3. 001
When I woke up it was that classical music. I looked around. I was back in. I was surrounded by people in green tracksuits. I looked at my number '217' my original number. I got off of my bed and headed down. I saw the corner that Saebyeok was killed in. I could still see the blood. That's when I saw all the guards come out. This was it. "I would like to extend a hearty welcome to all of you. Everyone here will participate in six different games over six days. Those who will win all six games will receive a handsome cash prize." The manager of the masked figures said. I looked back and saw Gihun.
"Excuse me." Someone asked and I looked behind. "You said I'd be playing games, but you practically kidnapped me. So how can I believe that?" A woman asked from the back.
"I apologize. Please understand that it was necessary to maintain the game's security." The manager said to us and I looked at the girl beside me. She was pretty. I'd never talk to her though, I knew what would happen.
"What's with the mask then? Is your face also a secret?" Another woman asked.
"Yeah! Why are you hiding your face? Is this some kind of illegal gambling house?" A guy asked, if only he knew the half of it.
"Even the dealers don't cover their faces in those places." The woman said again.
"To ensure fair gameplay and confidentiality, it is our policy not to reveal the faces and identities of staff. Please understand." The manager said again. That's when someone held their jacket up.
"Did you take off my clothes and put these on me?" A girl asked them.
"What's wrong with these shoes? My shoes are limited fucking edition. They're head to find! Are you going to replace them if they get ruined?" Another guy asked, and I doubt he'd even be alive to have them replaced.
"These don't fit and the color sucks. Can I just have what you're wearing instead? I like pink." The girl holding her jacket said. That wouldn't happen either.
"I'm sorry, but that is not possible. You must be in your uniforms for the games." The manager said to us and I was hoping the games would be different.
"What about my phone? Why did you take my phone and wallet? Give them back, please." Another guy said and that wouldn't happen either.
"We're keeping your belonging safe. We'll return them once the games are over." The manager said to the guy.
"At least give me my phone. I need to check the crypto market. If I lose money, will you compensate me?" The guy asked him, of course they wouldn't.
"We will return it to you once the games are over." The manager said to him again.
"I need to monitor the real-time prices! Do you know how much I've invested?" The guy shouted at him.
"Player 333, Lee Myunggi." The manager said and he put a ddakji video on. "Age 30, used to run a YouTube channel called MG Coin. After convincing subscribers to invest in a new crypto coin called Dalmatian, causing losses of approximately 15.2 billion won, you shut down and disappeared. You're wanted for fraud and for violating telecom and financial investment laws. Current debt levels, 1.8 billion won. Player 196, Kang Mina 45 million won in debt. Player 120, Cho Hyunju, 330 million won in debt. Player 230, Choi Subong, 1.19 billion won in debt. Player 198, Jang Doyeong, 1.4 billion won in debt. Player 226, Kim Yeongsam, 1.9 billion won in debt. Player 444, Kim Namdu, 2.02 billion won in debt. Player 343, Sim Jaeseok, 2.89 billion won in debt. Player 006, Park Minwa, 3.1 billion won in debt. Player 283, Lee Eunju, 5.02 billion won in debt. Player 100, Im Jeongdae, ten billion won in debt." The manager said ans that was the biggest debt I've ever heard of so far.
"One more game!" Jeongdae shouted on the video.
"What are you looking at? Do you think it's easy to get a ten-billion-won loan? They don't lend that kind of money to just anyone! Only to those who are capable of paying it back." Jeongdae shouted at everyone in the room.
"All of you in this room have crippling debts and are now on a cliff-edge. When we first came to you, you did not trust us either. Buy as you know, we played a game and gave you money as promised. And so you trusted us and volunteered to participate according to your own free will. You have one last chance to decide. Do you want to live like a piece of trash, running from creditors? Or will you seize the last opportunity we are offering?" The manager asked and the girl beside me looked at me.
"Do you believe we'll get the money?" She asked me and I looked at her.
"Who knows." I said to her. That's when the golden piggy bank came down.
"What you see now is the piggy bank where your valuable prize money will be stored. After each of the six games you will play, the prize money will accumulate in this piggy bank." The manager said as it lowered down.
"How much is the prize money?" A guy asked.
"The prize money for the games is 45.6 billion won in total." The manager said and it was the same as before.
"45.6 billion won? And one of us will get it?" The guy asked the manager.
"We will give you the details about the distribution of the prize money after the first game. For these games, you will be given a special new advantage." The manager said to us and that was new.
"What is it?" Jeongdae asked them.
"After each game, you will be given a chance to vote on whether to continue the games or not. If the majority votes to stop the games, you can leave with the prize money accumulated up to that point." He said and I was in shock that this was an option this time around.
"Are you saying we'll still receive the money, even if we leave after the first game?" Gihun asked and I turned back to look at him. I knew that he'd be full of anger as well.
"That's correct." The manager said. That got me thinking if it was like that the last time. Ali, Saebyeok and so many more would still be alive.
"Good heavens. Excuse me. You idiot!" A woman said and she must've been making her way through the crowd.
"Mom! What...what are you doing here?" The guy from before asked. A mother and son pairing. It reminded me of the husband and wife pair from last time.
"That's what I wanted to ask you! What are you doing here? Embarrassing? If you knew what was embarrassing, you wouldn't be here! No, we won't. Come on, you're leaving. You're leaving now, okay?" I heard the mother shout. I couldn't make out what her son was saying.
"Seems like someone will be in trouble." The girl beside me said and I looked at her.
"At the end of the day, we all are." I said to her going along with everything.
"Mom, why did you come here. Do you realize where you are? This is no place for an old lady!" The son shouted at her.
"Why did I come here? To pay off your debt, of course! Do you even have to ask? You fool." She shouted at him. I knew that one of them wouldn't make it.
"Why would you bring a naive old woman here? Will you take responsibility if my mom collapses?" He shouted and the guards, like they'd even care.
"Yongsik, I'll stay and do this. You go home." She said to her son.
"Stop it! I'm already here. I can't just leave." He said to her. They were both here.
"But you promised me. You promised never to gamble again! You idiot, it's the same thing." She said to him, he must've said something else to her.
"Be quiet! That's enough!" He shouted at her.
"Don't you dare." She said to him and I made my way back through the crowd to where Gihun was. We watched it all unfold.
"If you wish to participate in the games, please sign the player consent form. Those who do not wish to participate, please speak up now. We always give you a chance to leave the games." The manager said and that's when we all went to sign the form. That's when I saw a fight happening from the distance.
"I guess that guys made a lot of enemies. I wouldn't be surprised if there was more of them here." I said to Gihun and he looked at me.
"That'll be a group of people we avoid." He said to me and I would have to agree with him.
"Those who do not wish to participate please speak up now." The manager said and that's when Gihun signed the slip. It was my turn afterwards. I was staying. I think that was pretty obvious. That's when it was time for the pictures. Walking through those halls.
"The first game will begin momentarily. After having your picture taken, follow the staffs instructions and proceed to the game site." The PA said and that's when I had my picture taken. I wasn't going to smile this time. I was still angry. I then headed up the stairs. I'd been separated from Gihun. I was just walking up these hellish stairs in silent. When I made it up and the doors opened for the first game. I knew what this was. "Welcome to the first game. All players, please wait a moment on the field. Let me repeat. All players, please wait a moment on the field." The PA said and it was red light, green light.
"I wonder what this is?" The girl from earlier asked me. I knew but I couldn't say.
"I don't know, I guess we'll find out." I said to her and I was hoping we would. I looked up and saw the birds. We were outside. That's when the doors behind closed.
"The first game is Red Light, Green Light." The PA said and announced the game.
"Childrens games, why would we be playing that." She said to me and I looked at her.
"Because these people clearly things adults playing kids games are fun." I said to her and she didn't know the half of it.
"Cross the finish line without getting caught in five minutes. If you do, you pass." The PA said and I saw Gihun run pass.
"Everyone! Everyone, listen up! Pay attention! Listen carefully! This is not just a game! If you lose the game, you die!" Gihun shouted and I looked around. No one believed him. I knew the truth.
"Hey! What are you talking about? We're going to die playing Red Light, Green Light?" Eunju asked him and she was right. That's what was going to happen.
"Yes, that's right! I'd they catch you moving, they will kill you! They will shoot you from somewhere! Stay on your toes! If you get caught, you die! That doll's eyes are motion detectors! Stay on your toes!" Gihun shouted and the girl beside me was laughing. She wouldn't be soon.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Namdu asked, he was talking about the truth.
"I think he's trying to scare us so he can win the prize money." Someone else said but me and Gihun already had the prize money.
"Don't pull any tricks, asshole!" Namdu shouted at him.
"You have to believe me!" Gihun shouted and the doll turned around. This was it. "Do not be alarmed or panic! No matter what happens, do not panic and start running!" Gihun shouted and I knew the drill.
"Let the game begin." The PA said and the clock went on. 5 minutes.
"Red light, green light." The doll said and we all ran and stopped.
"Freeze!" Gihun shouted and the head spun around. The eye moving. "Well done! You just need to stay calm like this! We just have yo move and stop at the right time. Then we can all win! We can survive together!" Gihun shouted and the dolls head went around again.
"Green light, red light." The doll shouted again and we ran before stopping.
"Freeze! Don't move and stay still! Just relax! Speak with your mouth covered. It's dangerous." Gihun shouted and the doll repeated its phrase again. Making us do the same action. "Freeze!" Gihun shouted and the doll did its thing again like us. "Freeze! I said cover your mouth!" I heard Gihun shout and the same thing happened again. "Freeze!" Gihun shouted and so far, we were all here. That's when we did our thing again. "Freeze!" Gihun shouted.
"Green light, red light!" The doll repeated again.
"Freeze! Nobody move!" Gihun shouted again. I was glad he was here. That's when I heard someone screaming. They must've been moving as well. The gunshot was heard. This was it the panic would set in. "Nobody move! You must not move!" Gihun shouted at us all.
"Player 196, eliminated." The PA said to us all.
"Do not move!" Gihun shouted and that's when someone else screamed. Another gunshot. Soon a bunch of people started to run. All of them getting shot and killed. The girl I'd been talking to was one of them. I just stayed in place.
"Let me repeat! You can move forward while the tagged shouts, 'green light, red light.' If your movement is detected afterward, you will be eliminated." The PA said to us and we were still frozen in position.
"Green light, red light." The doll said and no one moved at all. We all waited in place. When she repeated it, again we all stayed still. It was only the third time when I started moving again. Just like Gihun. I had to get across the line.
"You will also die if you don't make it there in time! The doll is a motion detector! But it can't detect motion that's not visible to it! Get behind someone bigger than you! Like you're doing Follow the Leader! We're running out of time! We've got to move!" Gihun shouted and that's when the doll said it's phrase again. I ran into a place behind someone. Another gunshot, followed by a few more. When the next round started. I was so close to the end. Every round from then on, was just getting a taste of the end. That's when in the corner of my eye I saw a line fall down. When the best rounds occurred. I knew I needed a few more goes before I was there. Every round has more gun shots. "Let's go!" Gihun shouted and we all made a run for it. Once I was over. I'd never been happier. "You can do this! You're almost there!" Gihun shouted and there was another round. I looked around and saw Gihun had gone back out. There was a matter of seconds left. But they made it. I was glad. Until Namdu was shot and killed. Gihun has helped but it didn't work. That's when the roof went over again. When we made it back to the main room. Ebeeyine was silent over what they witnessed. I was sat alone, I couldn't draw attention to me. Especially since I was a plant in away. Our silence was disrupted by the sound of a buzzer and the pink men coming in.
"Congratulations for making it through the first game. Here are the results of the first game." The manager said and that's when the number started going down. "Out of 456 players, 91 players have been eliminated. Three hundred sixty-five players have completed the first game. Congratulations again for making it through the first game." The manager said to us and knowing that nearly one hundred people had gone was crazy.
"Sir! Please don't kill us! Please don't kill us. I beg you! As for my son's debt, I will do whatever it takes to pay you back! Please forgive us! Don't just stand there. Beg for his forgiveness." The mother said, clinging onto her son.
"I'm sorry. Please forgive me. I promise I'll pay it back!" Yongsik said to them. Both him and his mother on their knees.
"There seems to be a misunderstanding." The manager said to them.
"Please don't kill us!" Another man said but the begging wouldn't go anywhere.
"Please spare us!" Someone else shouted. That's when everyone started to beg.
"We are not trying to harm you. We are presenting you with an opportunity." The manager said to us and all they did was harm people.
"Clause three of the consent form. 'The games may be terminated upon a majority vote.' Correct?" Gihun asked and that would happen.
"That is correct." The manager said to us all.
"Then let us take a vote right now." Gihun said to them and I knew it would happen.
"Of course. We respect your right to freedom of choice. But first, let me announce the prize amount that's been accumulated." The manager said and the money went into the bank. Everyone was looking up at the pot. "The number of players eliminated in the first game is 91. Therefore, a total of 9.1 billion won has been accumulated. If you quit the games now, the 365 if you can equally divide the 9.1 billion won, and leave with your share." The manager said to us all.
"How much is that?" Jeongdae asked him. I wanted to know as well.
"Each person's share would be 24,931,500 won." The manager said and that was enough for some people.
"Twenty million? You said 45.6 billion!" The guy with the purple hair shouted. He'd have to be the only left for that.
"The rule is that a hundred million won will be accumulated for each eliminated player. If you choose to play the next game and more players get eliminated, the prize amount will increase accordingly." The manager said to us and maybe more people would want to play now.
"How much will it be if you survive until the end?" Jeongdae asked the manager.
"As I already told you, the total amount of prize money for all 456 players is 45.6 billion won. Those who make it through all six games will equally divide the 45.6 billion won." The manager said to us.
"So if you're the only one to survive, you get the 45.6 billion?" Someone asked him. And they would.
"That's correct." The manager said and that's when everyone started murmuring together.
"So we can take a vote again and decide to leave after the next game?" Another guy asked and that would happen.
"As promised in the consent form, you can take a vote after each game and decide to leave with the prize money accumulated up to that point. We always prioritize your voluntary participation. Now, let's begin the vote. If you wish to continue the games, press the O button. If you wish to end them, press the X button. The vote will be held in reverse order of you played numbers. Player 456." The manager said ans I scanned the crowd for Gihun. That's when I saw walking up to the buttons.
"It's all pointless! You didn't decide when to come into this world, and you can't decide when you leave it either. When and where you die were already decided by the gods the moment you were born. No matter how hard you try, you can never escape it." A woman shouted and I watched as Gihun pressed the X.
"Once you finish voting, put the patch you are given on the right side of you chest and stand on the side you have chosen. Player 454." The masked manager said and we all watched people vote. "Player 453." The manager said and the numbers kept going lower and lower. When it got to me, I pressed to continue the games. I couldn't bare to look at Gihun.
"Wait a minute, everyone! You can't do this. Come to your sense! Don't you see? These aren't just any games. We will all die if we keep playing! We have to get out of here now. With a majority vote, we can! We must stop here!" Gihun shouted at everyone.
"Who do you think you are? Why do you keep egging people on like that? You scared us by saying they'd shoot us before the game even began!" Jeongdae shouted at him, that's because we knew what was going to happen.
"That's right! He was going on about how we'd die, and I almost did because I got so nervous!" Someone shouted.
"How did you know they were going to shoot us? Are you one of them." Someone else shouted and he wasn't.
"Are you conning us all by pretending to be a player?" Jeongdae asked him and he went closer to Gihun. "Who is this guy? Did you plant him to mess with our heads?" Jeongdae shouted at the guards.
"That's uncalled for. We wouldn't have won the game and survived if it weren't for him! And you! I saw how scared you were. Your legs were shaking. You should thank him, not treat him like a fraud!" Someone else shouted at another.
"And who the hell are you? Are you conspiring with him?" He asked him back.
"Rude. How old are you?" The guy asked the younger one.
"Older than you. What are you going to do? What?" 225 asked him and that's when the elderly lady came over to them.
"Come on now. Please don't do this. Listen. None of us would be alive if it weren't for this gentleman. So enough with the greed. Let's put our lives first and get out of this place! Okay?" She shouted and I was glad that she was on Gihun's side.
"That's right." Jungbae said to us all.
"Let's all get out of here!" Someone else shouted and that's when everyone started shouting over each other.
"I have played these games before! I have done this before! So has 217! We knew about the first game because we had played it before! We played the games here three years ago! And everyone who was with us...died here!" Gihun shouted and I felt a few eyes on me.
"Hold on. If they all died, how did you both survive?" Someone asked him.
"Wait, are you saying you were joint winners?" 226 asked and I wanted to remain silent.
"That's right. We were the final winners." Gihun said to them all and that's when the murmurs began again. "If we continue the games, every single person here, just like all the people back then, will die in the end." Gihun said to them all.
"He's not lying as well, this room will just get bigger due to the amount of beds going. People will die, continuously." I said to them all speaking up.
"Bullshit. If you were both winners, it means you both won 22.8 billion won. If you really did, why would you come back here?" Jeongdae shouted. Because we wanted to stop this.
"That's right! They're lying! Cut the crap!" Someone else shouted. That's when the shouting started again.
"If you really won, it actually works better for us. You can give us some tips on how to beat these games." Thanos said to us, I'd heard his name get uttered around here.
"That's right! We have two previous winners with us, so what do we have to worry about? Come on, let's do this!" Jeongdae shouted and that's when everyone started shouting again. We were now pawns in their games.
"Please, I'm begging you. We have to get out now! If we keep playing, more people will die. That could be you. We have to stop this now and get out of here. Everyone." Gihun said and I saw someone in pink put a gun to his back.
"From here on, we will not tolerate actions that disrupt the voting process. Now, let's resume the vote." The manager said and the voting continued. The number for play continuing kept going up.
"Yongsik! Don't get any stupid ideas." His mother shouted and it was cure a joint score. 181 each side.
"Player 006." The manager said and she took a vote for leaving. "Player 004." He said and the guy went up. He voted to stay. "Lastly, player 001." He said and we all looked back.
"Everyone, say O!" Thanos shouted. That's when people started shouting either O or X. He then walked up to the podium. That's when we waited for his decision. He chose to stay. We had one more game. We could make it.
