Chapter 9 The Shed
Marinette's POV:
I saw a shed out back. Does Adrien ever use it for anything?
I would ask, but it makes me feel a bit silly. It is not my business to know why he keeps it around.
I sigh. It has been two weeks since the article appeared in the paper. I have to move out of his place soon.
Adrien came outside to take out some trash when he saw me.
"Hey, Marinette, I see you found my shed," He said.
"Yes, and it is rather nice," I responded.
"I was thinking about fixing it up." He said.
"Wow, that is great, Adrien," I replied. I felt sad perhaps he would not miss me when I moved out after all. I had been looking for a new place and narrowed it down to two options.
I was going to ask his opinion. Now, I was not so sure I should bother.
Adrien's POV:
When I took the trash out I saw Marinette looking at the shed. I told her I was planning to fix it up. I noticed she looked sad.
Was something wrong? Had I done something to offend her?
"Say, did you want to help me refurbish the shed?" I asked.
"I would be glad to help," She said. She looked away as she spoke.
I thought we made progress, but now she refuses to look at me. I sigh.
I got some supplies out of the house and returned shortly with them.
"Marinette, you pick out the paints you like the best," I offered. I hoped she would understand.
"I like the green and black," I heard her say. I was surprised. Those colors were my favorites, but I had not told her.
I helped her fasten a mask, and goggles to her face. Then, put one on me as well.
We got to work. I admired her in more ways than one.
I made sure once we finished to help clean off the brushes.
Marinette and I went into the house together. I prepared lunch and Marinette sat at the table. We ate and I noticed there was a deathly silence. Was it about the newspaper ad from weeks ago? Was it still troubling her?
I couldn't care less what anyone else thought as long as we were happy.
After the meal, Marinette helped with the dishes.
"Adrien, thanks for letting me help with the shed, I will be back soon to finish the rest of the changes to it," Marinette said.
"Marinette, wait," I grabbed her arm. I did not want her to walk away without an explanation.
"Adrien, I found another place to stay," Marinette began. Then, she took a deep breath.
"I move out tomorrow. I feel it is for the best for both of us, and I promise I will come visit," Marinette explained.
"Y-you are l-leaving me?" I felt tears form in my eyes. I did not know why, but I felt hurt. I was hurt that she intended to move without letting me inspect the place first. How did I know she would be safe there?
"Adrien, I am not moving out of town. I am only moving to another building. I will come to help with the shed and ..." Marinette said. I looked into her eyes. I leaned in and held her close. I sobbed as I laid my head against her chest. Did not she know how much I love her?
That evening, neither of them had much sleep. The next day Marinette finished packing her few belongings, and Adrien sighed. He hated to see her go. He hugged her. Marinette hugged him.
"Take care," Adrien said.
"I will, I promise," Marinette said. She walked to the place that was to be her new home. She already had the key. She opened the door and stepped inside. Somehow it felt colder than at Adrien's place. She shut the door and locked it. She put her things inside the small bedroom.
This is home, she thought. She did not know it, but Adrien had added a few things while she was not looking. She probably would have stopped him had she known.
Adrien went to the shed and looked inside. The paint was dry now. He sighed. He added a few other touches to it. He hoped she would return soon.
Marinette's POV:
Marinette felt her stomach rumble. Her breakfast had been small. It was so she would not stop herself from moving away. She looked in the cabinets. They were all bare. What was she to do for food?
She saw a small bag by the table. "Huh, where did this come from?"
She opened it and saw a note.
Dear Marinette,
I packed you a lunch. I am sorry you felt a need to move.
I hope it was not something I did. I tried to be a good host.
My place won't be the same without you in it. Well, beautiful, I hope things are good at your new place. If not you know you are always welcome at mine.
Love,
Adrien
Marinette finished reading the note and blushed. She smiled. Oh, Adrien, she thought he was one thoughtful guy. She ate the sandwich, then the chips, and cookie. She enjoyed the bottled water too.
I will find a way to pay him back. I will.
She finished lunch and went to help more with the shed.
"Hi, Adrien!"
"Hi, Marinette!" Adrien said.
Marinette held up the stuff she had found on the sidewalk. "I found this on my way over here."
Adrien grinned at her. "That is the items of mine that have been missing for months," He explained.
"Glad I found them then," I replied. I saw the gleam in his eyes. I felt jealous of whoever she might be.
I saw him enter the shed. "Right this way, my lady," He said with a bow. I laughed. I saw the paint had dried. I noticed a nice rug that matched the paint was on the floor. Wow. "It is missing something. I know what it needs, one of those lamps on the floor. Oh, and a stool maybe, a desk, or a bean bag chair." I commented. Adrien nodded his head in agreement. "I agree. Oh, and there is another outlet over here. It would be perfect for a small fridge he said. To store snacks in." He said.
I got out my notepad and drew the ideas we had in mind on it. I added a few more touches to it before I showed, the sketch to him. "So, what do you think?"
"I think, it is amazing someone as talented as you is not married," Adrien blurted out. I blushed. Why did he always have to make me blush? It is not like we were together.
I watch as Adrien makes some of the items I found work with what's already in the shed. I see him remove; a clothes rack from the discarded bag by the shed's door. Before I can ask what it is for, he places it on the other side of the lamp.
I pull out the tiny object I found outside the window to my new place. Somehow it suits the shed's decor better. I place it on the rug.
Adrien and I step back to admire our work. He sees me about to fall and catches me. I don't say a word as he snaps a photo of me.
