The Battle Of Osgiliath
Orcs and Uruk-Hai had already invaded the stone city of Osgiliath, the ancient capital of Gondor. Frodo and Sam were following Faramir from behind. With every step that Frodo took, he felt the Ring becoming heavier and heavier.
One of Faramir's men came up to Faramir and warned him that orcs had taken over the eastern shore and that their numbers were too great.
Sam directed his attention at Frodo. "Mr. Frodo!"
"It's calling to him, Sam." Frodo panicked. "His eye is almost upon me!"
"Hold on, Mr. Frodo!" Sam's voice became inaudible to Frodo. He didn't understand what Sam was trying to tell him. Frodo gazed back at him, with his wide, bright blue eyes in fear.
"Take them to my father." Faramir ordered one of his men. "Tell him, Faramir sends him a mighty gift. A weapon that will change out fortunes in this war."
Sam turned over towards Faramir and spoke with a raging voice.
"You wanna know what happened to Boromir?! You wanna know how your brother died?! He tried to take the Ring from Frodo. After swearing an oath to protect him."
Faramir was perplexed. "He tried to kill him!" continued Sam. "The Ring drove your brother mad!"
All of a sudden, there was a ear-splitting, high-pitched cry. One of the stone structures in Osgiliath shattered and crumbled as it was hit with a massive boulder.
"Nazgûl!" cautioned Faramir.
Frodo was put into a long hypnotic trance. His bright baby blue eyes turned a dark shade.
"They're here. They've come." he whispered, ominously.
A Nazgûl riding a Fellbeast flew over Osgiliath. Frodo gazed at it in awe. Faramir quickly snatched up the hobbits and lead them to safety. "Stay here! Keep out of sight! Take cover!"
King Théoden and Aragorn were taking refuge in Fort Eorlingas. Uruks were trying their hardest to break open the door.
"The fortress is taken." Théoden told Aragorn, doubtfully."It is over."
"You said this fortress would never fall while your men defend it." stated Aragorn.
"They still defend it." Replied Théoden. They have died defending it! Is there no other way to get the women and children to get out of the cave? Is there no other way." Théoden stood silently and heeded no attention to Aragorn.
"There is one passage." one of Théoden's men answered Aragorn. "It leads into the mountains. But they will not get far. The Uruk-hai are too many."
"Send word for the women and children to make for the mountain pass." Aragorn informed him. "And barricade the entrance!"
"So much death."uttered Théoden. "What can men do against such reckless hate?" There was no hope left in the King's eyes.
"Ride out with me!" Aragorn encouraged him. "Ride out and meet them!"
"For death and glory?" Théoden felt a sense of hope growing in his heart.
"For Rohan. For your people." said Aragorn.
"The sun is rising." warned Gimli.
Aragorn fixated his gaze at a window. A beam of bright sunlight shined through it and throughout the Fort.
Aragorn heard Gandalf's voice echoingin his head.
"Look to my coming at first light on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East."
"Yes, Yes!" cried Théoden. "The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the deep, one last time."
Théoden gazed at Aragorn with a grin on his face. "Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath. Now for ruin. And the red dawn! Forð Eorlingas!"
Aragorn and Théoden hopped onto their steeds. The doors of Fort Eorlingas opened wide and Aragorn and Théoden charged with their swords drawn at the Uruks. The two travelled down a stone stairway and into the battlefield.
Aragorn saw a bright white light in the distance.
Gandalf sat on top of a hill, with his horse, Shadowfax. "Théoden King stands alone." he called out.
Out of nowhere, Théoden's nephew, Éomer, came out and stood side by side with Gandalf. "Rohirrim!" He let out a fierce battle cry. "To the King!"
Gandalf, Éomer, and the Rohirrim charged down the hill. Aragorn and Théoden joined them and they attacked all of the Uruks that stood in their way. The Uruks were blinded by a bright, white light as the army attacked them.
At Isengard, all of the Ents began to attack the orcs surrounding the fortress. Saruman was looking down from his balcony, fearfully.
Merry and Pippin and I threw large rocks at the orcs down below. "A hit. A fine hit." cheered Treebeard. "Break the dam! Release the River!" he told the Ents.
"Hold on, little ones!" Treebeard warned us.
Merry, Pippin and I held on tightly to Treebeard's branches. An Ent broke all of the supporting beams of the dam and the dam broke loose. A giant wave of water poured out of the broken dam and into the fires of Isengard.
Back at Osgiliath, Frodo walked away slowly from Sam. "What are you doing?" Sam asked. Frodo didn't heed any attention to him. He headed over to a stone wall. In front of him, was a Nazgûl.
Frodo held the onto the Ring. Just as he was about to put it on, Sam pushed him out of the way. As they fell, Frodo drew Sting to Sam's neck.
There was a fierce look upon his face. The two hobbits looked at each other in silence.
"It's me." whispered Sam. "It's your Sam. Don't you know your Sam?" Frodo's expression changed.
Frodo's eyes turned into a lighter shade of blue and a fearful look fell upon his face. He apprehensively moved away from Sam. His heart was pounding in his chest.
"I can't do this, Sam." said Frodo, pitifully.
Sam got up from the ground. "I know. It's all wrong. By rights, we shouldn't even be here. But, we are. It's like in the great stories, Mister Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer."
"Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mister Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. Because they were holding on to something."
"What are we holding onto, Sam?" whimpered Frodo.
"That there is some good in this world, Mr. Frodo." Sam concluded. "And it's worth fighting for."
Frodo and Sam gazed longingly into each other's eyes. Suddenly, Faramir approached the two hobbits.
He crouched down and began to speak to Frodo. "I think at last we understand each other, Frodo Baggins."
One of Faramir's men, Madrill, came up to him. "You know the laws of our country. The laws of your father. If you let them go, your life will be forfeit."
"Then, it is forfeit." replied Faramir. A wide smile appeared upon his face. "Release them."
Faramir cut off the ropes that bonded Frodo's and Sam's hands together and set them and Gollum free.
