Chapter 11 The Stray
Adrien's POV:
A few days later...
I was putting some finishing touches on the fence. I had taken down the broken bits and put up some new ones. I had the new gate part to install. I heard noises near my left leg.
I looked and saw this gray kitten without any tags or collar. "Where did you come from little guy?" I asked.
The kitten mewed. I smiled. It sure was cute. Where should I keep it? I know I owned the entire place, but would a kitten fit in well?
I heard someone arrive because I could footsteps approach me.
The kitten hid behind my legs like it was frightened. "Hello?" I called out.
"Hi, Adrien," I smiled when I saw it was Marinette. "Hi, Marinete, look what I found?" I said showing her the kitten. "Awe, it is a pretty kitty," Marinette said. She stroked its fur.
I smiled at how gentle she was with it. I supposed I could give it to her unless she preferred me to keep it here. "Does it have a name?" She asked. "I did not see any identification," I replied. "Awe, the poor thing has no home. It looks a bit young to be alone in the world," Marinette said.
Marinette went inside and found some dishes. She set up some water for it. "I will see if I can find some cat food, "She said. "Oh, here, " I said and handed her some money. "I will back with food for her," Marinette said. "Her?" I asked with my eyebrows raised as I finished the first half of the new gate. "Yes, her, the kitten is a female, Adrien," She explained. "Oh, no wonder the cat glared at me like was insulted when I called it a little guy earlier," I said.
She left to purchase some food for the cat. I hoped she would get it a collar, and a bed. I did not say as much. I worked on the second half of the gate. No sooner had I closed it than a big dog approached and growled. The poor frightened kitten ran and hid under the shed. Well, I thought, I suppose Marinette can help me get her out when she returns.
Marinette returns with the cat food, bed, toys, a cat scratching post, cat treats, and a collar. I see the name, "Glinda" on it. "Glinda, huh?" I say. "Yes, I thought I should give her a name. We can't just go around calling her stray forever.
I agreed Glinda was a good name and the cat must have liked it because she came from under the shed to Marinette. The kitten ate some of the food and drank the water. She jumped into the bed and took a nap. "Awe, how cute," Marinette said. "I forgot to get a cat carrier for her to make it easier, for car rides to the vet." She said with a sigh.
"Don't worry, Marinette, I am sure Glinda, will be fine," I remarked.
She hugged me. I was surprised, but I hugged her too.
"Do you think she should stay with me or go to your place?" I asked.
I could tell she was rather attached to Glinda. "I will take her if it is okay with you," Marinette said. "Sure thing, Marinette," I said.
I drove Marinette and Glinda to her place. It was because I was partially to see her place, but it would be easier for her not to forget anything. I made sure the cat's dishes were not forgotten. I helped her bring Glinda's things inside. Glinda had woken up and followed Marinette into her living room area.
"This is a nice place you have here," I said with approval.
"Glinda likes it too, " Marinette said. I could tell she was excited because of the way her eyes gleamed.
Marinette tried to hand the shawl back to me. "You can keep it," I said. I did not have the heart to tell her it used to belong to someone else special to me, my girlfriend, Lila. I never spoke about her because she died. "Are you sure?" She asked.
"Yes, I am sure," I said. Marinette seemed satisfied for now and put the shawl away.
"I wonder if she is a good mouse catcher," Marinette remarked. "I have no idea, but I suppose you will find out soon enough, " I remarked.
Marinette and I watched Glinda play with some of her toys. The two of us took turns taking photos of her with my camera. I also managed to snap a few of Marinette with Glinda, Marinette, and one of Marinette and me. She took a few of me, and one of me with Glinda. Then, she handed the camera back to me.
"You know, the kitten reminds me of one I had as a child. My mom gave him to me. His name was Fluffy." I said. Marinette giggled. "What is so funny?" I asked. "You named a cat, fluffy." She giggled more. I supposed to her it was a funny name, but I had fond memories of the cat.
"Ha, ha laugh at my expense, why don't you?" I winked at her. I saw her cheeks turn pink. Cute, I thought. What? I had not dated anyone since Lilac.
I stood up to go. "I will see you later," I said.
Marinette hugged me and Glinda mewed. "Thanks again, for the cute kitten, Adrien," Marinette said. She kissed my cheek. I blushed.
I smiled on the way back to my place. Maybe the kitten was what Marinette needed to help her be less sad after the death of her father. I know, she never said anything, but I could tell she was hurting. I know, because it was the same with me the day I lost Lilac.
The story continues in Chapter 12
Until then,
bye-bye,
little owlets!
Summer out!
*Author's note: Wow! We know who the shawl previously belonged to.
