Chapter Twenty-seven: The Wizard's Deal
Completely startled by the sudden intrusion by several people dressed in the official uniforms of the guards of the Emerald Palace , Dorothy quickly clicked the device off and turned to them, her eyes wide.
One of the guards grabbed her by the arm and yanked her off of the bed.
"The Wizard requests your immediate presence," the guard said.
Dorothy glared at the guards as they pushed her out of the room and down the hall as they all headed for the throne room.
"Why the entourage?" she hissed. "I go to the throne room every time he requests me there."
"The Wizard wants to assure that he has an audience with you," the guard explained coolly.
Dorothy curled her lip in a grimace as they dragged her into the throne room. They bowed slightly as they exited the room.
A few minutes after the guards had left, Oz entered the room through the secret door in the wall. He had a stack of papers clenched in his hand , and he shut the door behind him with his empty hand.
Oz walked over and sat down on the throne, draping his hands on the arms of it and crossing one leg over the other.
"Your contact with Glinda was detected and analyzed accordingly. I must say, you were smart not to give anything away. But luckily, I know exactly who and what you were talking about, thanks to your little caretaker android in the headquarters of the Munchkins Incognito Coup of the East," Oz said smoothly.
Dorothy didn't say a word to him.
"I assure you though, Dorothy dear, that I have given some thought to the situation before hand, and it will be easily remedied. Your precious friend will not be put to death today."
She scowled at him. "I didn't do anything you told me not to do."
"Yes, I must applaud you for that," Oz said, clapping his hands together once, then twice. "But now, I shall give you that task I had promised you for in exchange of the allowance for you to see him just once."
"What is it?" Dorothy muttered through slightly clenched teeth, though she tried not to appear as tense as she felt.
The Wizard gave the papers in his hand a single shake. "This is the speech you will give to all of the planet Oz. In it, you will denounce the Munchkins Incognito Coup of Oz, speak out against Glinda-- who is now to be known as Wicked Witch, and discredit those who speak out against me and attempt to mock me. Also, it is an announcement of our marriage."
Dorothy took a deep breath. She couldn't explode at him, no matter how much she wanted to. She had to do whatever it took to keep Bo alive.
"Fine," she said quietly.
A smile spread across Oz's face. "Good. Thank you, Dorothy, dear. I have faith that you can do it, and faith that you will do it well. Now go, you must be on the main balcony by one o'clock, and you still need to get ready. Once it's over, I will allow you to see Bo Woods."
