The Pevensies Return

CHAPTER 3

(3rd Person POV)

Meanwhile, in the human world, the Pevensies are about to board a train to go to school. Lucy runs across the street almost being hit by a car.

"Mind yourself, love," The driver calls.

"I'm sorry," Lucy calls.

"Watch where you're going!" The driver says.

Susan is at a newspaper stand reading a magazine when she is approached by a boy.

"You go to Saint Finbar's?" The boy asks.

"That's right," Susan answers.

"I go to Hendon House. Across the road. I've seen you sitting by yourself," The boy explains.

"Yes, well, I prefer to be left alone," Susan says as she tries to go back to reading the paper so the boy would leave her alone.

"Me, too. What's your name?" The boy says.

"Phyllis," Susan lies.

"Susan!" Lucy calls shortly after. "You'd better come quickly." Susan sets the paper down and they take off across the street. They rush into the train station where there is a crowd chanting fight over and over again. Peter is fighting several guys at once. Edmund then runs past Susan and Lucy.

"Edmund!" Lucy calls. Edmund jumps into the fighting helping Peter. Soldiers then come in and break the fight up.

"Stop it. Break it up. That's enough. Come on. That's it. Get up. Act your age!" The soldiers say as the crowd runs. The Pevensies grab their things before walking over to a bench and sitting.

"You're welcome," Edmund says to Peter.

"I had it sorted," Peter states.

"What was it this time?" Susan asks as fights had become a frequent thing for Peter.

"He bumped me," Peter answers.

"So you hit him?" Susan asks.

"No. After he bumped me, they tried to make me apologize. That's when I hit him," Peter explains.

"Really? Is it that hard just to walk away?" Susan questions.

"I shouldn't have to. I mean, don't you ever get tired of being treated like a kid?" Peter says.

"We are kids," Edmund states.

"Well, I wasn't always. It's been a year. How long does he expect us to wait?" Peter says as he looks at the necklace around his neck, that held the ring he was going to propose to Athena with.

"I think it's time to accept that we live here. It's no use pretending any different," Susan explains before she sees the guy from earlier. "Oh, no. Pretend you're talking to me."

"We are talking to you," Edmund states.

"Ow!" Lucy says loudly as she stands up.

"Quiet, Lu," Susan says.

"Something pinched me!" Lucy explains.

"Hey, stop pulling!" Peter says to Edmund as he stands.

"Not touching you," Edmund says standing as well.

"Look, would all of you just... What is that?" Susan says as she stands. A train starts going by really fast.

"It feels like magic," Lucy says excitedly.

"Quick, everyone hold hands," Susan says as she grabs Lucy's and Peter's hands.

"I'm not holding your hand!" Edmund says to Peter.

"Just..." Peter says as he grabs Edmund's hand. The train station breaks apart before there is a bright light that the train disappears into. They let go of each other to walk out and find themselves in a cave by the beach. Lucy and Susan smile at each other before taking off towards the water.

"Shame you're not as quick as me, Ed!" Peter says he slightly shoves Edmund. They strip their blazers, socks, and shoes before playing in the water.

"Edmund. Ed? Ed!" They call as Edmund backs away from them, looking up at the top of the hill.

"What is it?" Susan asks as the others stop playing.

"Where do you suppose we are?" Edmund asks.

"Well, where do you think?" Peter asks.

"Well, I don't remember any ruins in Narnia," Edmund answers as they all look up. They all venture to the top after getting dressed.

"I wonder who lived here," Lucy says as she looks out at the water.

"I think we did," Susan says as she picks up a golden chess piece.

"Hey, that's mine. From my chess set," Edmund says as he and Peter join them.

"Which chess set?" Peter asks.

"I didn't exactly have a solid gold chess set in Finchley, did I?" Edmund asks sarcastically.

"Can't be," Lucy says as she sees where the throne room would have been. She takes off and the others follow her. "Don't you see?"

"What?" Peter asks.

"Imagine walls. And columns, there," Lucy describes as she places them in the order of the thrones, leaving the middle empty. "And a glass roof."

"Cair Paravel," Peter states. They walk around and Edmund takes notice of the big rocks lying around.

"Catapults," Edmund states.

"What?" Peter asks.

"This didn't just happen. Cair Paravel was attacked," Edmund explains while Susan and Lucy share a worried look. Peter and Edmund then walk over to a secret entryway and push the first door open. Peter then busts down the second door. Peter then cuts the bottom of his shirt before tying it around a stick.

"Don't suppose you have any matches, do you?" Peter asks Edmund since he still had his school bag.

"No, but..." Edmund says as he reaches into his bag. "...would this help?" Edmund pulls out a flashlight.

"You might have mentioned that a bit sooner," Peter says jokingly. Edmund then leads the way down using the flashlight. They find the room where their statues, trunks, and riches were kept.

"I can't believe it. It's all still here," Peter says. Everyone but Peter goes and opens their trunks.

"I was so tall," Lucy states as she pulls out one of her old dresses.

"Well, you were older then," Susan says.

"As opposed to hundreds of years later... when you're younger," Edmund states as they turn to see him with his helmet on but it was way too big for his head. Peter picks up a golden shield and blows the dust off of it to reveal Aslan's face. Peter then looks towards his statue and trunk. He can't help but notice Athena's statue beside it as well.

"What is it?" Lucy asks Susan.

"My horn. I must've left it on my saddle the day we went back," Susan answers. Peter then walks to his trunk and opens it. He pulls out his sword before unsheathing it.

"When Aslan bares his teeth, winter meets its death," Peter recites.

"When he shakes his mane we shall have spring again," Lucy finishes. "Everyone we knew, Mr. Tumnus and the Beavers, even Athena ...they're all gone."

"I think it's time we found out what's going on," Peter says as they all look at each other. After changing Peter walks over to Athena's trunk and opens it. He finds only her crown and some clothes. Her weapons and even the bracelet Aslan gave her were gone. That gave Peter a little bit of hope that she was alive. All he knew is that he needed to know the truth. The Pevensies start traveling along the shore to where the river meets the ocean. Susan comes over a little hill to see to soldiers holding a dwarf, that is tied up.

"Drop him!" Susan orders after she got their attention by shooting an arrow into the side of the boat. Trumpkin starts mumbling into the gag and shaking his head. The soldiers drop him into the water and Susan shoots the soldier that picks up a crossbow. The other soldier then jumps into the water. Edmund and Peter shed their swords before jumping into the water. Peter saves Trumpkin while Edmund gets the boat. Lucy uses her dagger and cuts the rope around Trumpkin's hands. Trumpkin then pulls the gag off and spits out water before standing up.

"'Drop him!'" Trumpkin mimics Susan. "That's the best you can come up with?" The Pevensies all share confused looks.

"A simple 'thank you' would suffice," Susan states.

"They were doing fine drowning me without your help," Trumpkin says.

"Maybe we should have let them," Peter states.

"Why were they trying to kill you, anyway?" Lucy asks.

"They're Telmarines. That's what they do," Trumpkin answers.

"Telmarines? In Narnia?" Edmund asks because when they left they were at peace with everyone.

"Where have you been for the last few hundred years?" Trumpkin asks.

"It's a bit of a long story," Lucy answers. Susan then hands Peter back his sword and Trumpkin sees the handle.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me. You're it? You're the kings and queens of old?" Trumpkin asks.

"High King Peter, the Magnificent," Peter introduces himself.

"You probably could've left off the last bit," Susan says.

"Probably," Trumpkin agrees with a chuckle.

"You might be surprised," Peter says as he holds his sword out in front of him.

"You don't want to do that, boy," Trumpkin threatens.

"Not me. Him," Peter says as he hands Trumpkin his sword and looks at Edmund who unsheathes his own sword. When Trumpkin grabs the sword, he lets it drop to the ground as if it were heavy before grabbing it with both hands. Edmund shares a look with the others. Trumpkin then swings the sword knocking Edmund's out of his way before hitting Edmund in the face with the hilt of the sword.

"Edmund!" Lucy calls out.

"You all right?" Trumpkin asks sarcastically. Trumpkin then swings again but Edmund dodges and gets behind Trumpkin before hitting Trumpkin in the butt with the flat of his sword making the others laugh. Trumpkin swings again and Edmund ducks. Again Trumpkin swings and Edmund jumps over it. Edmund then makes some quick attacks before knocking the sword out of Trumpkin's hand. Trumpkin's jaw drops in shock, especially seeing as Athena had helped train him.

"Beards and bedsteads!" Trumpkin says as he sits down in shock. "Maybe that horn worked after all."

"What horn?" Susan asks.
