The World Turned Upside Down
Burr was feeling good. It had honestly been a long while since Burr had felt good. That was probably why he was so set on enjoying it. Right now, at this very moment, that little shit Hamilton was getting his ass handed to him by Washington. As he thought about it again, he felt himself start to smile.
"You got a date or somethin' Burr," Jefferson quipped. "You haven't stopped smiling since the end of practice." Burr looked at his kicker friend and let loose a full grin. Jefferson's dark hair, pale skin, and brown eyes made for a nice contrast that quite a few girls were into, but they didn't have shit on Burr's tan skin, bright green eyes, and chestnut brown hair. And when he unleashed that smile, girls and guys alike would swoon. That was the smile that Burr gave his friend.
"Damn, you gotta tell me. What's her name? More importantly, does she have a friend?" The guys had all showered and were heading to lunch together before they went their separate ways for the day.
"Nah man. Knowing that punk Hamilton is getting his ass handed to him just makes me want to smile," Burr explained. Jefferson nodded.
"What's up with that anyway?" Madison said. The large offensive center was never far away from Jefferson. The two had known each other since freshman year and were basically brothers now. Burr had been wondering the same thing over the past couple months. Last year he had seen the tapes of the new kid. He had thought to himself, Damn, that kid is good. He'll make a great quarterback someday. What he hadn't expected was the coach to put the new kid in during practice. He definitely hadn't expected to hear rumors about the kid playing as a starter. He wouldn't even allow himself to believe that Coach Washington would actually put the kid in as a starting quarterback. Burr knew that the pressure had finally gotten to Lee and that the star was playing like shit. But that was Burr's spot. Coach Washington has been coaching him for three years. There was not a chance in hell that the coach was actually going to put in this kid over Burr, not if Burr had anything to say about it.
"Coach is just trying to get the kid ready for when I go off to the pros. Someone has to be there to make sure the whole team doesn't go to shit," Burr said confidently. That had to be what it was. As they walked towards New York Harbor, King's College's favorite burger joint and hangout spot, the three guys saw a young man walk towards them.
"Well, if it isn't our favorite fag," Jefferson said to the approaching figure. John's eyes immediately turned steely.
"Don't call me that."
"Oh, I'm just teasing and you know it," Jefferson replied. Wrapping his arm around the other young man's broad shoulders. "We're going to the Harbor. Care to join?" John shook Jefferson off of him.
"No thank you. I'm busy," he said, trying to sidestep away from the group of guys.
"Hold up. Seriously, let us buy you a meal. All of us owe you. Especially Jefferson. Ignore him. He's a dick," Burr cut in, stepping in front of John. John Laurens was attractive. He was what some would call "dark and mysterious." He had light skin but incredibly dark eyes and raven black hair. His chiseled features made him look like an All American boy...but something about his eyes wouldn't let him fit into that stereotype. His eyes were sad. They knew things. Things the rest of us would never know.
"Like I said, I'm busy," Laurens said clearly starting to get irritated.
"It can't wait half an hour?" Burr flashed Laurens his trademark grin. After a couple seconds Laurens's glare softened.
"Fine, half an hour. And you're paying," John said, looking at Jefferson. The three football players cheered and the group, larger now by one, headed toward the Harbor.
"How's your English class going anyway Thomas?" John asked. Jefferson's face lit up.
"I'm kicking ass in that class man! My professor used my paper as an example in class the other day," Jefferson said excitedly.
"No shit! Really man?" Madison questioned. John, Madison, and Jefferson kept talking but Burr's attention was fixed on something else entirely. As The Harbor came in sight, Burr saw the most stunning creature he had ever seen. She had incredible dark curly hair, pulled back into a ponytail. Her shorts and t-shirt showed off her dark skin and fantastically athletic body. It was her eyes that caught Burr's attention though. They were a deep chocolate brown with so much warmth that he felt like a moth drawn to the light glow of a bug zapper. The only difference was that Burr never got burned.
"I'll be right back," Burr said to his friends as he started walking towards the beautiful creature.
"Burr, no that's..." Jefferson started but trailed off as he saw that Burr was no longer paying him any attention.
"Excuse me, my name is Aaron Burr and I just wanted to tell you that you might be the most beautiful woman to grace this earth." Maybe not Burr's greatest pickup line but he was a little rusty.
"Nice to meet you Aaron Burr sir. My name's Angelica Schuyler. And while I greatly appreciate the compliment, I must inform you that I actually have a boyfriend," the young woman said with a polite smile. Burr could not get over those eyes. She tried to side step the young man but he stepped in front of her.
"That explains it then," Burr said. She looked confused.
"When I saw you standing there I couldn't help but think: you strike me as a woman who has never been satisfied." He thought that was a little better. Unfortunately, Ms. Schuyler didn't think so. She tossed back that beautiful head and let out a musical laugh.
"It was nice to meet you Mr. Burr. I'm sure I'll be seeing you around," she replied, stepping gracefully around him. Burr didn't think he had ever been rejected like that before. But as she left, he smiled. He was going to get that girl.
"Shit man, I tried to warn you," Jefferson said, grimacing at the events that had just unfolded. "That's Hamilton's girlfriend." Burr felt all the color drain from his face.
"Bull shit," Burr snapped. No way. There was no way that beautiful woman would be with a guy like Hamilton.
"Hamilton. Where do I know that name?" John muttered to himself. "Oh, that's right. Alexander Hamilton, right? Yeah, Coach Washington is having me tutor him to get his grades up so he can play as a starting quarterback one of these weeks."
And just like that Burr's good mood was shattered.
