed away, "we should be able to move once we have a little to eat here."
"Aren't we on Clan territory though?" asked Dawn, "Won't the other Clans see us?"
"We are near the edge of SpringClan and AutumnClan territory," explained Flowerstem, "AutumnClan shouldn't get too upset because we are not on their territory."
"I know," sighed Dawn, "but I just want to get home as soon as possible. It is not worth the risk of hunting when we are so close to another Clan's territory."
"Birdpaw's right," agreed Dewpaw, standing up, "we should continue towards SpringClan territory and when we get there, we can hunt. And don't worry, Inky, there is lots of prey there."
"Well, can we go now?" whined the black kit, "It is boring here and there is nothing to do, plus I am hungry."
"I think we should head off now," nodded Dawn, stretching, "we should make a sta-".
"Hang on," interrupted Flowerstem, "Dawn, your fever just broke yesterday, and you just woke up. Your wound isn't even fully healed."
"Please Flowerstem," begged the former apprentice, "I just want to get back home. I want everyone to relax and know that I am alive, especially Whiskerstar, my parents and my littermates. You can fix me up when we get back to camp, I promise. Just let us get home first."
"Fine," sighed the medicine cat after a slight hesitation, "but there are no excuses when we get back to camp, okay?" The younger she-cat nodded and rubbed her cheek against the brown and white she-cat's cheek, purring. Dewpaw smiled and both he and Dawn bent down to pick up Flowerstem's young kits.
"Wait," mewed Flowerstem and both apprentices looked up, slightly startled, "I have decided the names for the kits." Inky and Angel stopped playing whatever they were playing and padded over to join the older cats.
"The brown tabby tom will be Sparrowkit," breathed the medicine cat, "the calico she-cat will be Sorrelkit, and the silver tom... he will be called Rainkit."
"They are beautiful names," purred Dawn, nuzzlingthe kits, "welcome to the Clan, little kits."
