Tales of Resurrection
The man stands staring at the portrait of himself in silence, Boyd and Martha wait to see if more would be said. Finally, after what seems like an hour, Boyd asks, "So... how did you..."
He pauses, not wanting to upset the revenant in their home, he finishes for Boyd, "How did I become a revenant?"
Shocked, Boyd tries to collect himself and nods, "Ye-yes, if it isn't too personal."
"And what if it is... would you still wish me to be in your home?" He glances to Boyd, with eyes that give a cold glare. It makes Boyd shutter, and almost fearful of him.
"Of course we would," Martha smiles, "You're a guest, and we offered you a meal. It would be rude of us not to keep our word."
His eyes turn to Martha and then gives what looks to be a nice, warm glance. Obviously grateful for holding their honor as hosts. He sees they have little since Boyd is the one mainly keeping the house from being seized, with his thievery.
"You are very gracious. I applaud you for it," the man smiles. "Not many welcome a specter into their home. Especially one that is known as being a revenant. It is admirable."
She blinks, "But... are you really a specter? You look real. Like I could touch you and feel you."
He nods, and then holds out his arm. "If you do, you will feel nothing different than if you touched your brother, skin, the worn leather, cold metal, it would be like touching an actual person. But I am most definitely a specter."
She looks to his arm, then to Boyd who looks very concern, but then decides to go through with the opportunity, and touches his arm. Her eyes show surprise. "He's right!"
Nodding , the man looks to her his eyes show a hint of his smile, even though it was hidden behind the scarf, "You are very generous and kind, both of you. I will accept being called Ahkula by you both, if you wish."
She gasps, almost completely filled with joy, as Boyd chuckles.
Martha looks to Ahkula, "so... can you explain as to why your here? Why are you not on your planet?"
His eyes grow grim, his stare normal as they were before, "My body was left here after I was murdered. I don't remember how I died, but I remember a fall from some sort of vehicle that hovered over the sands, and then for the longest time nothing..."
"Nothing?" Boyd inquires.
"I was dead... but for some reason my spirit stayed in the corpse... when... she came."
"She?" both Martha, and Boyd had asked.
Nodding, he continues, "She was one of the most beautiful women I ever saw... but she terrified me. Her ethereal form was... awe inspiring. but I thought she was the cause of why I was still trapped in my body. Some sort of soul eater."
"Soul eater?" Boyd looks confused, "Like, wraiths?"
He nods, "yes, Boyd. Like wraiths. But she was not... her voice called to me and was soothing. It put me at easy, offering me a chance to become more than I ever was as a prince. A revenant, what she called a Hunter Revenant. She then covered by body with the ink... claiming that the vengeful wrath is what was creating it. And how it could help me... she claimed me to be a hero of this planet, and how this would help me kill those who murdered me and my servants."
"What do you feel like it has actually done," Boyd asks, "You seem to believe that what she claims is false."
Nodding, Ahkula takes a breath and then continues, "It hasn't made me feel anything like what she claimed. Most look to me as a monster for what my lesser brethren have done. And the hunt has lasted for centuries... ever pulling me onward. From target to target, my quarry ever in front of me even after I had left hundreds in the ground behind me. There would always be more... every wandering and never resting. It is the curse I bear. I've hunted my own kind, who have dismissed the call of their purpose. She wants them dead, for good. This isn't the salvation I craved... and it is the curse I chose."
So what is it your purpose, do you ever plan to go home?"
He looks to her and sighs, "I don't know if I can... she has always kept my mind focused on this planets horrors."
Martha reaches over and grabs his hand, "we thank you."
He looks to her confused, "I'm not understanding..."
"For helping those get revenge when they could not themselves." she smiles. "Like with Big Jake."
His eyes show a small smile once more, "thank you."
Letting go, she walks to the kitchen, "I'll get supper ready, I'm sure even a strong revenant like yourself needs a meal now and then."
He chuckles, then looks to Boyd, "she's dying."
Nodding, Boyd sighs, "we know. A doctor said it was an illness they have no idea how to cure or even diagnose... her body is becoming frail. You're lucky to see her like this. She's been bed ridden for most of my life. Only occasionally does she find the strength to stand and move around."
Ahkula looks to him and nods, "I am sorry."
Boyd nods, "thank you... but if I could ask. If there is anything at all you can do for her. Please... help her. I've been trying to keep us afloat, but... the man who owns the house is raising the rent, and the doctor's bill is already costly..."
"That explains why you have taken to thievery." Ahkula nods.
Boyd hugs himself slightly and looks to the floor, " I feel disgusted with myself... I hate taking from others what they worked for... but I don't have a choice."
"She doesn't know?" Ahkula asks.
Shaking his head, Boyd looks to Ahkula, "no, and I would prefer she never did."
Nodding, ahkula agrees, "If I can do anything. I will."
A loud knocking comes to the door. "MARTHA!"
The shout came from a man at the door, Martha looked from the kitchen, "oh no."
