The Shut-in

This is gonna be my first chapter where I'm switching the point of view because I want to. Happy Halfway to Halloween. -Mal.

One night, Hop Pop sent me, Anne, Sprig, and Polly to search for supplies. "Stay inside, hide your eyes, give us practical supplies!" We chanted at Felicia's door. "Oh, you're just in time, I got one last box of nails, and they're rusty." Felicia explains as she puts the nails in our sack. "Thank you." We replied as we left. "Man, this is a workout." I sighed. "Can you explain this holiday to us again?" "It's not a holiday, guys, it's the annual blue moon shut in." Sprig explains. "We need the supplies to survive through the night." Polly added. "Huh, well, you know, we have a similar thing in our world called Halloween, we say, trick or treat, and people give you free candy." Anne explains. "Free candy?!" Polly asked. "What's the cache?" "If they don't give it to you, you get to play a trick on them." I explained. "That is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard!" Polly gasped. "Hey, kids, what'd y'all get for tonight's shut in?" Hop Pop asked, pulling up to us with Bessie. "I got a hatchet!" Polly exclaimed. "I got a first aid kit!" Sprig shouted. "I got a flamethrower!" Anne responded. "I got a rock." I added.

On our way back to the house, we drove by some frogs, carving pumpkins. "You sure this isn't a holiday?" Anne asked. "You even have jack o' lanterns." "Those are fear gourds, Anne, and yes, I'm sure, the shut in is dangerous, for tonight, the moon turns blue and anyone who gazes upon it becomes a hideous beast." Hop Pop explains. "And is this true, or just a legend, because sometimes it's hard to get a handle on what's real around here?" I asked. "No one knows, Rowena." Sprig replied. "And no one wants to find out!" Hop Pop added. "You guys are really close to us right now." Anne commented as we pulled up to the house. "Wow, so when you say shut in, you really mean it, huh?" "It's actually kinda nice, we sit by the fire." Sprig explains. "And tell spooky stories." Polly added. "And Bessie hides in her shell until morning." Sprig continued. "Cool, let's get this holiday started!" Anne and I exclaimed. "It's not a holiday, girls!" The Plantars complained. "Fine, okay." I grunted. "Now would you two grab the rest of the decorations from the cart?" Hop Pop asked. "It's totally a holiday." Anne whispers to me as I nodded. "I heard that!" Hop Pop snapped.

After we got everything from the cart into the house, we all sat around the fire. "Remember, the stories had to have actually happened, and be scary enough to remind us not to go outside." Hop Pop explains. "Okay, kids, who wants to go first?" "Ooh, I do, this is the first year I have one that's really scary." Polly said, turning off the light. "I'm telling the story of, A Night at the Inn, I was traveling with my family  on a stormy night, little did I know I would soon come face to face with cannibals!" "Uh, Polly, we were all there for that." I said. "Oh, right, gimme a minute, I'll come up with another one, someone else go." Polly remembered. "Ooh, I got one, now this didn't happen to me, but it did happen to my phone, get ready for the tale of, Phone Mo!" Anne exclaimed. "I love this story, we heard it all the time back at home!" I cheered.

Anne's POV

It took place at a school that was like our school, but not our school. And this story wasn't about me and Rowena, it was about two other girls at our rival school named, Anna and Ramona. "Yo, Anna, Ramona, what's up?" A boy asked walking up to the two girls with his twin sister. "Sup, Twig." Anna greeted. "And?" "Molly." Twig's sister replied. "Ooh, check this out, guys." Ramona said, showing all of them a skateboarding fail video on her phone and they all started laughing. "Comedy is truly peeked." "Sup, Haddie, Sup, Brody." Anna greeted two of their other classmates. "Hey, have you guys seen the latest trending cute animal video?" Haddie asked. "Show em, Brody." Brody pulled out his phone and paused for a second. "Wait, I should probably tell you people say this video is cursed and everyone who watched it has mysteriously disappeared, so, ready to watch it?" Brody asked. The four friends were unsure whether they should watch the video. "I don't know, guys, is it really worth the risk?" Twig asked. "You may be right, Twig." Anna sighed. "I'm with Anna and Twig on this one." Ramona replied. "You may be right, or you may be wrong, show me the video." Molly said as she hopped over to Haddie and Brody to watch the video with them. "Maybe we can watch a little." Anna said. "No, Anna, be strong." Ramona responded. "But look how happy they are!" Anna cried. "You heard Ramona, be strong." Twig replied as they walked into the school.

"Thanks, guys, I for one, am glad we didn't watch that video." Anna said. "Right, I'm so sick of doing things just because everyone else is, feels nice to have autonomy for a change." Twig replied as the bell rang. "Me and Twig have to get to class, see you later." Ramona waved as she and Twig left. Anna didn't go straight to class, but she hid behind a vending machine so she could watch the video. "Autonomy shanonomy, it's video time, baby." Anna scoffed, pulling out her phone to watch the video. "Man, what even is this little gremlin, cutest video ever, so worth it, wow, not a single dislike or negative comment, looks like this is the one video on the internet that everyone loves, weird."

A few hours have passed and Ramona met up with Anna for lunch. "Gonna eat my sandwich, into a square, cause if I spit along the edges, then I don't have to share." Anna rapped. "And they say I'm not talented." Haddie joined them at their table, looking frightened. "Haddie, is everything okay?" Ramona asked. "Brody's gone missing, one second he was with me, the next, only his phone!" Haddie explains. "You guys don't think the curse..." "Is real?" Anna interrupts. "Brody is probably just playing a prank on you." Ramona added. "Right, just a prank." Haddie sighed as the lights began to flicker. "I'm sure that's nothing, let us know if you find Brody." Anna said as her and Ramona walked away. Little did they know that Haddie disappeared after that.

Anna invited Ramona over to her house after school. Anna was fooling around with her stuffed animals. "And they say I can't write dialogue." All of a sudden, Anna's phone rang. "That's probably Twig, he said he was going to call." Ramona explains. Anna answered her phone. "What's the sitch, Twig?" Anna asked. "I don't know if you guys have heard, but Brody, Haddie, and Molly have all gone missing!" Twig panicked. "The video, the curse is real!" Ramona exclaimed. "Sure looks that way, good thing none of us watched it, right?" Twig asked. "Right." Ramona replied. Anna just made some weird faces. "No, Anna, you didn't." "I'M WEAK, OKAY?!" Anna cried. "Don't panic, just get rid of your phone and..." Twig was suddenly cut off by this monster that appeared on Anna's screen. "What is that?" Ramona cried. "Wait a second, Brody, Haddie, Molly, and some weird old guy?" "Hey, help me, I've been trapped in here for 35 years!" The old guy shouted as Anna threw her phone on the floor. The little creature from the video began hopping out of her phone. "Stay away from us, you adorable beast!" Anna shouted as her and Ramona threw some stuffed animals at it, but only made it grow in size. "Oh my gosh!" Ramona screamed. The girls ran towards the bedroom door, but the monster catches Anna's foot before they could escape. "Anna!" Ramona exclaimed. "You know, now that I've gotten a closer look at you, you are not cute at all!" Anna snapped. The monster was hurt by her words. "Wait, Anna, that hurt it's feelings, can't take criticism, huh?" Ramona questioned as both girls grabbed their phones and hit dislike and left nasty comments. As the comments were sent, the monster exploded, releasing its prisoners. "Welp, consider me traumatized." Haddie said. "What the heck is this stuff?" Molly takes a bite of the guts. "Hey, it's boba." Molly replied. "Guys, you're okay!" Ramona exclaimed as her and Anna hugged their friends. "That's the last time I succumb to any kind of peer pressure." Anna added. "Well, I should probably go reconnect with my family." The old guy said, escaping from the window. All of a sudden, Twig ran up to Anna's room, out of breath. "Twig, what's wrong?" Ramona asked. "Guys, this crazy new burger place just opened on the haunted side of town, everyone's doing it, c'mon, let's go!" Twig exclaimed as they all cheered.

Rowena's POV

"The end." Anne said, finishing the story. The Plantars clapped for her story. All of a sudden, my phone went off, startling everyone. "False alarm, guys, just a calander alert reminding me it's Wally's birthday." I explained. "I'm sure he's fine, alright, Polly, back to you." "Alright, here we go." Polly said. "Once upon a time, an entire town got taken over by zombie mushrooms in a story I like to call, Children of the Spore!" "Whoa, hang on, that story's no good either." Hop Pop explains. "We were there." Anne commented. "Been there, done that." Sprig said. "That was actually Hop Pop's fault." I added. "Alright, someone else go." Polly groaned. "Okay, I've got one, and it's the scariest one yet." Hop Pop said. "It's called, dead end!"

Hop Pop's POV

Long ago when I was just a young frog, I got my first job as a wagoner, but never mind that, I had the most beautiful thinket of hair that Wartwood had ever seen. It had pounds, it had shine, it was so thick, when I ran my fingers through it, my hands would get stuck. "Enough about the hair!" Anne and Rowena interrupted my story. So one day, I picked up a very strange customer. "Whoa there, let's see here, Mr Littlepot I presume?" I asked. "You presume correctly." He responded. "Welcome aboard." I said. "Mighty obliged, we'll stop at these addresses in order if you please, and when I ask you to drive on, you do so, understood?" Mr Littlepot asked. "Can do." I replied as I hopped on my wagon as we drove off. "Now, for the matter of payment." He offered. "Oh, nonsense, you can pay at the end, if you're satisfied with your service." I explained. "My, oh my, an honest businessman, you are a rare sort indeed." Mr Littlepot complimented. "So, what kind of business you in?" I asked. "Oh, let's just say I'm in the frog business." He explains with laughter. His behavior was kinda suspicious. "The frog business, ain't we all." I said as I pulled up to the first stop. "Okay, stop number one, oh hey, this is Old Man Hopkins's house, poor guy's been laid up with red leg for weeks now." "Oh, I'm sure it won't ail him for much longer." Mr Littlepot said as he walked into the house. After a few minutes, he came back. "Well, that was fast." I commented. "Always is, on to the next one." As we went forward, I noticed a woman was screaming. "Oh, should we check on him?" I asked. "I'm sorry, Hopediah, but it's very important that we stay on schedule." Mr Littlepot replied.

As I pulled up to the next house, I noticed a snake that moved up to the house. "Is that a slaughter snake?!" I gasped. "One bite from that thing can take out a frog in seconds, we gotta warn that lady!" Mr Littlepot walked to the house. "Okay, good idea, you warn her, and I'll watch the wagon." The woman screamed bloody murder. "Time's a wasting, Hopediah." Mr Littlepot said. "But you, I heard a scream!" I panicked. "Next stop if you please." He grunted. "But, that farmer lady..." I cried. "I am asking you to drive on, are you trying to go against our agreement, Hopediah?" He asked. I nodded as we headed onward.

I was getting creeped out. "Boy, we sure are running into a lot of bad luck today, huh?" I asked, nervously. "Why, it almost seems like death is following us wherever we go." "Following, or riding in the back seat?" Mr Littlepot asked. "Stay away from me, Frog Reaper!" I cried. "Hopediah, please don't make a fuss, I didn't do anything to those frogs, I'm like you, just taking them where they need to go." Mr Littlepot explains. "Now, there's only one spot left, then this money is yours." "Well, okay, let's see here, next stop is, no, my house?!" I panicked as I held onto his leg. "Don't take me, please!" "I'm sorry, Hopediah, time's up!" Mr Littlepot exclaimed as he grabbed his scythe and was coming toward me. I closed my eyes in fear, waiting for the attack to happen, but it turns out, he cut my beautiful hair. "I'm alive?" I thought. "But then, wait, NO, MY HAIR!" Mr Littlepot grabbed my chopped off hair and put it on his head. "You've still got it, Littlepot." He said, walking away. "You still got it."

Rowena's POV

Hop Pop was crying after finishing his story. "And that, children, is how I lost my hair." Hop Pop cried. "Hop Pop, that story was messed up." Anne commented. "Total frog abuse." I added. "Eh, I wasn't that scared." Sprig said. "Oh, you will be." Hop Pop replied. "Okay, Polly, you got your scary story?" Anne asked. "Yes, there was a time when frogs lived in fear of monsters that lurked in the woods." Polly replied. We all got excited. "They had giant heads, spindly legs, and a hideous face bump!" Polly continued. "Us?" Anne and I asked. "Your scary story is us?!" "Ugh, way to spoil the ending, girls." Polly complained. "You're saying that me and Rowena are the monsters in your story?!" Anne asked. "Also, your drawing is insulting." I added. "You people are impossible to please!" Polly groaned. "Oh, I've got a story, a few days ago, Ivy and I were playing bugball on the old court in the woods." Sprig explains. "Wait, what's your story called?" I asked. "Oh, actually I don't know." Sprig replied.

Skin deep!

Sprig's POV

I was playing bugball on the old court with Ivy in the woods one night. "From downtown bug bottom." I said as I made a move. "Rejected!" Ivy shouted. But as the ball hits her, her hat comes off. "Don't look, don't look!" I looked away as Ivy puts her hat back on. "Sorry, sorry, it's just, I really hate my hair." "Well I like your hair." I complimented. "Thanks, but all the same, I'd rather just cover it up, now c'mon, let's go get our bugball." Ivy replied.

Me and Ivy walked deeper into the woods to look for the bugball. I gotta admit, I was petrified. "Man, that thing went far, we gotta be careful, we're getting pretty close to the home of the seamstress." Ivy explains. "Seamstress?" I asked. "Yup, legend says that she's a horrible creature who sucks the life out of any frog who trespasses on her property, then steals their skin to wear as clothes!" Ivy exclaimed. "What, why?!" I cried. "Nobody knows, but that's just an old fly's tale." Ivy explains as we find an abandoned house. "Oh, look at that, whoops, broke a window, better hope whoever lives there isn't, the seamstress, kidding, c'mon, let's check it out." I was getting even more scared. What if Ivy is wrong and the seamstress is real? Ivy knocked on the door, but no answer. "Well, no one's home, so we should probably just leave." I said in fear as Ivy stopped me from leaving. "C'mon, this place is deserted, let's just run in and get the ball, no one'll even know we were here." Ivy said, kicking down the door. "I think someone's gonna know." I whispered. "Eh, I'll fix it, just find the ball." Ivy explains as both of us began searching for the ball. I found a basket full of needles and yarn. "Ivy, look!" I exclaimed. "Sprig." Ivy said, annoyed. "Yes, you're right, these are very common, I'll keep looking!" I shouted. After that, I found the bugball and accidentally fell on Ivy. "Glad that's over with, OH MY GOSH, FROG SKINS!" Ivy and I tried to escape, but the seamstress came through the door. "THE SEAMSTRESS!" We yelled in fear. "Sprig, we can't get away, we're gonna have to fight it, c'mon!" Ivy exclaimed. "But it's gross and I don't wanna!" I cried. Ivy tried fighting her off, but she was knocked down. I fought it and ended up ripping some of the skin off. Underneath the skin was a frog with clear skin and visible organs. "Don't look at me!" She cried. "She's a glass frog, I've heard of this species, they're born with translucent bodies!" I explained. "Sprig, I know why she steals other frog's skin, because she's not comfortable with her own skin." Ivy takes off her hat to slow down the seamstress as we set the house on fire and escaped.

Rowena's POV

"And we never saw her again, the end." Sprig said. "What?!" I asked. "That's the end?" "I still have so many questions, did Ivy get bitten?" Anne asked. "Is that thing still in the woods?" Polly asked. "Did any of those frog skins look like my friend, Gabe?" Hop Pop asked. "I haven't seen him in a while." "Guys, seriously, everything's fine." Sprig explains as we heard knocking on the door. "Who could that be, at this time of night, during the shut in?" Hop Pop asked. "I'll get it." Sprig said. "Sprig, no!" We all shouted. Sprig still answered the door. It was Ivy. "Ivy?" Sprig asked, tapping her shoulder. She had a frog skin on her face, scaring all of us, except for Sprig, who just started laughing along with Ivy. "We got you good." Ivy laughed. "And that, is how you tell a scary story." Sprig added. "Ivy, that mask, it's not..." Anne said. "Nah, it's burlap, I made it myself." Ivy explains. "Well, that was fun, but I better get home." "Okay, just be careful out there, and don't look at the moon." Sprig warned. "Don't worry about me, I can't see a thing with this on." Ivy said as she headed home. "Well, we better board this up, wait where's Polly?" Hop Pop asked. "That's weird, she was just here a second ago." I replied. "What if she slipped out while the door was open and ran off to look at the blue moon?" Hop Pop asked. "Hop Pop, you're overreacting." Anne replied as Sprig picked up a note that was taped to the wall. "Dear fam, I slipped out while the door was open and ran off to look at the blue moon." Sprig read. "What?!" Anne exclaimed. "Why would she do that?!" "So that I can get my own scary story to tell, Love, Polly." I read, taking the note from Sprig. "Oh, that makes sense, oh crud." Anne said. "We have to find her before she looks at the moon, and transforms into a hideous beast!" Hop Pop exclaimed.

We ran outside to search for Polly. "Kids, get under the umbrella!" Hop Pop shouted. "There she is, I see her!" I pointed out as Polly was laughing maniacally. "Oh no, the blue moon has possessed her!" Hop Pop cried. "Nope, not even a little." Polly said. "Oh, what does this mean?" Anne asked. "The legend must be false." Hop Pop replied. "What a bummer, now I have no scary story to tell." Polly frowned. "Trust me, Polly, thinking a blue moon had actually got you was way scarier than any of their stories tonight." I said. "Really?" Polly asked. "I had chills, dude." Anne replied. "A monster sister would be a nightmare!" Sprig responded. "Your sister's already a monster." I joked. "My hair turned white, oh, wait." Hop Pop added. "Aww, thanks, you guys." Polly smiled. "Alright, gang, let's turn in." Hop Pop said as we all headed inside. A few seconds later, Polly joined us inside, as a scary beast. "Not a holiday, definitely not a holiday!" Anne and I screamed in horror.
