Chapter 24

Ice led the way back to camp, her head raised proudly. She lashed her tail victoriously as she bounded into the camp and let out a yowl of joy. "We won! We won the battle!" She called to anyone who was listening. Moss and Feather darted out of the nursery to cover her pelt in licks. "Yay! We beat the bad cats!" Feather said, her tail waving wildly. Ice turned to watch her patrol race into camp, their eyes full of triumph and joy. She leaned down and licked each of her kits between the ears. "Yes, we did." She whispered. She lifted her head and gazed around the camp. Fang began calling names for patrols. "Bramble and Cinder, take your apprentices out and go hunt near Twolegplace. Fox, Lightning, Hazel, and Thistle, see what you can find in ThunderClan land. Bring back as much prey as possible. We'll have a feast!" He yowled, and the Clan joined him. As the patrols headed out, Ice led her kits over to Fang. They let out excited squeaks and pounced on him. Ice purred as Misty chewed on his tail while Feather pummeled his side with her tiny paws. Fang turned and scooped Misty up in his jaws. Feather yelped in shock and leapt away, her eyes wide. Then, she purred in amusement and bounced over to Moss. Ice touched her nose to Fang's and sat beside him and their kits to wait for the hunting patrols to return.

Ice lifted her head hopefully. Her belly rumbled. The hunting patrols still hadn't returned and it was already getting dark. Ice sniffed the air, and leapt to her paws. "They're back!" She called to her warriors. The whole camp burst into life, warriors rushing to the camp entrance. Moss, Misty, and Feather stayed beside Fang, their eyes half closed. They glanced at Ice. Joy surged through her as Bramble led the way into camp, carrying two mice. Ash followed him, with his sister, Blossom, on his heels. They each had a thrush. Cinder brought up the rear with the second patrol just behind her. She was dragging a plump squirrel, struggling to hold it. They all deposited their prey on the pile, beside a rabbit and a mouse that were already there from earlier hunts. The second patrol had much more from ThunderClan territory. Lightning had dropped two voles on the pile already. Fox put a small mouse next to that, then dashed out of camp to fetch more prey. Hazel deposited a crow beside Thistle's scrawny rabbit. Ice watched as Fox and Lightning reappeared at the camp entrance, each of them holding a bird. Once all the prey was on the pile, Fang stepped forward. He grabbed a squirrel in his jaws and tossed it to Storm and her kits. She dipped her head to him, her eyes shining gratefully. Fang gave Fox a mouse and he padded off to share it with Maple. He glanced at Ice and picked up a rabbit. He padded towards her and dropped the prey at her paws. "Share it with the kits." He whispered in her ear. Then, he continued his duty, distributing prey until almost every cat had something. If they didn't, they were sharing with another cat. Fang snatched up the last vole and gave it to Dandelion. Then, he bounded over to Ice and the kits. Ice hadn't even touched the rabbit yet. He nudged her gently and leaned down to sniff the rabbit. "Come on, let's eat! Everyone else is already fed." He mewed. She purred and began to tear into the rabbit, dividing it for the kits. She tossed one of the legs to Moss, and another to Misty. She gave Feather the ears and a chunk of meat. Ice watched as her kits devoured the prey hungrily, their eyes bright with happiness. Fang bent his head and bit into the rabbit. He ripped off a mouthful and chewed it slowly. "Delicious!" He meowed. Ice took a bite and swallowed. Together, they finished the rabbit until there was nothing left but bones and fur. Ice glanced at the kits. They were laying in a heap of fur, all snuggled together. Soft snores echoed across the camp. She gazed around the clearing to see that all the cats were at peace, grooming their fur and finishing their prey. Storm was bundling her kits to their nest, her eyes filled with love and care. Ice stood up and stretched, arching her back and reaching out with her front paws. She leaned down and picked Misty up by her scruff. Fang grabbed Feather and they carried the kits to the nursery. Once all three were in their nest together, Ice led Fang to her own den. She curled up in her nest and blinked sleepily at her mate. He stepped in beside her and laid down, his pelt pressing against hers. "Goodnight, Fang." She whispered softly. He licked her ear. "Goodnight." He said.
