Chapter 5 - Interlude I

Leah Marsden sensed Radiation, a warmth of inferno building within her body. It raged as if it will continue to build up within her, burning her from the inside. She stilled her, to remain calm. She knew fire burn, she knew a fire was nothing but destruction. It lay ashes and embers from anything it touched. Radiation, however, was only a fragment of fire.

The Radiation Leah was sensing came from a farmhouse before her. It was pulsing strongly but it was precisely controlled. This was a place her work led her. How often she had stopped in such settlements, this was not the last time. Behind those walls laid a Vulcan who touched the Radiation she sensed. Behind those walls was death.

I thought the Spider said the lads knew nothing of touching Radiation, Leah thought to herself. That change the plan slightly, but very well...

"I can only sense one boy touching Radiation," Jennin said beside Leah. She was one of the three sisters were assigned to Leah by the Spider.

Jennin was correct, Leah sensed only a single source of Radiation. A sensation of Radiation warmed the body of the person who was sensing it, the warmer the person felt, the more the Radiation a Vulcan was touching. Leah sensed the warmth was partially suppressed which meant the lad knew what he was touching and he had control over it. It would have been easier if the lads were clueless about Radiation.

Maybe the other one cannot touch Radiation unless provoked, it was a possibility and Leah didn't like the thought of it all.

Leah and her sister can sense Radiation because they can touch Celestial, the power of the moons. Any woman who touched Celestial can able to sense when Radiation, the power of the sun, was been touched. The sensation was a heath of warmth under the pit of the stomach spreading throughout their body. A very disturbing sensation.

"Probably the other one can't touch Radiation at will," Leah responded, "and it will be easier for us to save the world from them. We will give them a quick painless death."

If such thing existed...

Nobody will remember them, Leah said to herself scanning the farmhouse. It was a small structure made of wood with resting chambers on the upper level dotted with small windows. The lower rooms were given sizeable windows, probably an open space too, she assumed. She must not give them a chance to hide, the parents, because the work she will do had to remain unknown. It was been a hero nobody knew of and that was a life of the Order of Justice; to correct the wrongs of two millennial years ago.

Sky Kingdoms was changed by Radiation, broken by it, and the core of the Order of Justice was to make sure Vulcans and their destructive powers were kept on a leash. At times, it meant the population of Vulcans have to be controlled, and it was easier to kill them while they were still younger. It was salvation, the work had to be done.

"It's time," Leah announced.

Leah's boots rustle softly as she heard voices came from within the house; it was probably time for feasting and the Berdals have gathered around the table.

She touched Celestial, a calm storm of power embraced her, its coldness was familiar to her body, but she shivered slightly as her body dense with the power.

Her sisters followed her cue, Leah sensed them with ease. There was stillness with Celestial, a peace within. Celestial was opposite to Radiation, but Leah doubted that. Radiation was wild, raged and it often drove those men to madness. Celestial and Radiation cannot be opposite sides of power. No, Divinity was wrong.

Rebekah moved towards the door from Leah's left, Jennin was on her right; Leah had her daggers on both hands ready to strike. Elisa will protect Rebekah and Jennin's back; it was easier work to kill newly made Vulcans but Leah never take the chance to put her life and her sisters' in the path of raging fires. Any boy who touched the power of the sun was dangerous, it didn't matter for how long.

Rebekah kicked the door open, within a second Leah was inside the farmhouse's kitchen where the table was set and four people froze around it, fear and shock paralyzed them. Leah allowed her daggers to drop to the floor, she spread her palms and threaded them with Celestial.

Threading objects with Celestial meant that Leah she can move them without been in contact with them. Her connection to them was made by Celestial she touched. There was a single blue line thread from Leah's palms to each dagger. The connection was strongest if the objects were made of Moonstone or coated with one, her daggers' hilts were coated with it.

She aimed one dagger at the boy about fifteen who sat directly straight to the door, the dagger on her right hand she directed it to the woman on the foot of the table. Leah flicked her finger slightly, the daggers removed themselves from the floor by invisible hands.

But the lad was quicker; Leah sensed him touching more Radiation than he was before the moment her daggers hovered in the air by themselves.

"Skygods!" Jennin whispered as a wave of sensing Radiation washed over her.

On Leah's right, the woman dropped with a dagger on her neck as she threads to her direction. She will bleed to death.

The other dagger was deflected to the further wall by a fork as the Vulcan had intercepted it. However, Leah was quicker with her thread, she removed the dagger from the wall by Pulling it to herself by willing her mind to call back the dagger to her using the thread.

She Pushed the dagger a few inches away from her fingers, she changed its direction by angling her towards the table. Leah buried her dagger on the back of the man on her left who had stood rooted to the same spot since they blast through his door.

If he was not dead, Jennin will make sure he stayed down and never get up.

Leah Pulled her daggers to her hands, they dripped blood, the sound lost in her eyes as her heart drum. The slaughter had turned into a battle, the Vulcan will be a problem, yes, but it was four against one. A Vulcan cannot do much against such odds. Well, unless his brother can join him quickly. She cannot allow that. This had to end now.

Leah watched as the lad stood up and throw his chair towards her, she dodged to her right without taking off her eyes from him.

Where are you sisters? Leah thought with urgency as the chair hissed past her.

She can sense them yet they were not overwhelming him.

The chair hit the wall behind her, she heard it cracked and it dropped into pieces to the floor. Celestial had heightened her senses, she can react more quickly, her ears can hear the footfall of her sisters' boots, their quick breaths, and the rustling of their skirts.

"You are Watchers ain't you?" the lad said as he jumped on the top of the table. He shook his head, clearly confused. He didn't truly understand what was going on. Leah didn't blame, people viewed Watchers as saints. The Order of Justice was none of that. They were salvation.

"Where is your brother?" Rebekah asked from Leah's left. Jennin came to her right and she sensed Elisa behind her. It was about time.

"I rather die than tell you anything," he spat and dropped from the table. His sister who was sitting opposite him was on the floor crying. "Do you remember where I hide from Aamon? You will run there and never look back and when the sun breaks the sky goes to see the spires."

It was touching, truly it was, but the girl will go nowhere. She was five or six, she understood what was happening. Some secrets were best to remain within their ranks. Their Order's work had to remain secret and shelved in the heart of Spiral Pulser.

"Jennin you are with me," Leah said.

She threw her Moonstone dagger to the floor on her feet, it penetrated the wooden floor. She anchored herself with the dagger. Five central threads connected her with a dagger. Now she can Gravitational Pull or Push herself, the ability to manipulate gravity by bending it to her will; her movements were now five times faster than when she was not anchored. For five central threads, two came from her legs, two from her arms, and the last one from her neck.

Leah shot like an arrow towards the young Vulcan. He twisted his arm, he threw a punch while Leah was still midair coming straight to the lad, she felt a force of the warm wind hit hard, and it blinded her and burned her eyes to tears. She felt her back hit the wall; the pain was like thousand needles, she felt it in every part of her body. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. She fought for fresher air, the cool one; her lungs were filled with the one they were not familiar with, it burned her lungs as much it has burned her arms.

When her vision came back to her she saw that her arms were steamed red. Vulcans were dangerous because they can transform air into fire and steam at will.

Fire burns.

Leah willed Celestial to heal her. She felt her arms breezed by Celestial's touch, her body renewed. She shook off the dizziness as she stood up. Healing by Celestial didn't take time, mostly if the wounds were not fatal, and the likes of Leah who had been touching Celestial for more than a century, healing with Celestial was like breathing to her.

She checked her anchor, she saw five threads still going to the dagger coming from her. She picked up the other she dropped when she hit the wall. She looked around; Jennin had killed the girl and she stood before her with a bloodied dagger, she was probably saying a prayer, she always dedicated all her kills to Skygods.

Rebekah and Elisa had cornered the young Vulcan, they were trying their best not to give him space to do anything flammable. It was suicide to give Vulcan a space in the fight but it was also suicided for her sisters to fight a Vulcan without anchoring which was what her sisters were doing.

Leah Gravitational Push herself in the midst of the fight, she was lifted from the floor and dived towards the fight as if she was flying. Within a blink of an eye, she had her dagger buried in the left shoulder of a Vulcan.

The young Vulcan let out a soft grunt, Leah sensed his Radiation blazing. He didn't need to understand the art of healing to heal himself, he was holding as much Radiation as he can manage and it was having its own mind.

"Anchor yourself!" Leah hissed to her sister.

She punched the Vulcan while he was trying to advance towards her ignoring the dagger on the shoulder. He stumbled three steps back. Leah lightly Pushed herself towards him, touch more Celestial to enhance her physical prowess, her body became dense and solid, she punched him straight to the face knocking him to the other room.

"Go after him," she ordered Elisa and Rebekah.

She walked towards Jennin who was done with her prayers.

"I hope you asked her where is her other brother."

"She said he was supposed to be feeding the chickens but he was not there when she and Edrick went to look for him."

Leah sighed. The farm was far from other farms and towns. He could be either on his way to Amalthea or Iron City for all she knew. The mission had failed and the Spider will have a fit if she didn't find the boy. But they will find him, as long as he touched Radiation, Leah will be able to sense him.

"We will hunt for him and we will find---"

Leah turned sharply towards the direction of the young Vulcan and her sisters, her mind was more focused on finding Aamon, and she was keeping the warmth of Radiation at bay by Celestial. Edrick's Radiation shocked her.

The fire had cracked and a scream rang in Leah's ears. What could have gone wrong in so little time?

Before Leah knew what was happening, a ball of flame big as the room shot towards her. Sweat dripped from her face, the air hissed and burned; Leah's heart came to the button of her throat as she saw the raging of fire coming to her. She didn't think, there was no time. She Pulled herself to the dagger she had anchored herself to it on the floor close to the door, her body jerked towards the dagger with an invisible force pulling her. The flames licked her back and she screamed in pain, it was nothing like she had ever felt it before. Tears blurred her vision, her body shook; the pain was excruciating.

Oh Skygods, fire burns.

She didn't hear Jennin's scream, it was drowned in the midst of her pain. Leah immediately Pushed herself to the upper wall. The wall became her floor and the floor was her wall. She was already healing her back wound with Celestial. Her hands trembled, her eyes teared. Fire wounds weren't like a thousand needles of pain, it was beyond that.

Leah looked where Jennin was standing and only burnt bones remained. This was not what it was supposed to happen, it was a simple mission, yet her sisters were dying.

Edrick came from another room with blood on his shirt. A sister had wounded him but Radiation can also heal, more effectively than Celestial.

Everything was happening so fast Leah didn't have a chance to sense him, to feel the about amount of Radiation he was touching. There was rage about it, it was like the heart of fire. She felt herself sweating, warm from inside her and the coldness of Celestial couldn't damp it.

The lad was unconscious of Leah until he was half away across the room, she didn't attack, for two centuries she had never sensed as Radiation from a boy of fifteen with such accurate control.

Edrick advanced to piles of bones where his sister was, he had cremated her in his rage. And now he directed it at Leah. He raised his left hand, a ball of fire small as an eyeball came into life right from the air until it was big as three heads. From records Leah knew it was hard to create fire directly from the air itself, it required a large amount of Radiation, and Edrick didn't seem to care.

Leah ran to the right on the wall as it had become like a floor to her as Edrick throw his fireball at her.

From a corner of her eye she saw Edrick with a frown of concentration, he was already planning his next fire assault. While she was still running to the right, she Pulled herself abruptly to the dagger, she had anticipated the jerked her body will feel and her body adapted to it. Immediately she Pushed towards him. She punched him in the gut, her body was still dense with Celestial, she touched more as she punched him. Smile dotted her face as he gasped for breath. She swung another punch to his jaw, the crack of bone filled the burning room and the cracking burning wood was only a whisper. Her physical prowess was enhanced with Celestial five times than a normal person.

"Where is your brother?!" Leah asked gritting her teeth.

"I am not gonna tell you Pulser-cursed Watcher a thing."

Leah swung two fists consecutively, she kicked against the table which he broke in half as he fell through it. Forks fell on the floor with a thud and plates echoed when they fell and break into pieces.

"Leah?" Elisa said.

She came out of the other room which looked like another resting chamber, most of it was burnt just like most of her clothing. The fine dark dress she was wearing was burnt from her left shoulder exposing her arm but the blossom was still covered. Below, her dress was burned to her knees. She looked bad with her hair tangled and spiky. She was still alive but Celestial coming from her was weak. Elisa must have strained her will as she healed herself.

"I had used most of my Celestial healing myself," Elisa looked at the Vulcan with a shiver. "He burned me on my face, legs, and arms. He burned my face Leah!"

"It's best we kill him now," Leah said as Edrick stood up.

The warmth of Radiation coming from was decreasing, Leah sensed. It was better for her and Elisa. If he weakened he was still dangerous, however, won't let her guard down.

"I will do the same to you. You won't get to Aamon," his voice was rough like words tangled on his tongue.

The dagger Leah had used on him earlier was glowing molten red on his hand. It was not pure Moonstone but it still reacted the same way. Moonstone turn red when Radiation was channeled through it.

Leah Pushed herself with a dagger thrust forward. Edrick was ready this time, he dodged twisting his body to the left coming behind her. Leah canceled her Push. She felt him shoving her to the rack that holds cooking pots with enough force to send her crushing through it. Her head hit the wall and she saw stars. He learned faster. The longer the fight drag on the more he learned.

Leah dismissed stars in her eyes with Celestial. She sensed him further from her. She turned around turning knocking plates and pots. The young Vulcan went for the weaker one.

Elisa dodged the young Vulcan's dagger helplessly. Leah knew if she didn't intervene soon, she will lose this fight. The Order of Justice had never lost a fight. For two thousand years and she was about to stain that record. No! She won't lose.

She Pulled herself to her dagger. She then Pushed herself towards Elisa and Edrick as she had done before. However, this time, Edrick had anticipated her move.

Skygods! He was really learning.

Edrick jumped back allowing space between them. The air around them grew still. Her ears heard nothing of the world. Her heart raced, fight to rip open her chest. Within herself, she felt warm. Radiation was been touched in a great deal. The lad was trying to end it too.

Leah continued her Push towards the wall. She had left Elisa exposed but there was nothing more she can do. Her dagger wouldn't able to anchor a strong Shield. She jumped on the wall, she jogged on the wall like it was a floor and it had become a floor to her.

She watched with horror as Edrick inhaled deeply with his mouth and he exhaled a pure orange flame which its lights blind white-lights that had helplessly illuminate the room. The air was no longer still, it boiled. Elisa screamed before the flames devoured and silenced her. Leah gritted her teeth as she also caught fire on her right-hand side, she couldn't drop the dagger yet the pain was beyond words.

Leah jumped on Edrick with her burning hand raised. She drove her dagger into his chest. She twisted it and pushed it to the hilt. However, Edrick didn't drop, instead, he raised his hand with a molten red dagger and jabbed it on Leah's neck. It burned her from the inside. She didn't feel it on its point of entry however her whole neck was on fire.

Leah let go of her dagger. Edrick dropped to the floor. Her hand went to the dagger on her neck but she also dropped before she could remove it. Darkness came over her in waves; she can still remove it and healed herself. She still had enough Celestial for that. Regardless, her body didn't obey her commands. The darkness thick as Spiral Pulser clawed into her and she failed to shake it off.
