Chapter 3
Leopardspots purred as she watched her new apprentice, Skywhisper, perfect her hunting crouch. "Good!" Leopardspots mewed. "Now find some prey and practice your stalking."
Skywhisper nodded and perked her ears up. Mouse! she thought, spotting a mouse under a leaf. Stalking the mouse, she quietly crawled over to it. When Skywhisper was close enough, she turned around facing towards Leopardspots, as if she wanted to ask if she was doing it right. Leopardspots nodded, and the blue she-cat continued her hunting. Staring closely at the leaf, she pounced on it, and gave the small gray creature a killing bite.
Skywhisper held the warm fresh-kill in her mouth. "Let's take it back to camp," her mentor, Leopardspots, purred. They padded back into camp, Thunderstar walking over to them. "Hi, Skywhisper," the LightningClan leader meowed to his daughter. "I'm starting a Clan meeting now that you're back, it's bad news."
Skywhisper gasped. "Bad news? What happened? Did the deputy, Stormeyes, die?"
Leopardspots purred. "No, Skywhisper, he's right over there," she mewed, flicking her tail to a muscular dark gray tom.
"Oh... Oops!" Skywhisper laughed. Thunderstar climbed to the top of Highrocks.
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather under the Highrocks for a Clan meeting!" he yowled. Slowly all the cats in LightningClan began to gather. "I have bad news," he meowed. "WaterClan cats are moving the border, a whisker-length at a time. We must send out extra patrols, just in case they're plotting to attack."
Gasps were heard. "We'll show them it's our territory!" meowed one voice. "Moving the border?" hesitated another.
Leopardspots and Skywhisper nodded. Stormeyes climbed Highrocks. "Leopardspots," he called. "I want you to take Skywhisper, Lightningstorm, and Stormcloud out on a patrol." The four cats nodded. "I'll lead a patrol. Sparrowfeather, Whitecloud, and Cloudheart. I want you to come with me."
The patrols headed along the border. Leopardspots' patrol was on one side, Stormeyes' on the other. Leopardspots halted as they reached where WaterClan was moving the border. "Stop," she meowed to the rest of the patrol. "The smell of WaterClan is fresh, like they were here a heartbeat ago."
Suddenly the body of a blue, literally blue, tom appeared at the top of the hill. "Oh, so you notice we're taking more territory from you?" he hissed.
