Chapter Nine
Ashara walked into the command center, where Ahsoka and Rex were staring at the screen, worry evident on Ahsoka's face. She could feel Rex's worry through the force, and that got her concerned. Rex was rarely worried. A loud beeping came from the screen.
"What's going on?" she asked, immediately taking charge.
"Master Skywalker turned on his tracking beacon", Ahsoka said, looking over at the older Jedi. Ashara frowned.
"Rex, gather as many men as you can", she ordered. "We're going to find him."
"Right away, sir", he answered as he turned away to do as she said. Ashara looked back at the screen, and frowned.
"What's Anakin doing?" she asked quietly. "Is he trying to get himself killed?" She turned to the padawan that stood next to her. "Ahsoka, go with Rex to save your master. I'm going to talk to Obi-wan."
Ahsoka nodded, and darted away. Ashara turned to holotable, and pressed a button to contact Obi-wan. When he appeared, she noted the look of confusion on his face.
"Ashara?" he asked. "What's going on?"
"Well, for one, Anakin seems to have a death sentence", she said, crossing her arms. "He went out alone to look for the listening post, and a few minutes later, his tracking beacon came on. Ahsoka's on her way right now to make sure that he's okay, but if he's not, it's his own fault."
Obi-wan sighed. "He's probably just grieving the loss of R2. It's very unlikely that he survived, and Anakin never takes losing something he cared about well."
"You think I don't know that?" Ashara snapped. "I grew up with him; I know exactly what he's like."
The Jedi master sighed. "I'll talk to him, but I doubt he'll listen. He never does."
The togruta sighed. "I know. He's an idiot like that."
Obi-wan nodded, before his holographic image disappeared. Ashara heard a beep signaling an incoming call, and she answered it. Rex appeared, giving her a nod.
"We've got the general, sir", he said. The Jedi gave him a grateful smile.
"Thank you, captain", she said. "Let me know when you guys get back to the fleet."
"As you wish", he said before his form fizzled out. Ashara's heart fluttered at the three words, but she couldn't understand why.
~~~~~~
A familiar clone ran up to Ashara, who was standing at the window. She turned to her, and gave her a questioning look. "What is it, Tchachke?"
"You have an incoming transmission from Captain Rex, sir."
Ashara instantly made her way past the female clone, and went to the holotable. She was greeted by a familiar clone, as well as a familiar padawan.
"What is it?" she asked immediately.
"We've found out where R2 is", Ahsoka said. "Master Skywalker believes he's at the separatists listening post."
Ashara sighed. "Send me the coordinates, the Valkyrie and I will meet you there."
Ahsoka nodded, and the transmission ended. She turned to Tchachke. "Have your sisters meet me down in the hangar. We're going to go help Anakin."
Tchachke nodded, and Ashara hurried down to the hangar to prep the Ghost. As she got the ship started up, she noticed her squad entering the hangar. She left the pilot's seat to go meet them at the hatch. What surprised her was that her silver droid, R3, was with them. She smiled. "Valkyrie Squad, I'd like for you to meet the Ghost. I didn't properly introduce you to her when I met you guys on Kamino. She's one of the best ships around."
Ashara walked over to the ramp that led up into the ship, and led her squad into the ship. She instantly went for the cockpit, and she quickly got the ship up and running. With little effort, she got the ship out into space.
"R3, you got those coordinates, right?" she asked. The astromech beeped in confirmation. "Good. Set the navicomputer, and let's get going."
As soon as R3 gave her the green light to jump into hyperspace, she pulled a lever and watched as a blue light shined through the viewport, allowing them to travel more efficiently through space.
When they came out of hyperspace, she could see the Twilight waiting for them by a gaseous moon. She saw them maneuvering to connect airlocks with her ship, so she just held the ship steady while they connected. Once they were connected, she left her seat and started walking over to the Twilight. Her squad followed. As she got in, she found Anakin waiting for her.
"Have you found anything else about R2?" she asked. Anakin shook his head.
"No, but we did find the listening post. I believe R2 is inside", he said. Ashara nodded.
"Okay. Have one of your men take over my ship, I don't want to leave her out in space defenseless."
Anakin nodded, and sent one of his men over to the Ghost. They detached the ships as they walked to cockpit at the front of the Twilight. Once they entered, Ahsoka spoke up from where she was by the communications array.
"I'm picking up a lot of encrypted chatter", she said. Anakin looked at her, and spoke sharply.
"Contact Obi-wan", he said. "Stubby, scramble secret code set 1477. I don't want that station to pick this up." Ahsoka nodded and got the Jedi Master on the holo-comm.
"Anakin?" Obi-wan said as he appeared, putting his hands on his hips. Ashara bit back a chuckle at how serious he looked.
"Master, I believe we've found your Separatist listening post", he said.
"Excellent work", the Jedi Master said. "Back off and wait. I'll send two mainline cruisers to help you destroy it."
Ashara watched as Ahsoka walked over to stand by her master. "But R2", the young togruta said quietly as she looked up at her Master.
Anakin glanced down at her before returning his gaze to Obi-wan. "We believe my droid, R2, is on board. He's the one that led us here."
"Hmm, this complicates things", Obi-wan hummed. "You must sneak aboard that station and destroy it before they crack R2's memory banks."
Ashara stepped up. "They have me and my squad to help them with that."
Obi-wan looked at her, before running his gaze over the three of them. "The three of you must get this done." He turned to Anakin. "I know you're fond of that droid, but he's fallen into enemy hands."
"I could rescue R2", Anakin suggested. Obi-wan sighed.
"No. This is not a rescue mission", he said. Ashara shot Obi-want a look, that he either didn't see or ignored. She knew Anakin would disregard Obi-wan's words, and rescue R2 anyway. Obi-wan's holographic image disappeared, and Anakin turned to a clone sitting in the pilot's seat.
"Keep jamming their scanners", he ordered. "If they spot us, we're dead."
Ashara watched as they flew toward the moon, before she turned away and went over to her squad, who were waiting in the corner.
"You guys ready for your first ever stealth mission?" she asked with a half smile. They all nodded.
"We got this!" Tchachke exclaimed. Ashara nodded.
"Yeah, you do", she said. "There's a reason why you're the Valkyrie squad. You're strong female warriors, who don't need men to show you how to get things done."
Her squad cheered, and she grinned, before leaving them and going down to the small cargo bay, where she saw Anakin's ship. She shook her head, amused that he kept breaking it. She saw Ahsoka cleaning up the gold droid that was currently replacing R2. She slid down the ladder, and noticed that her squad had followed her. She smiled, glad she didn't need to give them orders for every little thing she needed them to do.
She approached Ahsoka and Rex. "-access the station's computer for us." Ahsoka was speaking as she stood. She leaned on the gold droid, before she smirked at Rex.
"Oh, and Rex? You get to carry him." Ahsoka walked away, and Ashara snickered at Rex's look of disbelief. She walked over to him, and nudged him slightly.
"Ah, you'll be fine, Captain. Carrying a droid isn't that bad."
"Have you carried one before, sir?" Ashara snorted.
"Nope!" she grinned at him, before walking away and joining Ahsoka. The togruta was chuckling slightly.
"You just love torturing the poor Captain, don't you?" Ashara asked as she reached the padawan. Ahsoka grinned at her.
"His face just kind of asks for it, don't you think?" Ashara laughed loudly.
"Yeah, it kind of does", she said as her laughter calmed. "That's why I had to go and mess with him a little bit too."
Ahsoka laughed, before standing up and getting ready to jump out of the ship and onto the listening post. Ashara followed her, chuckling to herself when she saw Rex carrying the gold droid. She stood outside the ship as they got ready to fly over the listening post. Before Anakin could do or say anything, Ahsoka darted forward.
"Follow me, boys!" she yelled. Ashara laughed as the clones and Anakin started after her slowly before jumping off the edge, Rex slower than most of them.
"Let's go, Valkyrie!" she yelled as she ran over the edge, and starting free-falling through the air. She grimaced as her lekkus started flying backward, almost painfully. She was grateful when she landed in a crouch, and her lekkus fell back to their natural position. Her squad landed gracefully nearby.
Anakin had started cutting a hole into the listening post, allowing them access. She let Anakin's squad jump down first before she followed. Once inside, Ashara watched as Rex set down the gold droid. She heard her squad following behind her, and they continued forward, sneaking around a corner, faintly overhearing two droids talking.
She watched as a clone grabbed the first droids head, yanking it off with ease. Rex quickly shot the second droid, and they continued onward. They reached a port that Stubby could plug into.
"Alright, Stubby, get to work", Anakin barked. She could tell he didn't care for the droid. Stubby displayed the listening post, and Rex started pointing out where they were and where they needed to get to.
"Ahsoka, Ashara, take the squads, and blow up the reactor", Anakin said as he handed of his backpack of explosives to his padawan. "Gravity will do the rest. We'll meet in the landing bay."
"Where are you going?" Ahsoka asked. Ashara rolled her eyes at Anakin, already knowing what he was going to say.
"I'm... just gonna have a little look around", he lied as Ahsoka pulled on the backpack.
"I hope you find R2 in one piece", Ashoka said, seeing right through his lie. Ashara chuckled as Anakin sent her a look. He split off from them, and Ashara instantly took charge, leading them through the hallways to the reactor. She could feel Rex following her close behind, and she smiled slightly.
"Master Ki!" Ahsoka called. "Where's Goldie?"
Ashara paused, and noticed that the droid was nowhere to be found. She sighed. "Go find that Stubby little droid. Meet us at the reactor room." Ahsoka nodded, and darted off while the rest of them continued onward. Ashara was starting to see why Anakin didn't like the little droid.
The alarm started going off, and Ashara groaned. "So much for stealth." They reached the reactor room, and the Jedi Knight sighed when she noticed that there was a ray shielded security door blocking their entrance. She contacted Anakin just as Ahsoka caught up to them.
"We're at the reactor room, Anakin, but the alarm activated a ray shielded security door", she explained.
"This could take a while to bypass", Ahsoka added.
"Good luck with that", Anakin's voice crackled through the comm. Ashara rolled her eyes at his tone before looking to Stubby.
"Alright, you're up Stubby", she said to the gold droid.
"Make me proud, Goldie", Ahsoka added as she set her backpack on the ground. The gold droid moved over toward the port.
"Oh, this'll be good", Rex said. Ashara quietly chuckled as Ahsoka sent a glare their way. The droid got to work, but the Jedi Knight was distracted by the sound of marching steps coming towards their position. She instantly grabbed her lightsabers, and got into a battle stance.
"Those droids are getting close, sir", Rex said. "Do you think R3's going to open up that door anytime soon?"
"He's working on it. Patience, Captain", Ahsoka said, getting offended on the droids behalf. Ashara shook her head.
"Don't focus on what Stubby's doing", she ordered. "Get ready to fight some droids." They nodded, and got into a ready position to fight. The droids got into their line of sight, and a clone turned to Ashara.
"I can always hotwire it, sir", he said. Ashara glanced at Ahsoka, but the younger togruta was looking at the gold droid.
"Hurry up, Goldie", she said pleadingly.
"I think we've run out of time", Rex said as the droid's reached them. Ashara faintly heard a droid yelling to his companions to blast them as she darted forward. She was grateful they were merely B1 battle droids, and that they were easier to destroy than the superdroids. She darted forward, and started slicing through the droids, all the while dodging blaster fire from her own team. She knew they weren't trying to hit her and that she was getting in the way of their fight, but she wanted this battle to be over quickly. She heard a hiss from behind her and glanced back to see that a second security door had closed over the ray shielded one. She also spotted a few super droids approaching from the other side. She groaned and went back to fighting the droids. She cut through the last few of them, and turned to see Rex throw a droid popper towards the super droids, taking them out easily.
She relaxed, and put away her lightsabers, before returning to her teammates side. She closed her eyes briefly, only to open them wide when she heard a gravelly voice.
"They sent a child to destroy my station?" Grievous asked as he activated a lightsaber. "The republic must be running out of Jedi." Ashara whipped around to see the cyborg step out of the shadows. She narrowed her eyes, and activated her lightsabers.
"You must be General Grievous", Ahsoka said, getting into a battle stance. He laughed, but the laugh ended in a short cough.
"He's just another tinny, boys", the young togruta said as she activated her lightsaber. Ashara winced, but didn't say anything as she prepared to fight. "Let's scrap him like the rest!"
Ahsoka darted forward, engaging in a duel with him, but was easily thrown back. Ashara stayed with the two squads, protecting them the best she could from Grievous' attacks. He leaped up, knocking the clones against walls. Ashara herself was sent flying down the hallway. When she got up, she saw him approaching Rex, about to cut into him. She used the force to pull Grievous toward her. She saw Ahsoka get up, and she yelled to the younger togruta.
"Get to the reactor room! Now!" she ordered as her lightsabers were met with Grievous' one. Ashara threw his lightsabers away, before slowly leading him away from the reactor room. Once they were far enough away that he would prefer going after her and not finishing the rest of them off, Ashara ran, not noticing that Stubby was following her. She found herself in a storage room of sorts, and quickly hid amongst the shelves, hoping that Grievous wouldn't find her.
"Where did you go, Jedi?" she heard him snarl. She quieted her breathing, before sneaking around a shelf in the hopes that she could escape the room and leave him searching there while she went to go help her teammates. She saw a box she could easily move with the force that would create a loud sound and get him off her trail. She silently moved it, hearing it thud, and hearing Grievous' footsteps fade away.
"Come here, Jedi", she heard the general say. "I'm looking for you." This was one game of hide and seek that Ashara did not want to be playing. She started inching toward the door, only to have a light shine on her.
"Stubby", she hissed, recognizing the droid. "What are you doing?"
A lightsaber ignited behind Stubby, then a second one. Ashara didn't hesitate to activate hers. Grievous leapt towards her, and she blocked his lightsabers with her own. She grunted as the strength at which he pressed down on her own. She sent a kick his way, pushing him back.
"Care to dance, general?" she asked, as she beckoned him forward, a smirk on his face. All she needed to do was distract him long enough so they could get the charges set. He chuckled, coughing at the end.
"I would love to, Jedi", he said, before lunging at her with his lightsabers. She leapt out of the way, and swung her lightsabers at his side. He blocked them with a singular lightsaber and used the other one to try and cut through her legs. She jumped up, pulling her lightsabers away from Grievous' as she twisted her body over his. She landed in a crouch, one hand resting on the floor, the lightsaber in said hand turned off. Her other lightsaber as positioned backwards in her other hand, which was held out behind her. Her wrist comm started beeping, and she heard Ahsoka's voice come through.
"The charges are set, Master Ki. We're on our way to the landing bay."
Ashara smirked, as she leapt up onto a shelf and cut a hole in the ceiling as quickly as possible. Before she disappeared through it, she sent a grin toward Grievous.
"It was a pleasure dancing with you, general."
