Chapter Seven

It was about two more days before Birdpaw left the medicine cat den, her wounds healed and leg as good as new. Well, mostly good as new, every now and then if she did too much strenuous activity, it would stiffen up and begin to throb. But that aside, she was definitely happy to be out of the den and back into the sunshine of New-Leaf. The smell of herbs and berries was just mushing her brain and she was desperate to get back to warrior life.

"How are you going?" came a voice and the apprentice turned to see Dewpaw walking towards her with a vole in his mouth.

"Pretty good," she replied, "I am just grateful to be out of the medicine cat den, I swear the smell of the herbs were making me even sicker!" The cream tom laughed and he sat down with the vole, inviting Birdpaw over. The two apprentices tucked into the vole and every now and then, she could feel him watching her but she didn't meet his gaze.

After a little while, both apprentices finished eating and were gazing at the Clan as it went around its daily jobs. Birdpaw started to groom herself but looked up when she felt and smelt a layer of embarrassment floating off Dewpaw. The tom was scuffling his paws on the dusty camp ground. His eyes were looking down at his paws and he opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water.

"What is wrong Dewpaw?" Asked the tortoiseshell and white she-cat, cocking her head to the side in confusion. The cream tom started to swish his tabby tail from side to side, not meeting Birdpaw's questioning look.

"I have something to tell you," he started, looking down at the ground again and his voice small, "I lik-" but the cream tom was cut short when Whiskerstar walked over. Birdpaw looked up at her mentor who was gazing at her with an excited expression.

"Hi Birdpaw, Hi Dewpaw," he meowed, nodding to both apprentices before turned to his own apprentice, "Birdpaw, I was wondering if you would be up to make a big journey?" The apprentice nodded and the grey tabby tom's eyes widened even more with excitement.

"Good," he mewed, just about as excited as an apprentice, "then you can come to the Moonpool."
