Chapter 17
Ice padded into the medicine den with Fang at her side. She almost stumbled and fell, but Fang supported her with his shoulder. Once they were in the clearing, Fang flicked Willow with his tail. The medicine cat had been busy talking to Clover and showing her certain herbs and their uses. She whirled around when Fang tapped her and gasped when she saw Ice's leg. Ice glanced down at her foreleg to see how bad it really was. Shock pulsed through her, making her fur stand on end. Blood streaked her white fur from the gash, all over her chest and front legs. Her white fur was matted and stained a dark red color. She leaned down to lick at it, but pain scorched through her when she touched it. Willow padded to her herb stores and grabbed a few leaves and seeds. "Lay her in that nest over there," she ordered Fang, flicking her tail to a mossy nest nearest to her own. Fang led Ice over to the nest and helped her get comfortable in it. "Thanks, Fang." She whispered to her mate. He licked her cheek and dipped his head, stepping back as Willow padded up. She dropped a bunch of herbs at the edge of Ice's nest. Ice recognized cobwebs and poppy seeds among them. Willow turned to Fang. "I'll need moss soaked in water and some fresh prey." She told him. He nodded and backed out of the den. Willow fixed her gaze on Ice, shaking her head crossly. "I knew you weren't ready for your normal duties yet. But you were so sure about it." Willow muttered, half to herself. Ice just sighed and settled down as Willow inspected her wounded leg. Blood was still gushing from it, dripping into the nest. Willow leaned down to her herbs and grabbed a mouthful of cobwebs. She placed them over the cut in Ice's leg and pressed down gently. Ice grunted as small, sharp pains shot up through her leg. "Lick it to keep them in place." Willow ordered her as she let go of Ice's leg. Ice licked fiercely at the cobweb covered wound. Blood seeped through the pale gray covering slowly. After the cobweb had sat on the wound for a short time, Willow peeled it off to reveal the gash once more. Dried blood edged the cut, but none flowed from it. Ice sighed in relief and let her body relax. Willow sniffed at the wound, then picked up another leaf. She chewed it up and spat it out onto Ice's leg. "This is marigold. It'll stop infection from setting in." Willow told Ice as she rubbed it into the cut. Ice nodded and watched the medicine cat work. Soon enough, Ice couldn't see the marigold poultice anymore. Willow had rubbed it into the wound perfectly. The gash no longer hurt. Ice rested her injured leg against her chest. Just then, Fang returned with a dripping bundle of moss in his jaws. He dropped it on the edge of Ice's nest and turned as Tiger padded in after him with a squirrel in his mouth. He took the prey from his apprentice and dropped it into the nest. Ice purred happily as the squirrel's scent wafted into her nose. "Thank you." She said. Fang nodded. He glanced at Willow. "Is she okay?" He asked the medicine cat. Willow nodded. "She'll be fine. But I'm keeping her here for two more days, to see how she gets along." The medicine cat replied calmly. Ice tried her best not to sigh. Fang licked Ice between the ears. "I guess I'll see you later." He said, stepping away from the nest. Ice nodded as he disappeared into the bracken tunnel.
