Chapter 1. The beginning

'Welcome.'

My eyes wandered back to the main entrance at the base's Northside. With a mustered smile on my face, I shook Lennox's hand. 'Nice to finally meet you; I am Sky.' Lennox returned the warm smile. 'William Lennox.' He took a step back and eyed me briefly, nodding in the process. 'You look a lot like your uncle.' I had heard that before. I looked more like my uncle than my dad. Everyone who knew my dad and my uncle, would say the same thing.

My uncle, Matthew, or Matt, as everyone in my family called him, worked for the military for as long as I can remember. I barely saw him on any family occasions. The world was small. My parents, my aunt, Susan, uncle Matt and my cousin, Kyle. That was the small world I grew up in until my parents died. We kept in touch, and uncle Matt knew I barely left the house and isolated myself. He asked me to spend the summer in Washington DC, which had seemed like a good idea then.

'So, you're going to spend your summer here?' I nodded. 'Yeah, my uncle asked me to visit him, so...' I trailed off, following Lennox inside. The inside was even more massive than the outside. The lobby was decorated with simple tiles that eyed a little sober, but the chandeliers were beautiful. It was something I never would've given thought a military base would have. This building had been used for a different function before the US army started to use it. Lennox used his keycard to open a double door, leading me straight to the main hanger.

I held my breath, taking in every detail. Besides the many military vehicles. Was the hanger also filled with other cars? Sports cars. The Autobots definitely had beautiful alt-modes. People walked around, chatting with each other, checking up on the vehicles or working on the large platform ahead of me. Giant TV screens were hanging at the wall, probably for a debriefing with the Autobots for missions. Everything seemed organised and running smoothly, but I sensed something darker. An evil, and it created tension. My eyes slid through the hangar, but I couldn't find the source of this 'evil' and turned back to Lennox.

Lennox stepped next to me. 'Impressive, huh?' I nodded without hesitation. Not like I had expected it to be. Far beyond anything I ever imagined about uncle Matt's work area. N.E.S.T headquarters was advanced, extensive and well-organized. Lennox has years of experience and seemed like the perfect guy to run the place. Lennox pointed at a black GMC. 'That's Ironhide; he's my guardian; if you have any questions or problems, you can always go to him; I will introduce you to him later. He's recharging.' I took in the new amount of information.

'They're all friendly. Except for him...' I followed who Lennox was pointing at. A cold shiver ran down my spine. 'That's Sunstreaker... dangerous mech. He has a particular interest in killing women. The last few months, he has been calm, quite isolated from everyone else, but you never know.' Lennox offered me a tense smile. Uncle Matt never mentioned Sunstreaker to me over the phone. 'He's a... serial killer? An alien serial killer,' I asked, almost in disgust and disdain. 'I fear so... we have to deal with him, rather we like it or not, and the only reason we keep him around is that he's exceptionally skilled on the battlefield. His psychopathic traits make him fearless and a good fighter. He's born with battle instincts. You've to promise me to be careful. If you leave him alone, let him mind his business.' All I could do was nod.

As handsome as he is, it was all sham. 'He has some very concerning anger issues. Something is bugging him this week, so if you ever talk to him, which I don't recommend, you've to make sure he doesn't see any fear reflected in your eyes or any other signs that might indicate you're weak. He will use you, stalk you, and mangle you before killing you brutally. 30 days, that's the time he takes to hunt and stalk his prey and kill the victim horrendously.'
If uncle Matt had mentioned a figure like Sunstreaker hunting down people, It probably would've made me think twice before coming to Washington DC. Lennox laid his hand on my shoulder. 'I'll show you around.' I turned away from the railing, but my eyes were glued on Sunstreaker. A psychopath? Sunstreaker shouldn't be out here, given the opportunity to stalk and kill people.

Lennox showed me the most noteworthy parts of the base and even introduced me to some Autobots. As much as I loved meeting them, I was also delighted when Major Lennox left me alone for a meeting so I could explore a little bit on my own. I'm not much of a group type of person. Being on my own is just fine. If that mech hates women, it won't take long before he notices me. It made sense why there were only guys and no female soldiers or workers.

Around 12 PM, I headed to the cafeteria. Only a few people noticed me. As if I was invisible to them. I stepped in line, waiting, but soldiers kept passing me, to my irritation. 'Excuse me...?' I tried to get the soldiers' attention, who had flouted me entirely and stepped in front of me. I've been waiting in line for nearly 20 minutes. I sighed and ran my hand through my long hair dark blonde hair. I don't belong here. I'm not an 'army' type of girl.

I finally got a poor amount of food and sat in the corner. As I began eating, I felt something unsettling. Something I had never felt before made my heart drop instantly. Sunstreaker's eyes icy blue eyes were burning holes in my body. He squinted at me through hardened eyes that had a murderous glimpse. His eyes were unfounded accusations of disdain like I did something to him. It wasn't only unsettling, but also frighting. I had hoped it would've taken him longer than a few hours to notice me. I didn't know what to do. If I left, I would show him I was afraid, but I also didn't want to show him I knew he was looking at me. So, instead, I just completely ignored him.

As I finished my lunch, I nonchalantly walked away and headed back to the crowded main hangar, where I spotted my uncle talking to a soldier. I walked up to him as he finished his conversation. 'Sky.' He embraced me tightly. 'How was your flight?' I shrugged. 'Nothing too special. Bit of turbulence, but that's it.' He nodded. 'Good. I am really sorry I wasn't there when you arrived. Your father would've yelled at me if he knew.' He cracked his usual joke to pull a smile on my face, but it didn't make me smile genuinely. I quickly changed the subject.

'I was curious... Lennox told me about Sunstreaker... why haven't you mentioned it over the phone?'

'Ah, well... if you did, would you have come?'
'No. He kills people... He should be behind bars?'
'We need him; he's very skilled.'
'I bet, but he's still a psychopath.'
'Sky, relax, okay? He won't harm you if you leave him.'

I sucked in a breath. As if I had plans to talk to him. No way I will talk to a psychopath and get myself into trouble. 'He loves the fear. Don't show him that, or he will chase you. He chooses the weak ones, got it?' I nodded slowly and stepped back to let my uncle passed. I probably have to act casual.

I did a little bit of paperwork, and with one eye, I kept an eye on Sunstreaker. He was most of the time minding his own business. His holoform was whether sitting on his hood, drawing something or watching people. No one spoke to him, snapped photos of his alt-mode or even dared to dart a glance at him. I picked up some papers and walked off the platform. From my spot up here, I had a much closer and better look at his alt-mode. Spotless and shiny. The newest model of the Lamborghini Aventador. I was disgusted despite his good taste in cars. Knowing he killed people for fun angered me. It made me want to hit him, honestly. America has had some notorious serial killers as well, but they never had to deal with an alien psychopath.

Sunstreaker seemed to be a loner. Which didn't surprise me and fitted perfectly within the profile of a person like Sunstreaker. He deserved it. There was a brief moment as I passed him when we locked eyes. Behind that icy stare was a mountain of build-up frustration. Something I had not expected to see, yet, these people are deceitful, and he could simply fake it. I didn't know what to think of that stare or this situation, all I did know was that I disdained him and hated him for killing all those people, just to make him feel powerful and satisfied.
