Part 13 | Unexpected News

I dump the plastic bags holding the containers of our Thai food onto the counter and my eye catches the wine bottle that's been teasing me for the past month by the stove. I flick my eyes away from the temptation and whine that I can't even enjoy a glass of wine right now. I hear the jingle of Liam's keys at the front door and I spin around to catch him strolling into the kitchen.

"Hey you, how was your day?" He asks before pulling me in for a nice kiss on the lips. After I pull away I answer, "Shitty. Kavanaugh put Tristan on the Fisher case." Liam notices my bummed expression and pulls me in for a hug.

"Awww baby, I'm sorry. I know you really wanted that one." With my cheek pressed up against his broad chest I mumble, "I worked so hard too. I hate Tristan. He has his head so far up Kavanaugh's ass..."

Liam pulls away from me and tucks my loose hair behind my ears, "Maybe you should start wearing low cut blouses to work and start sweetening up Peabody." I groan at his joke, both of us knowing I would never suck up to pervy Peabody.

"No, I'll just continue to kick ass on the next stupid public case they stick me with and hopefully I'll get the next big one," I mutter. "Since Tristan is going to be swamped with the Fisher case for at least three months, maybe something better will come my way."

Liam laughs, "Is it odd that we both want people to do horrific things so we can prove we are good at our jobs?" He makes me laugh too, which helps pull me from my shit mood. I start untying the plastic bags and Liam grabs forks from the drawer. As I hand him his order I ask, "How was your day? You sounded busy when I called you." I follow behind him past the dining table and we continue right into the living room. We both know tonight is, sit-on-the-couch-and- bitch-about-work-while-eating-shitty-take-out-food night. Which we enjoy about three nights a week, if we are lucky to see each other that often.

"It was bad. Homicide in Glendale. We were there for hours trying to find any kind of witnesses. No one wanted to talk. I was going to hang around tonight after Teddy left, but I wanted to come home to you," Liam says lovingly and we both plop down into our usual seats before digging into our dinner. Liam tosses his phone on the coffee table but I know he won't be more than six inches away from his phone at any time. When duty calls, he answers and flees.

Liam and Teddy both went to the police academy right after completing school at Pepperdine and they have been working as partners as undercover police officers for the past two years. Liam is hoping to become detective soon, so he's thrown himself into his work in hopes of being selected for a promotion. Both Liam and Teddy realize how useful it is to be able to read minds to close open cases and Liam's ability to become invisible shot him straight to the top of his class. He hangs around the crime scene after everyone leaves to search and find his own evidence. We both know our abilities are what make us damn good at our jobs but it also makes us eager and greedy to get to the top. Liam has tasted my need for perfection and now understands why I was the way I was in high school.

I'm glad Teddy stayed in our lives after the Topher fiasco and now him and Liam are best friends and partners. They like that they are both in on how they are able to solve cases and it helps to have someone trustworthy in our lives. Us three are like a tiny family and Teddy spends more nights on our couch than he does at his own apartment a couple of miles away from us.

"Well I'm glad you decided to come home to me. I feel like I haven't seen you in days," I reply before stuffing my face with noodles.

"I know, I told Teddy today that I wanted to try and take Saturday night off. Maybe you and I can go do something on a weekend for once. Go get drunk somewhere and have a nice night on the town?" Liam suggests and I muster up a smile. It sounds nice but I know it's not possible, not in my current condition.

"Yeah, I guess we'll see what are schedules look like," I answer as he smiles to me and even though we've been together for eleven years, his gorgeous grin still makes me weak in the knees. I reach my hand out to flick a piece of his dark hair from his eyes and he catches my hand and kisses the top of it. He bounces his eyebrows up and down and I know if I don't stop him now, he'll have me undressed and in our bed in seconds.

"Liam...I'm really tired," I confess and I watch his flirty attitude flutter away, "Aww, come on. We haven't had a night that we've both been in bed for like a week." He begs and I pull my hand out of his grip, "I know but I have to get up early tomorrow." Liam frowns and dramatically pouts when I stand up from the couch. He follows me into the kitchen and grabs my container to toss into the trash. After he grabs another beer from the fridge he eyes me and says, "Come on El, let's go upstairs. I'll pour you a glass of wine, we can light some candles...what do you say?" I shake my head and roll my eyes at him. I watch him spot the wine bottle by the stove and become confused.

"Is that the Chardonnay I brought you back from Napa? That was like a month ago how is this unopened? I think that's a record for you," he jokes as he reaches for the electric wine opener and I know I have to stop him before he wastes the delicious contents.

"I was saving it. I know it's good wine so I thought I'd save it for when I see Harper at the end of the month," I lie, knowing I can't confess the real reason I don't want to drink it just yet.

"Oh, well can I still entice you with candles and my hot bod then?" He asks and I let out a light laugh, "Hot bod? Oh lord, Teddy is finally rubbing off on you. I knew it was only a matter of time." I joke and Liam pulls me into him. He gives me a sweet kiss on the lips and pulls my hips into him. I hear him place his bottle on the counter behind us and he grabs my butt as he hoists me onto the counter. I wrap my legs around him as he grabs my face with his hands. I don't know why I even tried to resist it. Not being able to say no to my sexy husband is what landed me in my predicament in the first place.

***********

The next morning I bolt out of bed and make it to the toilet before my Thai food comes back up. I heave over the bowl until my stomach is empty and pray Liam didn't hear me through the door. I wipe my mouth with a hand towel that was laying on the counter and immediately brush my teeth before heading back into the bedroom.

This is the second time I've had morning sickness but luckily Liam wasn't home for the horrible first round. I see he's still passed out on his back and think back to the shoebox full of pregnancy tests I have hidden in the closet. I've tried to find the courage to tell him about my news for the past three weeks but I've either chickened out or his cell phone interrupted before I had the chance to say anything.

Liam and I had decided we didn't want kids since we are aggressively trying to further our careers, but I had so much on my mind during the Fisher case that I had forgot to go to the doctor and get my birth control shot. It wasn't until after I had missed my period, that I realized my mistake and I have been terrified to tell Liam about it since. The promotion he's been gunning for is going to be available in a couple of months and if he's selected, he can't be bothered with a newborn at home. That and I work about sixty hours a week so I don't even have time for a newborn at home.

I crawl back into bed seconds before Liam's alarm goes off and he doesn't notice my absence. He gives me a quick peck on the forehead before trudging into the shower and I lay wide awake listening to the water. I know I need to tell Liam soon because we need to decide what we are going to do. I don't think it's fair for me to make the decision on my own.

I glance to the clock and see I still have about twenty minutes before I have to get up, so I decide to turn on the TV that sits across from our bed. I flip channels until I find the news and I'm horrified at the current headline. A reporter stands in front of a demolished building with billowing smoke clouds coming from the top level. I turn the volume up to listen to the story, "The explosion happened around five a.m on the third floor of the office building. It appears that the explosion happened in a science laboratory that takes up the entire third floor. Sadly, two people were found dead at the scene. It is still unclear what caused this explosion, but the police have someone already in custody. Someone whose name has not yet been released to the public. "

Liam comes out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist and asks, "What was that?"

I look back to him, "I dunno, I guess some science lab that's part of Cal Tech exploded. Two people are dead and the police have someone in custody. Crazy."

"Yeah, I'm sure I'll hear about it at work," he mutters before disappearing into the closet. He comes out wearing dark jeans and a cream long sleeve Henley. He pushes his sleeves up and I see the edge of his forearm tattoo poking out. At first I wasn't thrilled with Liam inking up his beautiful body but now I love running my fingers over the numerous tattoos he has on his arms and chest. My favorite is an outline of the Tiffany key he bought me all those years ago for my 18th birthday on his right forearm. The edge of the key is an E and I like to see I'm visibly with him everyday.

He comes over to give me a kiss goodbye and I know with me now getting morning sickness, I have to tell Liam the news. I can't put it off any longer.

"Hey if we get done early tonight, I'll plan on cooking a nice dinner. I have something I want to tell you."

He suddenly eyes me suspiciously, "Oh do you? Well just tell me now." I've perfected keeping my mind closed and I know sometimes he wishes he still had full access like he used to.

"No, I have to do something first." My stomach flips just thinking about telling him I'm pregnant and I know that's not news you spring on someone right before they leave to work.

"Okay, okay. I look forward to hearing it tonight then. I love you, I'll call you on my way home." He kisses me and when he pulls away he asks, "When did you brush your teeth?"

I freeze wondering what to say and then lie, "While you were in the shower." He doesn't seem to think much about it and gives me one more kiss before leaving me to get ready. I let out a long sigh and tell myself to try and enjoy the next twelve hours because I might not enjoy what happens after.
