Chapter Twenty-Seven

Ashara wandered around the small village on Sorgan, smiling at the children who were laughing and playing, and taking note of the people who were working in the krill ponds. She spotted Katalina's husband, Benjamin in one of them, with the woman standing nearby, speaking with her husband. As she approached the older woman, she was met with intrigued stares. She had foregone the cloak this time, as well as her lightsabers, they were still in the guest room of Katalina's hut.

Katalina grinned when she saw her younger friend. "You're awake!" Ashara nodded with a smile.

"I am, and I did say I'd tell you about my adventures after I left Tatooine in the morning, so when you're free, I'm ready to share."

Katalina's eyes grew wider if it were possible, and she said a quick goodbye to Benjamin before running forward and grabbing Ashara's arm, dragging her along. The togruta smiled, amused at her friend's enthusiasm. Katalina brought her to the center of the small village, where remnants of the previous nights fire were. The human female sat down on a log, and Ashara followed her.

Ashara was quiet as she thought of where to start, and she decided to start with the day she found out she was force sensitive. Katalina listened intently as the togruta spoke of how Qui-gon Jinn found her, and freed her and Anakin. She spoke of Qui-gon's death, and how she almost wasn't able to begin training, but how Shaak Ti decided that she was able to be trained. She spoke of her training, and her passing the trials that allowed her to be a Jedi Knight. Ashara thought of telling Katalina about her feelings for Rex, but she decided against it. That would be a story for another time, if she ever got the chance. She continued telling her friend about her involvement in the war, as well as her squad and their deaths. She could sense Katalina's sadness, but she ignored it, in favor of continuing onto how she finally couldn't handle it anymore and left.

Katalina stared at Ashara, her eyes wide with astonishment. "I knew you and little Ani were different, but I didn't know that you were that different."

Ashara chuckled. "Yeah. It came as a surprise to both of us honestly. I'm glad I got to experience being a Jedi."

"Me too", Ashara said. "I plan on eventually going back, but right now, I'm just been going where the force has been telling me to go, and this was one of the planets. I'm guessing it was so I could be reunited with you. Besides Shmi, you were the only other female that I considered to be a mother like figure."

Katalina smiled. "I'm glad I could take that role for you. I know that you struggled with missing your birth mother as a kid."

Ashara hummed. "I still miss her, but not as much as I used to. Sometimes I wonder how she's doing, but other times I completely forget she existed. Shmi became my mother, and I miss her more than anyone. Well... except for Rex."

"Rex?" Katalina asked, and the togruta's face became more orange than yellow as blood rushed to her face. She realized that she spoke without thinking and admitted to the main conflict of her feelings.

"Uh, yeah..."

"Who's this Rex you speak of?" Katalina teased, seeing that Ashara seemed to be embarrassed about him.

"He's a friend", Ashara mumbled. "Kind of. We've... kind of got a sort of romance thing going on, I think. He tried to kiss me once, but then he didn't, and it caused a lot of confusion and pain between us. A few months ago, though, he said something that sounded like he never liked me in the first place."

Katalina frowned, squeezing her friend's shoulders in a side hug. "I'm sorry. Your life sounds complicated."

Ashara sighed. "Being a Jedi is always complicated. I'm not supposed to form attachments. But I get attached to so many people. It's hard not forming attachments especially when I'm supposed to be caring. That's what a Jedi is. We care and help everyone, but we can't form attachments."

Her friend wrapped an arm around her. "I'm sorry that you're struggling with this."

The togruta shrugged. "It's just part of my life. I think everyone has struggles, and it's just a matter of time before they break down from them. It's a wonder so many of the Jedi don't leave the order, because of how strict it is."

"Do you wish you could leave the order?"

Ashara was silent for a long time, pondering the question. It rolled around in her head, and she could feel two sides pulling her towards it.

"I... I don't know. I think I would, but only if Anakin left with me. He's my brother, and I can't leave him alone there. He struggles constantly, and I know he shares my conflicted feelings. It's why we're so close."

Katalina was quiet. "Have you talked to him about that? About leaving the order?"

Ashara shook her head. "No. Not yet. We're needed in this war effort. Or at least, Anakin is. He's one of the strongest Jedi, and honestly, at this point, I'm not entirely sure the council would let him leave. He is the chosen one after all."

"Chosen one?"

"Yeah. There's this old prophecy, that speaks of someone who will bring balance to the force. Anakin's the most powerful Jedi out there, so many people think he is the chosen one. I think he is too, but I'm worried about what that means for his future..."

"Why do you say that?"

Ashara opened her mouth to reply, but she was cut off by an overwhelming feeling that she was needed somewhere else. It left her in a stupor for a few minutes, before she stood abruptly.

"I need to go", she announced. "Something is calling to be, and it's powerful."

Katalina stood as well, eyes furrowed in worry. "Will you be okay?"

Ashara smiled. "I'm a Jedi who fights alongside the best Jedi we have. I think I'll be fine."

Katalina chuckled, and walked with Ashara back to the hut she had stayed in the previous night. The duo walked in and the human female watched as Ashara grabbed her two lightsabers off of her cloak and connected them to her belt.

"You're a dual-wielder?" she asked. Ashara smiled.

"Yeah. It makes it easier to fight, or even defend. I have my own style that works better than most. It's unconventional in the eyes of the other Jedi, but it works for me."

Katalina chuckled. "That sounds about right. You always did things differently than everyone else on Tatooine as well."

Ashara's smile widened into a grin. She didn't reply though as she grabbed her cloak and draped it around her shoulders. She walked out of the hut, her friend following close behind her.

"Do you want an escort back to your ship?" The togruta shook her head.

"I'll be okay."

With that, she started walking through the forest, back to the Ghost, leaving her friend behind.
