Chapter Thirty-Five
"So you're telling me that after Anakin and I left, the Jedi general put in charge was a traitor?" Ashara asked Rex as they walked through the hallways.
Rex nodded. "He was a terrible leader, and had no respect for us clones."
"I wish I could have a chance to yell at him then", Ashara joked. "It's a good thing he's dead though. We don't need him killing off all you clones. Too many people do care about you all, me being one of them."
Anakin and Ahsoka happened to be passing by at that moment, and Anakin added a comment. "We all know which one you care about most." Ashara blushed and yelled after him.
"Shut up, Bananakin!" Ahsoka snorted at Ashara's nickname, whereas Rex chuckled. Ashara could feel Anakin's annoyance, and grinned mischievously.
"Run", she whispered to Rex, grabbing his hand and pulling him along. They ran through the halls, ending up at her quarters once more, where most of her story telling had taken place.
"So why where we running?" Rex asked. Ashara grinned.
"He hates it when I call him Bananakin." Rex shook his head in amusement, before tilting his head.
"Are we back in here because you're going to tell more of your story?" Ashara nodded. He grinned and instantly made his way to his spot on her bed. She sat down next to him, their legs brushing against one another. Neither one moved away, knowing that it was comforting to know that the other one was there. Ashara smiled at Rex, who smiled back. She looked away as she continued her story.
Ashara stood in front of the Jedi Council back on Coruscant, nervous as to why they had requested to see her. Anakin had become Obi-Wan's apprentice, and she had none currently. She doubted she would be able to train in the ways of the force alongside Anakin and that scared her immensely.
Master Yoda, as she had learned his name was, spoke. "Agreed to become your master, a Jedi has."
Ashara couldn't keep the surprise off her face. She really thought they would send her back to Tatooine to be with Shmi, or maybe ship her off to some other planet, maybe her home planet of Kiros. But nope, she was going to be trained.
"Who is my master?" she asked quietly, almost afraid that if she spoke too loud, they would change their mind.
"Shaak Ti has agreed to train you", Master Windu said. Ashara heard someone stand up behind her, and she was greeted by a red skinned togruta with white markings, and white and blue lekku and montrals. She gave a nervous smile toward her new master, who gave a gentle and reassuring one to the young togruta.
"Come, little one", Shaak Ti said. "There is much for you to learn."
Ashara followed her outside the council chambers, excited to get to know her new master. She couldn't wait to tell Anakin as well. And while there was still a lot she was afraid of, she knew that she would soon become less afraid the more she learned the ways of the force.
"Obviously, I trained hard and finally became a Jedi Knight", she concluded. "Or else I wouldn't be here today."
Rex chuckled. "How did you become a Jedi Knight."
"A lot of that was due to Anakin's stupidity, to be honest", she muttered. "I was at the first battle of Geonosis. I arrived alongside my master, and I got separated from her. At the end of the day, I was still standing, and it was after that that I was granted Knighthood."
"Gee, thanks for calling me stupid", Anakin said, rolling his eyes from the door way. "I've been wondering where you get off to every day, Rex. I should've known it was with Ash."
Rex's cheeks flushed and he rubbed the back of his neck. "Yes, well, she's very nice to talk to."
"Oh there's more to it than that and you know it", Anakin pressed.
"Anakin, that's enough", Ashara said. "We are comfortable how we are right now, and we don't need another one of your plans to ruin that."
Anakin shrugged. "We've got a new mission. The separatists have invaded the planet Kiros, and we're planning on helping the colonists there."
Ashara froze. "Kiros?" she asked. "You mean, my home planet Kiros?"
Realization dawned on Anakin's face. "Yes, that one. Will you be okay?"
Ashara took a deep breath. "I should be. While it is possible I will run into my parents there, there are a lot of colonists, and I look much different from when I was four."
Rex was silent as he processed what was happening. Anakin left them alone, and Ashara sat quietly.
"Ashara?" he said, the name slipping freely off his tongue now. "Are you all right?"
Ashara didn't reply. "I just... I didn't expect that I would ever be able to go back to my home planet. I don't even remember it. I just know that that was where I was born. It's something I've never forgotten."
Rex nodded, not really understanding, but knowing that he needed- and wanted- to be there for his friend. For the love of his life, even if she didn't know. In that instant, he decided to do something rash.
He kissed her on the cheek.
It stunned her, and he leaped up from where he sat on the bed. "I'm going to go get ready for the mission", he said, not giving her a chance to react before he left the room. She sat there for a while, her eyes wide. Her hand moved of it's own accord, and brushed the spot his lips had touched. She let out a surprised exhale, not believing where this had gotten to.
Maybe... just maybe... he felt the same way about her as she felt about him.
