Chapter Sixty-Four

Ashara stood next to Anakin as they discuss the battlefronts on Anaxes with Master Windu, Obi-Wan, and Teriko. There was a chance they could change the entire course of the campaign on Anaxes, but it was a very small chance.

"I think I could improve your chances", a confident voice stated. Ashara looked over to see Echo.

"Excuse me for a moment, Generals", Rex said as he hurried over to Echo. As they talked quietly, Ashara could feel Teriko's glare. She swiveled her gaze around to meet his, and she was saddened to see that the gold rim was still there. Being under Obi-Wan's supervision didn't seem to be helping any.

"If the trooper has a plan, I'd like to hear it", Windu said, having overheard Rex's conversation with Echo. Ashara turned to look back over at the duo.

"May I?" Echo asked Rex for permission who begrudgingly let him go. He scomped in and began to explain his plan.

"While Master Windu leads a team to retake the assembly complex, the Bad Batch will escort me into Trench's new comm vault, which according to current intel, is now located on this Separatist dreadnaught above Anaxes", Echo explained. "Once I'm plugged in, I can feed Trench strategies, but this time, you'll know every move before he makes it."

"And you are certain that if we get you onboard that ship, that you can convince Trench's army to do what you want?" Master Windu says.

"Absolutely", Echo stated. "Unfortunately, I've been doing this for a while, but this time, I can help bring about a Republic victory instead of a defeat."

Master Windu nodded, accepting the plan. Anakin and Rex went with the Bad Batch, while Ashara stayed with Windu. She was going to help with the attack on the assembly complex.

The Jedi leapt out of their gunships, and landed safely in the assembly complex. Ashara landed next to Master Windu, while Obi-Wan and Teriko landed nearby. All of their lightsabers were drawn, ready to attack

"My name is General Mace Windu of the Jedi Order", Master Windu said, confusing the other three Jed in the room. "At this point of the clone war, I have dismantled and destroyed over one hundred thousand of you type one battle droids. I am giving you the opportunity to peacefully lay down your weapons so that you may be reprogrammed to serve a better purpose than spreading the mindless violence and chaos, which you have inflicted upon the galaxy."

Ashara had to fight back her amusement. He was probably confusing the droids, just as much as he was confusing Obi-Wan. The confusion didn't last long, as one of the droids shouted "blast them."

The droids immediately began to rain fire upon them, and Ashara was quick to leap into the fray. Teriko did the same and together they fought together. Even if they didn't agree with each other  at the moment, they still served the same purpose and would work together to go through with this.

A voice came over all of their comm-links. "Master Windu, I know it's going to sound crazy, but it's about to get a little more crowded where you are", Anakin said. Ashara groaned, but kept fighting. She was trusting that Echo knew what she was doing.

"We have our hands full as it is", Windu said. "What is you plan?"

Ashara listened as she fought, though it was hard to hear over the sound of blaster fire. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to jump directly into the fray, as she was surrounded on all sides by droids. She found herself backing up, and soon found herself back to back with her old padawan.

"Just like old times, eh, Teriko?" she joked, though she wasn't sure he would find it entirely funny.

"Sure", he replied sharply. She sighed, but kept her mind focused on the mission. Together they took down many droids, and soon, the droids were all gone. Ashara knew that it wouldn't be long until the rest of the droids showed, and they would be entirely overwhelmed again.

"Well, there weren't as many I thought there were going to be", Obi-Wan said when they regrouped. Of course, after he said, three different doors opened and thousands of droids poured in, surrounding them.

"Does this meet your expectations?" Windu asked sarcastically. Obi-Wan glanced at him.

"This exceeds my expectations."

Ashara got in a defensive position, but it wasn't needed as the droids were all hit with an electrical shock and they all fell to the ground, disabled. Windu reported to Anakin what had happened, and Ashara could hear the pride in her brother's voice as he replied.

As Obi-Wan and Windu ordered the troops to sweep the complex for any straggling droids, Ashara started to get a bad feeling in her gut. Tech came over the comm.

"General Windu, we've discovered a bomb in the fusion reactor", the clone said. "We need someone to go down there, and help disarm it."

"I'm on my way", Windu said. Ashara's gut feeling grew worse, and she worried for her newfound friends. She knew the Batch could take care of themselves, but she worried that they would lose someone.

"Get the men out of here", the Jedi Master ordered just before he disappeared down the lift.

"You heard the general. Organize your platoons and get the men out of here!" Obi-Wan ordered the clones standing nearby.

"Sir, yes, sir", Jesse replied and ran off.

Ashara, Obi-Wan and Teriko hurried outside and waited for the last few clones to get onto the gunships. Obi-Wan took that opportunity to talk to Windu.

"Mace, if you can't stop the detonation, you must leave now!" he said urgently.

"That is not an option", Windu said sternly. "I still have a chance to stop this, even if it's down to my best guess."

Anakin's voice came over the comm, and Ashara was never so relieved to hear his voice. "How about I take the guesswork out of it, Master? Admiral Trench was kind enough to give me the final number himself. Try seven."

"Good work, Skywalker", Windu said after a brief pause. "The bomb has been disarmed."

Relief flowed through Ashara, and she could sense relief coming from Obi-Wan as well. She couldn't sense anything from Teriko though, and that scared her.

"You both owe me one now", Anakin said. Ashara couldn't tell if he was joking or not. Windu met up with them, and they headed back to their home base on Anaxes. Anakin, the Bad Batch, Echo, and Rex met them there, where Windu thanked them for their service.

"Captain Rex, Corporal Echo, and Clone Force 99, you have all done a great service for the Republic. Thanks to your courage and effort, Republic shipyards will soon be up and running again", he said, before turning and walking away.

"You've got some medals coming your way", Obi-Wan added before following after Windu. Anakin didn't say anything as he left, and Ashara knew she was supposed to follow Anakin but she stayed. She knew the Bad Batch was going to leave soon, and she wanted to say goodbye.

Rex starts to walk away, and Echo begins to follow them, but he hesitates and turns back to the Batch.

"You coming?" he asked the Batch.

"Not really our thing", Tech explained.

"Accolades", Crosshair added to Tech's explanation.

"Yeah, we're just in it for the thrill", Wrecker exclaimed.

"You sure it's your thing?" Hunter asked. Ashara knew what was coming, and she could already see Echo's answer. She felt sorry for Rex, but she knew that he would see Echo again, someday in the future.

"What do you mean?" Echo asked, unsure of what Hunter was implying.

"Your path is different", Hunter explained. "Like ours." Echo looks down, thinking about it, and Hunter continues. "If you ever feel like you don't fit in with them, well, find us."

He nodded to the Batch to start heading to ship, and they started to do so, but Ashara called out to them.

"You just gonna leave without saying goodbye?" she said jokingly.

Tech turned to her. "It is very unlikely that it is goodbye, General. I am sure our paths will cross again."

Ashara chuckled. "Well, then I guess I will see you around, Tech."

He smiled, and walked onto the ship. Crosshair merely nodded at her, to which she smiled. She swear she saw a faint smile cross his lips as he turned away, but it might have just been her imagination. Wrecker came up to her and pulled her into a giant hug.

"I'll miss you, General!" he said, almost crying. Ashara hugged him back the best she could, but it was hard when her arms were trapped against her sides.

"Wrecker, put the General down", Hunter said, before walking in front of Ashara. He stuck his hand out for her to take, which she did.

"It was good to work with you, General", he said. "Find us, if you ever think you need us."

Ashara nodded, and he walked away toward the ship. Rex came back up to Echo and Ashara, and spoke.

"Those are some of the finest troopers I have ever fought alongside", he told Echo, who didn't seem to be listening. Rex placed a hand on his friends shoulder. "Echo. You and I go way back. If that's where you feel your place is, then that's where you belong."

Rex turned and walked away, stopping a few feet away from his lover. She smiled at Echo, and gave him a gentle nudge.

"Go with them, Echo. They're your family now", she said softly. "Just remember that you still have family here too."

Echo nodded, and hurried over to Batch, while Ashara walked over to Rex. She turned to look at Echo, and he saluted, with the rest of the Batch following his lead. Ashara smiled, and nodded gratefully at them. She and Rex watched as they boarded their ship, and flew away.

Echo was alive and well, and he was with family.
