Chapter Fifty-Nine
Ashara stood off to the side with Hunter, who was scanning the area. It was dark out, so she couldn't see very far, but she could sense the critters out there. She could also hear Kix and Jesse talking in the background, mainly about the clone she was standing next to.
"So I get what makes the other batchers unique, but what's so special about Hunter?" Jesse asked.
"He can put up with the other three", Kix said not so quietly. Ashara rolled her eyes, and she could feel amusement from Hunter, though he didn't let it show. She was curious as to what his mutation was, so she didn't speak, and instead listened closely.
"He was engineered with heightened senses", Tech said out of the blue. "A place like the Cyber Center, Hunter can feel the electromagnetic frequencies from anywhere on the planet."
Ashara tuned out at that point, looking to Hunter. "Heightened senses, huh? That must have been a nightmare to deal with at first."
Hunter hesitated. "At first, yeah. But over time, I grew used to it. Sometimes it does get too much, and it's harder to keep myself in check, but that hasn't happened in a long time."
"That's good to hear", Ashara said softly. "I wanted to ask you, did you personally know the squad that I was assigned to lead?"
Hunter's eyes darted to the ground briefly before they swiveled around to meet Ashara's.
"We were part of the same generation, but they've struggled finding places for us to help out unlike with the Valkyrie squad. The Republic also seems hesitant to have us help, since we tend not to listen to orders."
Ashara chuckled. "You sound like Anakin and I. We're part of the main effort in this war though, but we also have tendency to ignore certain orders or twist them to suit our needs better. It annoys the council so much."
Hunter smiled, before scanning the forest some more. Ashara turned when she heard Rex's voice.
"Listen up, we have to move out", he said. Ashara smiled at him taking charge.
"Commander Cody's in no position to move", Crosshair started challenging Rex's orders.
"Already called in evac", Rex argued. "Kix will stay with Cody until it arrives. General Ki is in charge now."
"Rex", she called softly. "It's okay. I know you're nervous to work with the Bad Batch, but they're really okay. They just have a different skill-set to what you're used too. But, I'm assuming that since you're ready to go, you've come up with a plan?"
Rex nodded. Ashara smiled at her love. "Good. Then let's get moving. Hunter, lead the way."
He nodded, and the group began following after. Ashara looked at Kix and Cody.
"Take care of him", she told the medic. "And take care of yourself."
"I will", Kix said, before shooing her away. She hurried after the group, catching up to them in no time. She chose to stay at the rear, so that way she could sense if they were being snuck up on.
By the time the sun rose, they still had not reached their destination, but they did happen upon a separatist outpost.
Ashara moved up to the front next to Rex and Hunter.
"Not our primary target", Hunter reported to the general. "It's an outpost. Should we take it?"
Ashara nodded. "If they spot us, this entire mission will fail."
"Alright", Hunter said. "What are your orders? We pick them off from the tree line one by one?"
Ashara shook her head, and looked to Rex. "Got any ideas, Rex?"
"I was actually thinking of taking a page from their book", he said, and Ashara could practically see the smirk on his lips. The lips she wanted to kiss so badly. She shook the thought from her head, and smiled.
"Sounds good to me", she said softly. "Let me get their attention first." Hunter and Rex nodded, with Rex radiating amusement. She stood and calmly walked out, stopping in the center of the clearing.
"What the?" a droid said. "Who are you? How did you get out here?"
Ashara put on a scared act. "I... I don't know how I got here. I don't... I don't remember anything. Do you think you could help me?"
The droid hesitated. "I don't know... I'd have to contact my superior."
"Oh, well you're no fun", Ashara said, clearing her face of all emotion as she grabbed both her lightsabers.
"Wha-! A Jedi!" the droid said. Ashara cut off it's head, and started blocking the shots from the other droids.
"Now, boys!" she shouted, and instantly the sounds of blaster fire doubled, with the droids falling faster. They rushed into the building, taking the elevator up to the top.
Ashara found herself squished in the center of the clones, though Wrecker seemed to be missing. When they reached the top, they were surrounded by clones. Ashara leaped over Rex's head, and landed behind a droid, and between two other ones. She left the one in front of her for Rex, and instead took out the two on either side of her, just flipping her lightsabers around to face backward and pushing it through the droids chest-plates.
The moment the last droid fell was when Wrecker finally made it up to the top.
"Is it over already?" Wrecker asked as he pulled his helmet off and looked around in disappointment. "Aw, man!"
Ashara chuckled and walked over to Tech, who was sitting at one of the computers. Through the window she could see their target, the Cyber Center.
"It looks like the Cyber Center itself has minimal guards, about 30 droids", Tech said, looking through the computer. He hesitated and started typing on the computer. "Wait. Wait. I got a massive signal coming in. A whole platoon of droids is headed this way."
"Someone's noticed our handiwork back at the crash site", Hunter said.
"Yeah", Rex said. "Make sure you keep an eye on those incoming Separatist forces. I want to know when they reach this outpost."
"You got it, Cap", Tech said.
"We need to go, now", Ashara said, moving toward the elevator. "Or else we're gonna be trapped at the cyber center."
The group nodded, and they followed, their pace quickening. The adrenaline was beginning to pump high, and the Jedi knew that the upcoming battle was exciting them all. These men were literally built for war, so they would always be excited by a battle.
"We'll grab some speeder bikes and flank em from the back."
Ashara nodded to Hunter, and the group split into two, with Hunter leading Tech, Crosshair and Wrecker to the speeder bikes while Ashara led Rex and Jesse to the front. Crosshair would find some point between the two groups to snipe the droids from above.
They reached the outpost with little trouble, and she spoke quietly into her com-link. "Is everyone in position?"
With two comments of affirmation, she began plotting the sequence in her head.
"Cap, you wanted to know when the Separatist forces reached the outpost. Well, they're getting there just about now."
That changes things.
"Tech, I need you to get inside as fast as possible. You're the best with technology, you'll be able to find out what's going faster. Rex will meet you in there, this was his mission. The rest of us will take care of the droids."
She scanned the grounds and noticed one of the droids holding an active holocomm.
"Crosshair, take out the droid with the holocomm."
"On it", the sniper said. Within moments, the droid was gone, and all the droids were in a panic trying to figure out where the shot came from.
"Our time is now, boys!"
She charged out into the battlefield, leaping into the fray. Her dual lightsabers moved swiftly, and she was light on her feet as she cleared a path to the door. She paused for a moment to see a group of droids come around the corner from the backside of the building. Hunter's group must be close to getting in now.
"Rex, get in there!" she shouted. "I'll cover you!"
Rex nodded, and darted out from behind his shelter. Ashara blocked the shots that came close to hitting him. Just as he got to the door, Hunter and Wrecker came out, taking out the last few droids. The togruta nodded to them, and Rex ran inside, just as the platoon of droids appeared on the edge of the clearing.
"Here comes company", Ashara called to the boys just as a group of super droids began shooting at them. The Jedi recalled a trick Yoda had once told her about, and focused the force around one of the super droids, picking him up and turning him around, so he was shooting at his fellow droids instead of them. She could feel the Batch's astonishment, but she didn't lose her focus.
When the droids were closer, she crushed the droid's plate armor inward, and let him drop onto another droid. She leapt forward with her lightsabers, and started cutting the droids in half, but even they were too much for her and she had to start retreating with the Bad Batch. They slowly retreated back to the room Rex and Tech were in, and Ashara could feel Rex's disbelief wafting off of him. She glanced at his face, and saw his complete and utter disbelief as he started at the hologram in front of him. It didn't mean much to her until she heard what it was repeating.
"CT-1409", she heard it say. Her eyes widened. If she recalled correctly, that was Echo's number. She closed her eyes, and forced her own surprise down, and called to Rex.
"Rex. We need to go", she called to him. He didn't react. She looked to Hunter, who nodded at her, and she rushed over to Rex.
"Rex, I hear what it says too, but we need to go", she said, grabbing his hand. The grip on his helmet was loose so she grabbed that and put it on his head, before grabbing his hand again, and pulling him away. At that, he finally registered what was going on, and took control of his own body again. They ran with the group out the backdoor to the ride that Crosshair had found them.
Once they were out of danger's reach, Ashara finally found a seat next to Rex, who was staring at the floor, eyes hardened in determination.
"That number, Cap, what did it mean?" Tech asked. The Jedi looked to Rex for what she already suspected.
"CT-1409", Rex said without hesitation. "That was Echo's number. He's alive."
