Chapter Twenty-eight: Dorothy's Speech

Getting ready to be presented to the public was a whirlpool of flowing fabric, pins pricking her scalp, puffs of face powder, and lipstick slathered onto her lips, and Dorothy was regurgitated from it with such sheer force that she felt like the preparations of her appearance for her speech had only taken seconds. They had her stuffed in a dazzling green dress that was extremely tight at the stomach, her brown skin had been powdered white, and her lips were overlined with deep red lipstick. She looked so hideous and detestable to her own self that she felt sick just looking at her own reflection in the mirror.

She took as deep and steady of breaths as she possibly could, trying to gather any courage that she could for the delivery of the speech Oz had written. The whole thing, she knew, was not an act of courage, but rather the lack of it.
Soon, she was ushered to the main balcony of the Emerald Palace. Down below, tens of thousands of people were crowded below, and there was a group of what appeared to be reporters closer to the castle.

Dorothy's breath hitched, but she took a deep breath, remembering who she was doing this for.

She clutched the papers tightly and looked out at the people once again. She looked back down at the papers and began to read.
"Citizens of Oz, I am Dorothy Gale, who has liberated you from the terror inflicted upon all of you by the Wicked Witches of both the East and the West."

She swallowed and looked out again.

"However, I must inform you of a new terror that we must unite ourselves against. Glinda, whom we all used to know and love as the Good Witch of the North, has turned away from Goodness and has become Wicked. As you all know, yesterday at approximately eight o'clock in the evening, she gave a speech against our dear Wizard. She has attempted to spread her lies against him. She has called the Wizard cruel, vicious, dishonest, and cowardly. I must warn you all against listening to Glinda and her lies, for they are dangerous,  and they will only lead you down a path of darkness. A path away from the Wizard's glorious light."
Dorothy paused, swallowing bitter, burning bile. Her stomach lurched like a ship on a rough wave in a storm.

"Since I am who you call the Witch killer, I promise to you all that I will bring justice to Glinda the Wicked Witch of the North."

Dorothy could barely believe or register the words on the page that were now flying out of her mouth. These lies tasted foul in her mouth-- more foul than anything she had ever tasted, yet she kept letting them come out. The tens of thousands of people below let out a ripple, a wave, a tsunami of applause and cheers that rang in Dorothy's ears.

Her chest was a hollow cavern.

"I also must bring to attention a group that has been working with her. They are not who they say they are. They are a dark, dangerous terrorist organization known as the Munchkins Incognito Coup of the East, otherwise known by the acronym M.I.C.E. They do not want peace for this planet, or its people. They wish to destroy the Wizard and all of those who support him. They wish to destroy the Emerald City. I shall also bring justice to them, as well."

Dorothy tried not to wince at these words. She hoped and prayed that they would know that she had been forced to give this speech, and that she wasn't giving it because she believed any of these things to be true.

"I would also like to address the arrest of Bo Woods three nights ago. He was a dear friend of mine, but he only traveled with me for his own gain. The night of his arrest, he kidnapped me and attempted to force me to be a part of the Munchkins Incognito Coup of the East. I am very much shocked by the state of the planet, and these depraved souls who seek to destroy everything we as a people hold dear. His execution will be..."

Dorothy choked up on her words. Not hers. They weren't hers. But they looked like hers and sounded like hers.

"His execution will be held in three days' time for his crimes."

She looked up at the sky and blinked back tears, struggling to breath. She leaned against the emerald railing of the balcony for a moment, then straightened back up.

"Along with these bits of bad news, however, I have some good news that will hopefully bring some joy and ease in these dark days," she continued, "The Wizard and I have been married in recent days, and we want to welcome the entire planet in celebration of this. We thank you all for your loyalty and your bravery. May the Wizard live as long as Oz does."

With that, she walked off the balcony and out of the sight of the thousands of clapping and cheering people.
