Chapter Seven: Flowers of Death

The group had traveled together for five days. They had fallen into a steady of routine of rising at sunrise, eating breakfast, traveling until nightfall, eating dinner, and making a camp so they could all rest.

After three days of walking in dark, twisted forests, they were all relieved to reach a place where the trees were more spread apart and there was more sunshine and birds.

Two days after that, they reached the moor and fields and fields of grass.

Every so often, they would pass a creek or a stream, as the yellow brick road would be temporarily replaced by a small bridge so travellers could pass over it.

It seemed that, for whatever reason, the farther West they got, the more Dorothy's silver boots shone and sparkled. She simply shrugged it off and did her best to ignore it, but Toto would scan them often, as if he suspected they could be dangerous.

The beginning of their sixth day of travel together, Effigy had already activated before the rest of them had awoke, and she placed each one's breakfast beside them. Dorothy hadn't told her to do that, but she figured that the android's artificial intelligence had quickly picked up on their daily routines, and, within her programming, decided to help them complete each task in their routine.

Dorothy sat up and grabbed her slice of bread. She was getting sick and tired of bread, but they never had enough time to stop and cook some meat because they had a lot of ground to cover, and whenever they stopped for the night and built fires, they were too exhausted to cook anything after they were done. Besides that, Bo claimed that the smell of meat made him sick. Why, though, Dorothy and Luav were never told. Luav needed meat though, so he would have to go off at a distance to hunt.

That afternoon, the group reached a field of bright red and pink flowers that covered the entire ground.  There was another forest in the distance, and Dorothy dreaded having to see more and more trees for days and days, but the lovely flowers were definitely a sight for sore eyes. They had soft, round petals.

"Poppies," Bo commented flatly, gesturing towards them.

The pathway of the yellow brick road was clear here, with the exception of thousands of flower petals scattered about it. At least it wasn't rough like the yellow brick road had been deep within the tangled forests.

"This field is so nice," Luav purred with a smile, "Could we stay here and rest, just for a few minutes?"

"You're right," Dorothy said, with a sudden, giddy-looking smile. "Couldn't we stay here, just for a quick nap?"

Bo sighed. "Just sitting here or napping won't change the fact that we still have a ton of ground to cover. Couldn't we rest once we reached the woods?"

"What difference would it make?" Dorothy asked, stepping away from the yellow brick road to go sit down in the patch of poppies. Luav followed her and stretched out a few feet away from her, yawning and purring.

Effigy scanned the area a bit. "Miss Dorothy is correct, Mr. Bo. It is a fine place for rest, at least for a little while."

Bo rolled his eyes and hesitantly walked over to sit beside Dorothy in the field.

She let out a yawn and lay down, the flowers towering over her form. She closed her eyes and let out a hum. Bo was completely rigid in his sitting position as he watched her.

"This is so nice," she yawned. The sunshine was warm and made her feel even more sleepy. "Can't remember the last time I had a good nap."

"I don't get why you're all so tired all of a sudden," Bo said, glancing at her and then the already sleeping Lion. "It's just a field, full of stupid flowers. Nothing that special. I swear, you could sleep through anything, Gale, so you shouldn't be so tired."

"I know I can... I'm just sleepy, that's all," Dorothy said with one last yawn. Then, she drifted off into a deep, deep sleep.
