Chapter Seventeen
Ashara stood behind Anakin and Rex, next to Master Adi Gallia. They were going to go rescue a member of the Jedi Council, Master Eeth Koth, from General Grievous. Her squad was with her, ready and excited to be part of this mission. They hadn't been on many since Tha died, and she knew that they had been itching to get back onto the field.
"Are you ready?" a holographic image of Obi-wan spoke.
"Ready and waiting", Anakin replied from the pilot's seat.
"I shall engage the separatist fleet and send you the coordinates of Grievous' command ship", the Jedi Master told the two knights.
"Just make sure you get it right", Anakin told his old master. Ashara snorted at his tone of voice.
"The way you're talking, Anakin, makes it sound like you were the master instead of Obi-wan", she said. Rex chuckled quietly, and Ashara has to fight against wanting to glance at him and smile. She had to pretend like everything was okay, and she figured that the best way to do that was to separate herself and Rex. Even if it tore at every fiber of her being to do so.
"How do you plan on getting Grievous aboard your ship?" Master Gallia asked. Ashara squashed down everything she was feeling, knowing that the master could likely sense it and was wondering why the young knight was hurting so much.
"Not to worry", Obi-wan said. "The good general and I have a history. I'm sure he'll want to even the score face-to-face."
"Meanwhile, we'll jump in undetected and board the command ship", Anakin said.
"If Master Koth is still alive, we will find him", Master Gallia said. Ashara nodded in agreement.
"Hopefully by the end of this mission, we will have saved Master Koth and captured Grievous", Obi-wan said, but Ashara knew he wasn't optimistic. She wasn't either. Grievous was a tricky one to capture. The holographic image disappeared, and the togruta watched as the rest of the fleet jumped to hyperspace, leaving them behind. Until they got the go from Obi-wan, they would be waiting.
While they waited, it was deathly quiet. Ashara could barely hear the others breathing, and she let out a silent sigh. She risked a glance over at Rex, only to find him looking at her. She quickly turned her head away, ignoring the flash of sadness that went through her system. She hoped that Obi-wan would contact them soon.
Rex looked away at the same time Ashara did. He wanted to tear himself apart for his mistake. If he just hadn't lost control of himself when he saw that she was awake after being in a coma for seven months, then everything would be normal. There wouldn't be this weird tension between them. His mistake had cost him a friend.
He knew that that if he mentioned having lost her as friend to Ashara, she would deny it. But he knew that he had messed up; she'd been avoiding him ever since. She wouldn't even look at him anymore. She was giving him the cold shoulder, and he deserved it.
Rex continually beat himself up, not noticing the worried glances he was getting from Anakin. He only managed to pull himself out of his thoughts when the computer in front of him beeped.
"We are receiving the coordinates from General Kenobi", he informed the generals. He could feel Ashara's gaze on him for a brief moment before it disappeared.
"How close are you going to jump in next to Grievous' ship?" Gallia asked. Ashara chuckled softly as Anakin answered.
"Pretty close" the Jedi Knight said confidently. "Buckle up boys."
"And girls", Ashara added.
"Define 'pretty close'", Master Gallia said.
"Close enough to get the job done", Anakin said, not really elaborating. Ashara knew he wouldn't. She watched as they jumped into hyperspace. It went quiet again as they waited for the jump out of hyperspace. The togruta was grateful when Anakin spoke.
"Coming out of hyperspace", he said. "Hang on." She braced herself, knowing that it would be an interesting ride with Anakin flying. It was always was either he or his padawan flew. She chuckled as they landed on the bottom of Grievous' command ships.
"So, was that close enough for you?" Anakin asked Master Gallia, a smirk on his face.
"Any closer, and we'd be flying down hallways", she said, amused. Anakin shrugged.
"Eh. Maybe next time", the Jedi Knight said. Ashara snorted.
"If there is a next time", she muttered. "You have so many crazy stunts that it's a wonder you're still alive."
Anakin rolled his eyes and got up, walking to the hatch on the ceiling. He climbed up, and into Grievous's ship. Master Gallia followed him, and Ashara followed her.
As soon as she popped out of the little hole, almost like a daisy popping out of snow, Anakin spoke quietly. "Coast is clear, Rex."
Ashara glanced at the hole to see that Rex was climbing out, a few clones following suit. Her squad followed after them. Anakin looked at the clone captain.
"Stay here, and guard the entrance", he ordered them. Ashara looked at her squad.
"Tchachke and Meeva, stay here", she ordered. "Halene and Dice, follow me."
The group of four women nodded, two splitting off from the others as they followed Ashara. She followed Anakin and Master Gallia toward the bridge of the ship, dodging past droids so they wouldn't notice the small group trying to rescue Master Koth.
"How we doing?" Anakin asked after they had turned down several hallways.
"We are close", Master Gallia answered quietly, just as they reached a small group of three B1 class droids. Without hesitation, Ashara darted forward, and she quickly took out two of the droids, leaving the third standing in front of her. Without hesitation, she used the force to crush it, using her frustration about Rex to use that ability.
She could feel the concern wafting off of Anakin, but she ignored it, and instead continued onward toward the bridge. She heard the others following her, but she didn't slow down. She caught sight of a super battle droid, and darted forward once more, slicing it in half, and sending it flying through the door to the bridge. It landed by a tactical droids feet, who was standing next to incapacitated Eeth Koth.
"Surprise", Anakin smirked. Ashara frowned, sensing that there was a danger hidden in the room. She was proved correct when several skilled commando droids popped up all over the room, half with swords, the other half with blasters.
Ashara pulled out her dual lightsabers, and stood defensively as she gazed at the commando droids. She was ready to fight them, but she couldn't leave the others to fight by themselves. She would die protecting them if she had to.
"Well, at least they're not destroyer droids", Anakin said. Ashara rolled her eyes.
"Oh yeah, these are much better, Anakin", she said sarcastically. He didn't reply, but she suspected that was because the tactical droid was speaking.
"The general's description of your tactics have been 100% accurate today", the droid said. "Very impressive, even by my standards."
Ashara rolled her eyes, and went to use the force to pull the droid forward, but it pressed a button on its mechanical wrist, causing Master Koth to be shocked with electricity. She took a step forward, but it pressed the button again.
"One more step from any of you, and your friend will die", it said. Ashara frowned, before a smirk crossed her face.
"Hey, Anakin?" she asked slyly. "Did the droid mention anything about it stepping forward?"
"No?" Anakin replied, sounding very confused. Ashara chuckled, and went back to her original plan, pulling the droid forward, and slicing its arm off with a light blue blade. She then sliced off its head, and kicked it away. At that moment, the commando droids started attacking. She ignored them, letting her allies attack them, while she went for Master Koth. The sooner they got him out of there, the sooner they could get off this blasted ship.
She sliced through the power source, and he fell to the ground. She quickly hooked her lightsabers back on her belt, and helped Master Koth up. As she turned toward the door, she noticed Halene aiming a blaster at the two of them. She frowned as she stared at the trooper.
"Halene, what are you doing?" she asked quietly.
"Good soldiers... follow... orders", Halene said softly, and Ashara saw her finger start to squeeze the trigger. Ashara acted quickly, letting Master Koth fall to the ground so he wouldn't get shot, but it wouldn't have mattered either way. Ashara watched as Dice leaped in front of the single flash of blaster fire and fell to the ground. Halene completely ignored her sister, and aimed her blaster at the togruta.
Ashara drew her lightsabers, blocking more blaster fire from Halene. However, as she danced around the blaster fire, Anakin finally noticed and darted toward the rogue clone, cutting through the blaster. Halene dropped it, and started to hold up her fists, ready to fight hand to hand. Before she got the chance, however, Ashara heard a single fire from a blaster sound, and Halene dropped to the ground, smoke and blood oozing from her back.
Ashara's eyes widened when she saw Dice standing, trembling in every limb, holding a blaster. Tears filled Dice's eyes, and she collapsed to the ground. Ashara instantly rushed to her side, and held her close as the clone cried.
"Dice!" Ashara called. "Dice, hold on. You'll be okay!"
Dice shook her head. "Let me go, General. Let me be with my sisters."
Ashara squeezed her eyes shut, but gently laid Dice down as the clone released her final breath. A few tears leaked from Ashara's eyes, but she quickly wiped them away and stood.
"Let's get out of here", she said, noticing Master Gallia holding up Master Koth. The three Jedi she was with nodded, and they hurried as fast they could with an injured Jedi toward their entry point.
As they walked, Obi-wan's voice came over Anakin's comm. "Anakin! I hope you've rescued Master Koth, because Grievous is headed back to his ship!"
Ashara grabbed her lightsabers off her belt, looking to her fellow Jedi. Master Koth spoke.
"You both go. I'll make it back. I'll be fine."
"We'll have to disagree with you on that one. Master Gallia, Ashara, you go ahead. I'll get Eeth back to the shuttle", Anakin replied. Ashara nodded, and she and the tholathian hurried ahead, in an attempt to stop Grievous from getting back to his ship.
As the two Jedi ran toward the docking bay, Ashara heard the sounds of grunting. She shared a glance with Master Gallia, and they hurried toward the sound, and found Grievous about to close the door.
"Until we meet again, Kenobi", Grievous cackled, not noticing the Jedi until they ignited their lightsabers.
"Ah, we meet again, Jedi", Grievous chuckled. "Are you here for another dance."
"Not today, General", Ashara glared. "I brought you a new dance partner."
At those words, Master Gallia jumped forward, but Grievous instantly blocked her lightsabers with his own. However, the fight didn't last long due to the docking tube cracking even more, and Ashara found herself being pulled forward. She grunted, and grabbed hold of the wall, holding on for dear life.
She let a relieved breath when Master Gallia closed the hatch as soon as Obi-wan and a couple of his clones made it safely on board.
"Come on, hurry!" Obi-wan yelled. "We can still catch him."
"Obi-wan", Master Gallia said, catching the other master's attention. "Anakin's leaving. We'll be trapped on board this ship."
Obi-wan sighed as he turned to face the tholathian. "Anakin, come in", he said into his comm-link. "We're in a bit of spot and we need a way off of Grievous' ship."
"There's a large hangar near your position", Anakin's voice came through the comm-link. "Make your way there, and I'll pick you up."
"Thanks, Anakin", Ashara called before they started running to the hangar. She ran just behind the two master's, and the rest of the clone's followed closely behind her. They soon reached the hangar, and a few seconds later, Anakin arrived to pick them. She darted on board after Obi-wan, and held steady as the ship lurched forward.
The mission was finally over, and she grieve for her two lost clones. But first she had to find the rest of her squad and share with them the news. It was not something she wanted to do.
