Part 28 | Boy Toy

The next morning I was startled awake by a loud crash coming from downstairs. Liam hears it too and instinctively he bolts out of bed and pulls the bedroom door open. I glance to the clock on my nightstand and see it's just after six. A bit early for Harper to be up making noises downstairs. Liam disappears around the corner and moments later I hear him say, "Jesus Colin. That was a wedding gift!"

So apparently Colin thought the two hour drive was worth it after all. I hear murmurs and then Harper's giggle and decide it's too early to get out of bed. I do wonder what wedding gift Colin destroyed of ours downstairs though. Liam comes around the corner and I see he's wearing his cotton pajama bottoms with a bare torso. I run my eyes over him as he crawls back in next to me and he scoffs before saying, "Hopefully you weren't too attached to the crystal serving bowl downstairs. Colin thought it was an appropriate cereal bowl and dropped it by the fridge." He pulls the duvet over him as I respond, "Seriously? That bowl was a couple hundred dollars. Why wouldn't he grab a normal bowl from the pantry?"

"Why doesn't Harper find a new L.A boy toy she can play with when she's in town?" He snaps and I know Colin's laid back "bro" attitude can drive Liam nuts. Over the years we've helped him stay on his feet financially and even though he always promises to pay us back, he has yet to make good on his word. I think Liam tenses up every time Harper brings him around because he's worried Colin will ask us to cut him a check before he heads back up to the beach. I pull myself into him and he snuggles up to me for warmth. I run my hands over his torso and he raises his eyebrow. I am about to make our early morning worth while when we hear Harper's giggle again and I know with those two downstairs, we'll never be able to focus.

Defeated, we pull ourselves out of bed and quickly get ready for the day. When we flounce downstairs we see Harper with her hands all over Colin. He goes in and kisses on her neck when Liam clears his throat loudly. Colin snaps his attention to us and when he sees me he says, "Good morning Ellie. Sorry about your bowl!" I notice his hair is slightly shaggier than usual but he's still tan and slender in a tank and shorts. I smirk and reply, "We'll just add that to your tab."

He grins and gives me a slight nod. Harper goes back to oogling Colin in their own little world. Out of no where I feel queasy and I was hoping my rounds of morning sickness were over. I dash over to the downstairs bathroom just in time to throw up the minimal contents I had in my stomach. Liam is right behind me and I hear Harper's loud voice, "Oh, she's pregnant!" Colin cheers and Liam glances over his shoulder as they celebrate in the kitchen.

"All good?" He asks me as he rubs my back and I nod, "I'm slowly getting used to this part." I quickly rinse my mouth out and when I make it back to the kitchen Harper is standing in the foyer with her hand on her hip. She sees me and says, "So am I helping you pack up your house or not?"

I shrug, "We need to talk to Teddy first. We can't just up and leave him behind."

"Okay, well then if we aren't packing yet what are we doing today?" She asks me and Liam interrupts before I can answer, "I have an errand to run. If you two want to shop I'll be gone for a few hours."

I have no idea what his "errand" is but I assume it's just an excuse to get him away from Harper and Colin for awhile. Harper eagerly nods her head and I have no objections. I watch as she trots upstairs to gather her things and I see Colin and Liam about to head into the living room. I look to Liam as he rolls his eyes and silently says He's going to ask us for a check.

I shake my head, We aren't working and have a baby on the way. Tell him no!

Liam nods to me and he disappears into the living room. Harper comes back down the stairs with her purse slung over her shoulder. She smiles to me and I glance to the clock by the microwave. It's just now hardly past eight and I wonder what shopping will be open this early on a Saturday.

"We are stopping at Joan's On Third so I can grab some breakfast. The shops aren't open yet." I tell her and she nods, up for whatever. I've been waiting to hear some sort of thought on her fresh divorce but she hasn't thought about it around me.

She follows me out to the car and as soon as we climb in, she puts on loud pop songs that she belts out on the ride to breakfast. She's still humming as we wait in line to order and I ask her, "So, Colin thought the drive was worth it then?" I catch her wicked grin and I roll my eyes at her, "You're divorced now, why not make Colin your main squeeze? You two always gravitate back to each other anyway."

Harper purses her lips and shakes her head before saying, "You don't marry the cabana boy Ellie. You have your fun but then you go back to your main house with your stiff husband."

It's my turn to order and I grab an orange scone and a smoothie. Harper orders a complicated latte and after grabbing our order I look to her, "So your divorce is finalized now? There weren't any issues?"

She takes a sip on her latte before saying, "None at all. We weren't in love anymore. We got married on a whim and when the sparkles and rainbows faded we knew we weren't right for each other. I need someone to challenge me and tell me I am pretty a lot. Buy me expensive just because gifts and whisk me away to Paris for a romantic weekend. Sean was romantic but too practical. He's like, we need 401k's and to pay off credit cards not throw down a couple thousand on a Mediterranean cruise."

I look to her and ask, "Did you ever get a refund on the cruise by the way?"

She shakes her head, "No, I just have a three thousand dollar credit to that cruise liner now. That was a wasted surprise."

I giggle to her as she imagines the horrible conversation that happened between her and Sean. He was horrified when he found out what she had done and that was the final straw. It was a last minute attempt to save their fragile marriage and it backfired on her in the end. After he told her he wouldn't go on the cruise she filed for divorce. Six months later she clearly has no regrets or hang ups.

We slowly stroll back to my car and between sipping her latte she asks, "So what if Teddy wants some kind of retaliation? What if he wants to get back at Topher in some brutal way? What are you going to do?"

I shrug, "I don't know. We hadn't come up with a plan of attack. We talked about going to Virginia to talk to Stephanie since both Liam and I are on break from work. We just don't know what to do with ourselves now. We have each had one goal since college and those goals have been majorly derailed."

Harper nods, "Honestly, I think Liam's goal since he's met you has just been to take care of you and support your psychotic need to be the best at everything. Working as a detective just means he can use his abilities to take care you financially in a legal way. If you didn't care about that, I feel like he would be totally fine living where ever and how ever. It's your goal that got derailed. You've wanted to be a lawyer since I've known you, this is the first thing that's come in the way of that. Everything else you've gotten in life has just been a perk."

I stop walking and look to her, "You don't think Liam is distraught over not getting that detective opening?"

She shakes her head, "Not like you will be if you don't make partner by whatever age you've decided on in your head. I know he's worked hard but I'm sure a lot of his work goals are to keep in stride with you. You'd never just let him be a police officer for the rest of your lives if there is a higher ranking job above it. I'm sure he knows that there always has to be something else to strive for.  It's not a bad thing but I'm sure there's a little pressure on him to keep up with you. Liam would just be happy with you and happy he gets to use his abilities. I don't think detective is his end all be all ya know?"

We climb inside the car again and she immediately reaches for the stereo again. I drive in the direction of the shopping center but while Harper sings loudly, I think about what she said. Am I forcing Liam into thinking he has to get to the highest point in his career? Does he even want to be a detective or does it just come next after working undercover and he knows if there is something higher and better he can be, then I would want him to work for it?

We pull into the parking lot and when the radio turns off Harper looks to me, "Did I say something wrong? You've been super quiet since we got breakfast."

I shake my head, "No, I just wonder if that's how Liam feels. I wonder if I unknowingly pressured him into our life together."

We get out of the car and Harper immediately loops her arm through mine as we strut toward the mall, "I think you gave that man purpose and direction which is so not a bad thing. After high school, all he knew he wanted to do was meet others with abilities. He now has a partner and a wife with similar abilities and met a whole bunch of them with his little stint at the C.I.A. After that what was he going to do? I just think now he might set the bar high for himself because he thinks he has to in order to make you happy."

I nod along to her but her thoughts are now at the large red "Sale" sign in the Kate Spade window. She tugs my arm as we dash across the mall but Liam never leaves the back of my mind.
