Chapter 16
A paw prodded Ice in the ribs, waking her up instantly. She looked up into the dark blue eyes of Fang. His gaze was filled with worry. "Are you feeling better?" He asked gently. Ice nodded and yawned sleepily, her eyes half closed. She stood up and almost fell over. Fang rushed forward, helping her walk by giving her his shoulder to lean on. "Are you sure about that?" He questioned, anxiety sharpening his mew. Ice just nodded in reply. Her head was clearer than it had been yesterday, but the cut on her front leg ached painfully. Fang glanced down at it. "Maybe I should take you to Willow. She could give you some-" Ice didn't let him finish. "No!" She said urgently. She knew if she were to go back to the medicine den complaining about pains, Willow would make her stay for a few more days. Ice wanted to be out in the forest, hunting and checking borders. What if those rogues came back? What if one of the Clans attacked and she wasn't able to take part in the battle? Thoughts crowded her mind, making her feel dizzy. Ice shook her head slowly. "No." She repeated softly but firmly. "Don't tell Willow or Clover anything about this. I'll be fine, I promise. Why would I lie to you?" She told Fang, lifting her head to meet his gaze. His eyes were clouded with concern for his mate and leader. But Ice was confident that she would be just fine. She stepped away from Fang. "See? I can walk by myself. I'm okay." She promised him. Fang nodded and followed her to the prey pile. They chose a plump thrush to share. Once they finished that, Fang stood up and called the Clan together to send out patrols. Ice realized that they were becoming so much like the other Clans. They sent out patrols, they made sure the weakest cats were fed first, and they followed some of the warrior code. Now they even had their own medicine cat. Ice heard Fang call her name. She glanced up at him. "What?" She asked. "Do you want to come on a patrol with me and Tiger?" He repeated since Ice obviously hadn't heard him the first time. She nodded and stood up, shaking the feathers from her whiskers. Ice led the way out of camp. Fang padded up to walk beside her and Tiger brought up the rear, his ears pricked for any sound. He was a quick learner and a strong fighter. He would make a great warrior. Ice led the small patrol towards the sandy clearing where they had found the rogues. Before they even reached it, Ice knew something was wrong. The air smelled different, scents of freshly killed prey and new cats. Ice felt a growl rising in her throat. Those cats had been hunting on BloodClan land! She would show them. Blood roaring in her ears, Ice crept forward. She crouched outside a thick barrier of brambles and gorse. A shiver passed through her body. The rogues has managed to do this much in a day! They had made camp in BloodClan territory, though. They had to be chased out! The walls were too thick to see through, but they weren't very high, only a few feet. She stood on her hind legs and peered over the prickly top. She gasped at the sight. The sandy clearing was scattered with rocks and grass and moss. It wasn't very sandy anymore, only a few patches. In one corner nearest to the fence, a pile of rocks lay. The dark tabby leader, Sparrow, sat on them, his green eyes narrowed as he enjoyed the morning sun. Ice felt the fur rising along her spine. Next to the small pile of rocks was a den made of leaves and gorse branches. It looked as if it could only hold about five cats. The other den was the same. She realized there were only two dens in the camp, and both were pretty small. Inside the dens, the floor was covered with moss and soft leaves and grass. She snarled. How did they build such a perfect camp? Ice wondered how many cats were in the camp. When they had first met the rogues, there had only been five of them. Suddenly, Sparrow's head swiveled toward her. She ducked down quickly, but she knew he had already seen her. The wind had blown her scent to him. Ice heard rustling from within the camp and two heads poked out of the entrance. Ice ducked low into a clump of ferns and bracken, but she knew that her bright white fur would give her away. One of the cats at the entrance growled a warning. "What are you doing here?" Ice took a deep breath and began to step forward when she saw who the cats were talking to. Fang and Tiger were in front of them, standing straight and lashing their tails furiously. They felt the same anger as Ice. She caught a glimpse of the cats. One was a pure black she cat, whose dark green eyes were flashing with anger. The cat standing beside her was a dark brown tabby tom that looked similar to Sparrow until she saw his eyes. They were amber, shining with hostility. "What are you doing here?" This is our territory, not yours." Fang replied calmly. Tiger had his teeth bared and Ice willed the apprentice to be as calm as his mentor was. "This is our camp. Not yours. Why are you here?" What do you want?" The black she cat repeated, irritation edging her question. Fang sighed. "I just told you, this is our territory. We don't share it." He said, waving his tail briskly. "We don't want you in our territory." He hissed as the she cat glanced at her friend, confusion clear in her eyes. Ice's breath caught in her throat as the she cat's gaze hardened and stepped forward until she was a whisker from Fang's nose. "We don't care what you want." She snarled in reply. Fang raised a paw and unsheathed his claws as he lashed out, knocking the she cat away from him. "Stay out of my face, fish-breath!" He snarled, his blue eyes blazing fiercely. The she cat looked surprised. Her tom friend stepped forward, clearly trying to hold his anger in. "Don't touch my friend." He hissed. Fang snorted. "And what, exactly, are you going to do about it?" He hissed back. Before the dark brown tom could answer, Sparrow darted out of the camp, his eyes flashing. "Adder, Night. What's going on?" He asked, his voice calm. The dark brown tom glared at Fang and turned to his leader. "We found these cat's trespassing when we came to check. I think they were spying on our camp." He reported. Sparrow's eyes narrowed as he looked Fang and Tiger up and down. Fang bared his teeth. Then, the rogue leader's gaze flicked to the black she cat, who was lying on the ground pressing a paw to her bleeding muzzle. "What happened, Night?" He asked her. She snarled at Fang suddenly. Ice watched as she sprang to her paws and whirled to face her leader. "That mange-pelt attacked me!" She snapped. Without waiting for an answer, she whipped around and hurled herself at Fang. Ice couldn't take it anymore. She leapt out of her hiding spot and sprang towards the cats. Sparrow's green eyes were filled with shock as he saw her. She didn't wait for him to say anything. She immediately leapt onto Night, the black she cat, and pulled her off Fang. Ice raised a paw and brought it down with all her strength on the black she cat's chest. Night yowled in pain as her claws sliced through her flesh. Ice sprang back before Night could react. Suddenly, teeth sank into her neck. She thrashed around wildly as blood spilled from her foreleg. She had opened the wound again! The teeth left her neck as Tiger leapt at the cat holding her. She dropped to the ground and whirled to see Sparrow fighting Tiger. The tabby apprentice was batting at the rogue leader's muzzle with unsheathed claws, hissing and snarling. Ice watched as Sparrow struggled to defend himself. Tiger leapt forward and slammed into Sparrow's chest, knocking the wind out of him easily. Sparrow fell to the ground, gasping for air. Night and Adder darted to their leader's side, their eyes bright with worry. Adder turned and glanced at the BloodClan cat's. He hissed and leaned forward to grab his leader's scruff. "Next time, don't start anything or we'll give you a real battle. That was only a taste of what's coming to you if you don't leave our territory." Ice snarled after the rogues as they disappeared into their small camp. She turned and glanced at her Clanmates. Fang had a cut on his shoulder that stretched down to his chest. Tiger had a torn ear tip and his side was bleeding from a small gash. Other than that, they were all fine. Ice realized that her front leg was bleeding heavily, and her neck ached where Sparrow had bitten her. They had better get back to camp quickly. "Let's go." Fang whispered as he gently nudged her along the familiar path towards home.
