Chapter Forty-Two

Ashara glared at the two council member's in front of her. "If we don't tell him soon, he will hunt down Obi-Wan and actually kill him! Do you know what that would do to him?! It would destroy him, and possibly everything he cares about, including the Jedi Order! Who's to say he wouldn't be the one to destroy the Jedi Order! He needs to know!"

Mace Windu shook his head. "He would jeopardize the mission if he were to find out."

"And you think him going after Obi-Wan is better idea than telling him?" Ashara snapped.

"Respect Obi-Wan's wishes we must", Yoda said. Ashara scoffed.

"I know Obi-Wan said not to tell Anakin, but I think this is taking it too far", she said. "Anakin is consumed by his rage and his grief. I know him better than all of you. He lets his emotions run rampant far more often than you know. And right now is one of the times that we need to tell him the truth in order to calm him!"

Yoda pondered this for a moment, but it Mace Windu who spoke. "The council has needs to discuss this before we make any decisions."

Ashara sighed, knowing that that was the best she was going to get. "Just don't take too long to discuss it, or I might end up making the decision for you because I know Anakin won't wait very long to chase after who he thinks killed his old master. He has always been one for revenge, and I'm not sure I'll be able to stop him this time without telling him the truth..."

"Thank you for your opinion", Windu pretty much spat as the two walked away. Ashara glared at him. She knew he had hated her and Anakin since the moment they arrived. He had made that very clear over the years, and yet she did not care. Anakin was her brother, plain and simple. There was no separating them at that time. Nowadays, they are more okay with it, because they had grown used to it as they got older, and more adjusted to the Jedi Temple and to Coruscant.

Ashara made her way to the hangar, knowing that as soon as Anakin figured out where the man he thought was Rako Hardeen was going, he would be going there. Unfortunately, she did not have to wait for very long, and both he and Ahsoka came storming up to the hangar door. She was surprised when Teriko was not far behind them.

"Ashara, don't try and stop me", Anakin snarled. Ashara didn't say anything, she just stood in front of the door, preventing Anakin from moving past her.

"Ashara, move", he growled. Ashara shook her head.

"No can do, Ani", the togruta said, using his nickname from Tatooine. It would catch him off guard, since she never really used it since the war started. Anakin didn't say anything, just glared at her.

"If you are truly my sister, you would let me pass", he spat. Ashara tried not to flinch, but the words still stung.

"I'm sorry, Ani", she continued. "But I can't do that. You know it's not what Obi-Wan would have wanted. He wouldn't want you to go after Hardeen."

"That man must pay for what he's done", Anakin snarled. Ashara sighed and took a step forward, forcing Anakin to take a step back. She looked directly into his eyes.

"Perhaps he does. But would you be able to control yourself and not kill him, and instead bring him back to prison?"

Anakin didn't answer, and Ashara grabbed his hand, squeezing it tightly.

"Ani, I know you. I know what happened with our mother", she said softly. "I know how you used revenge as a way to release your pain, and I also know it's made you feel worse about yourself. It is because of that moment that you struggle with being a Jedi, with believing that because of what you did, it has lessened yourself as a Jedi."

Anakin stared at her, both anger and tears in his eyes. She knew she was bringing up some painful memories, but it was needed.

"Ani, if you do the same thing here, it would turn out the same way. It may feel like you're doing the right thing in the moment, but after that moment has passed, you will regret it. More than you know."

Her comm-link buzzed, just as Anakin's face turned to one of confusion.  She raised up a finger to tell him to wait while she answered the call. Yoda's voice came over the device on her wrist.

"Consensus, the council has come to", he said. "Permission, you have, to tell Skywalker of the plan."

Ashara sighed in relief, while Anakin and Ahsoka's face turned to one of confusion. Teriko was also confused. She just motioned for them to follow her.

"If you want to know more, we're going to find a place to sit down first", she said. "It has to do with Obi-Wan."

The three followed togruta, and found a place outside for all of them to sit. It was a nice day outside, with beautiful weather, and warmth shining from the sun. Ashara reveled in it for a moment, before she turned to Anakin with serious eyes.

"Before I tell you this, I need you to promise that you will listen to the entire explanation before you get mad."

Anakin frowned. "Why do I need to-"

"Just promise. All three of you."

Teriko was the first to promise, then Ahsoka. Anakin took the longest, and Ashara didn't blame him. He was already upset. Finding out that Obi-Wan specifically said not to tell him what the plan was would anger him more. But eventually he did promise, and the togruta was finally able to share what had been bugging her since the first day of Obi-Wan's "death".

"Obi-Wan isn't dead", she announced, earning shocked glances from all of them, before two of them turned to anger. Teriko mostly just looked confused.

"I felt his life force fade away", Ahsoka argued. "Master Skywalker carried him back to the temple and he was gone. We both felt it."

Ashara sighed softly. "He took a vitals suppressant thing. It basically made it so it seemed like he was dead, but he really wasn't."

"What about the shot to the chest?" Anakin countered. Ashara shook her head.

"Blast proof vest under his robes."

"So then where is he?"

Ashara smirked. "He is currently disguised as Rako Hardeen."

Anakin's hands gripped tightly together into fists. "And why was this kept from us? From me?!"

Ashara sighed softly. "I was against it from the very beginning, but the council, no, Obi-Wan, believed that it was your performance that would sell the fact that he was really dead. Both you and Ahsoka. That's why we don't want you going after Rako Hardeen."

Anakin growled and stood up. "This was Obi-Wan's idea. To keep this plan from me?"

Ashara stood up, and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Ani, you know you wouldn't have been able to act like Obi-Wan was really dead if you knew. And it needed to be believable. Everyone knows how close you two are."

Anakin shook Ashara's hand off his shoulder. "Don't touch me, Ashara", he snapped. "You were in on it too, and you've had multiple opportunities to tell me."

"I had to get permission from the council first", Ashara argued back. "I wanted to tell you from day one, but I knew that the council was right to keep you in the dark, at least until Obi-Wan managed to break out of prison as Rako Hardeen. He is doing undercover work, Anakin. And he needs our support, from the temple. If you went after him, you could blow his cover!"

Anakin just glared at her over his shoulder, and stormed off. Ahsoka stood up and looked at Ashara. "I think he could have acted it out."

With that, Ahsoka walked away too, leaving the older togruta with her padawan.

"So... why wasn't I told?" Teriko asked. Ashara turned to look at him, and rolled her eyes.

"Because you're still fairly new in terms of being a padawan, and you're quite close to Ahsoka. You would've let something slip."

"Fair enough."

"I'm glad you're easier to convince than Anakin is. I just hope he doesn't do something stupid."
