1. Bread and Lottery

My phone rang again. So did Gihun's. "Where do you think you're going? You've got no place to go." The voice on the other end said and I looked around. Everyone was a normal person.

"Who are you, a coward. At least show yourself." I said to him as I looked around.

"You should have gotten on that plane. You will regret your decision." He said and we got outside of the airport.

"Give me a reason to. Just know, I will find you." I said to him and hung up. Gihun and I looked at each other before getting into a taxi.

"Where to?" The driver asked us and Gihun and I looked at each other. There was only one place to go.

"To Seoul, please." Gihun said to him, that's where all the recruiting would be.

"All right." The driver said and that was us gone. Once we were dropped off we went into a store.

"We need supplies." I said to him and we went to the stationary. A box cutter. We got one each. They must be tracking us. Especially since they knew we were at the airport. They must've put them in when we were unconscious. Gihun and I went separate ways into the bathrooms once in there I took my clothes off to check myself over. Once I found it, it was behind my ear. I knew what I had to do. I took the box cutter and sliced through the skin. That's when I got it out. I was in a lot of pain but at least it was out. The little black capsules that would say exactly where I was. Not anymore though.

2 years later

I hadn't left Seoul. For two years, I'd been trying to get another invite into the games. Two years. I hadn't talked to Gihun since that day at the airport. Thought it would better the chances. I had got an apartment in a new building but I was still on edge about everything. There was knocking at my door. Could this be what I was waiting for. When I opened it, it was one of my neighbors. "Haneul, I've got some Soju but no one to share it with." Jaehyun my neighbor said to me and I looked at him and nodded.

"Well, come in. We can share it together." I said to him and he came in. My apartment was bare, not much to it. Maybe because I knew that I'd be leaving it at some point.

"I'm surprised you still haven't decorated." He said to me and he stopped at the picture of me and Saebyeok.

"That's the only thing I need in here." I said to him and he looked at me.

"It's been years. Don't you think it's time?" He asked me and I looked at him and toothed my head.

"It might but I have something I need to do first." I said to him and he looked at me and nodded.

"You say that every time. But you never say what your doing." He said to me and we started on the Soju. As the days went by I was going to every street. Every park to see if I could find the guy with the Ddakji. But I never found him. I was hoping that Gihun's search was going a lot better than mine. I knew it was the day he came to my apartment.

"Haneul, get in. We found him." He said to me. I was just about to do my search.

"Where?" I asked him and I got in the car. He explained everything as we headed on our way. To the park I was going to today. I saw Gihun's phone going off as he was driving. Pictures of the recruiter. We were both in silence. The only thing breaking it was the wail of a siren.

"Plate number 2071, pull over. Plate number 2071, pull over now." The police PA said and I looked at him.

"As much as I want to catch this guy, we need to pull over." I said to him and he did. The police pulling in behind us. When the officer came to the window Gihun put it down.

"Sir, you were going over the speed limit. Can I see your license?" The officer asked and Gihun got it out in silence. As the officer checked the license Gihun's phone rang.

"I'll be there soon. I got it." He said to whoever it was and they hung.

"The fine for speeding is 60, 000 won. Make sure- -" The officer started and that's when Gihun took off.

"What was that about?" I asked him and he knew I meant the phone call.

"He's in a taxi. The people I work with are giving me updates." He said and I was hoping that we'd get to the location in time. This goose chase needed to come to an end. Once we got to the location we started looking around. "This way." He said as he looked at the map on his phone. We started following the tracker. But no one was here. He made a call, straight to voicemail.

"I'm not liking this." I said to him as we went down an alley. We found blood on some trash bags and then a knife. "Somethings happened here. Maybe this guy is someone we don't want to mess with." I said to him and he looked at me.

"Haneul, we have to. Especially if we want to stop these games from happening again." He said to me and I wanted that as well. But we barely made it out the first time and that was enough. Once it started to rain I looked at him.

"Gihun, it's not worth looking in this weather. We should wait for the rain to stop." I said to him and he looked at me. I was hoping that he would agree with me. That it was time to stop for the day. When Gihun dropped me off. He was here. The recruiter.

"It's been a long time, Miss. Son Haneul. You should've gotten on that plane that day." He said to me and I looked at him.

"We'll sometimes people from the past can change people minds." I said to him and he looked at the map that I had. All the parks crossed off that I'd gone to.

"It looks like you've been trying hard to find me." He said to me and I kept looking at him.

"Some people are just hard to find and all I wanted to do was shake your hand." I said to him and he sat down.

"Shake my hand?" He asked me and I nodded.

"For getting me into the game. That I won with Gihun and we both it out with a fortune. It would only be fair if I shook your hand." I said to him and pulled a chair up to sit opposite him.

"I'm just a messenger who delivers invitations." He said to me and I looked at him intrigued.

"Who gets you to deliver the invitations?" I asked him but I wasn't done yet. "Let's all have a meeting. I think I have some things to say to him as well." I said to him and I was done talking now.

"Give me the message, and I'll pass it along." He said to me and I shook my hand.

"We're not doing jog that way. I want to discuss with him. Not with you. I'd rather talk with person who watches these games. Not rely on the person that prays on people to pass a message along." I said to him and he looked at me.

"Miss. Son. How do you think I got to where I am now?" He asked me and I looked at him.

"I don't care for your life story. Let me talk with your leader." I said to him. I wanted to know how he even got in. Especially without no one seeing him.

"Hmm...I used to work in the games when I was younger. I removed and burned the bodies of countless people like you. 'These things aren't human.' 'They're just trash, utterly useless in this world.' I kept telling myself that and worked hard for a few years. Then they gave me a gun. It felt pretty good. Like my existence was acknowledged for the first time in my life. I don't know which year it was, but one day, I was about to shoot a man who had lost a game. Huh? The guy seemed familiar. Guess who it was. My dad. My dad was suddenly standing right in front of me. He was in tears, begging me desperately to spare his life. I shot him right in the middle of his forehead, and realized, 'ah.' 'I'm cut out for this job.'" He said to me and this guy was just a psycho. He had the gun pointed at me but I wasn't even scared.

"It doesn't matter if you shoot people in there or whether you trick them outside, that doesn't change a single thing. You have always been...nothing more than a pawn in their game." I said to him and he clocked the gun.

"Miss. Son. Do you think you're special because you won the game?" He asked me and I put my head to muzzle of the gun.

"A person like you, would never understand and never will understand, what I did to make it out of there alive. And how even getting out I still want to play the games." I said to him and the gun clicked. No bullet.

"Let's play a game." He said to me and he took the gun away. He then played some music on his phone. "Im sure you've seen this in the movies. It's called Russian Roulette. Usually, you place the bullet in the gun, spin the cylinder, and pull the trigger. And before the next round, you spin the cylinder again. It resets the odds back to 1 in 6. But I'd like to make this game a little more serious. Because you're special, Miss. Son." He said to me and I looked at him and crossed my arms.

"Get to the point." I said to him.

"We'll take turns pulling the trigger without spinning the cylinder again. The bullet will be fired within six attempts, and the game will be over. What do you say?" He asked me and I looked at him and nodded. He then put the gun on the table and spun it. It pointed at me. I picked it up and placed it to my temple. Pulling the trigger nothing. The recruiter than picked the gun up and pulled the trigger. Nothing. It was my turn again. "I've always wondered how you made it out of there alive. For one thing, you weren't even good at ddakji." He said to me and I pulled the trigger nothing. It was his turn again. He leaned forward and pointed it in my face before putting it in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Nothing. Two shots left. I put it to my head again. "What's the matter? Is your mind starting to face? Now your odd if death are 1 in 2. That's pretty high indeed. I'm sure you're afraid. Lots going through your mind. Let me guess what you're thinking right now. 'The gun is in my hand.' 'Screw the rules. Pull the trigger once or twice, and I can blow this guy's face off.' Isn't that right? If you want to meet the person you mentioned earlier, the key is in my pocket. You can simply shoot me with that gun and take it. But I'll have you admit one thing. That you're a piece of trash, just like everyone else. A piece of trash who got lucky and made it out of the dumpster." He said and he chuckled. I put the gun back to my head and pulled the trigger nothing. I wasn't scared of death anymore. I then handed the gun over to the recruiter.

"Whats the matter? Is your mind starting race?" I asked him, the same thing he asked me.

"That's right." He said to me and I looked at him.

"Screw the rules. Now, with a single pull of the trigger, you could kill me. But...I'll have you admit one thing. You put a mask over your face and do whatever your master says. You run, bark, and do tricks for them. You're nothing more than their dog and their pawn." I said to him and he gave me a smirk before he pulled the trigger on himself. Now I had a dead body in my apartment. I knew people would've heard that.
