Chapter Fourteen: Not a Sith. Not a Jedi
BEN
"Sir, the codes aren't working," the tactical officer said to Pryde.
Ben crossed his arms and took a step toward the small BB-Unit in front of him. He'd learned its name was BB-9E. The droid was the fail-safe for security. And it responded to Ben, thanks to whoever had forgotten to revoke his security privileges after he'd died.
Pryde snarled at the tactical officer. "What do you mean, the codes aren't working? We just entered them."
"They've been reset, sir."
"By whom?"
There was a pause as the tactical officer checked his console. His words were less confident this time. "Reset by... Kylo Ren."
The other officers turned to look at him. Pryde didn't respond, but walked over to the man and looked down at his console over his shoulder.
"Then reset the codes again," he said calmly.
"Yes, Sir." The man took a moment to reset the codes. He stopped suddenly and lifted his chin, keeping his gaze away from Pryde as he spoke. "The Code Reset is locked, Sir."
BB-9E beeped and Pryde turned abruptly in its direction. For a second, Ben felt as though he was turning to face him, not the robot.
"What did it say?" Pryde yelled.
"All admin access to this ship is now through Kylo Ren," someone replied.
"Kylo Ren is dead!" Pryde shouted, his face turning red. He then pointed at the droid. "Where are you getting your commands from? Where is Kylo Ren?"
Ben crossed his arms, a smile playing on his lips. He could do this all day long; watching Pryde loose his composure. It was entertaining.
"He says Kylo Ren is in this room," the tactical officer replied. It seemed funny to Ben that learning to understand droidspeak was a requirement for all officers and yet Pryde had never taken the time to. The rigid man narrowed his eyes and scanned the room.
"How does the robot... detect him?" Pryde asked.
Ben frowned. The man was smart.
The tactical officer translated BB-9E's response. "Frequency wavelengths. One thousand and fifteen MegaHertZ."
"Stop," Ben said to BB-9E. "Stop responding to Pryde!"
"Show all frequency wavelengths in that range as a holographic image," Pryde said.
Ben took a step back. The smirk on Pryde's face told him that he could now see him, in some outline or form at least.
"Back from the dead, are we?" Pryde said. "Don't you Sith ever die?"
"I'm not a Sith," Ben replied.
Pryde squinted his eyes at him. "He's speaking. What is he saying?"
The tactical officer asked BB-9E to repeat everything Ben said.
"He said, he's not a Sith."
Pryde began to pace the room, hands behind his back. "Not dead..." he mumbled. "Lieutenant Anderson, scramble all the frequency wavelengths between one thousand and two thousand MegaHertZ in the Command Room right now."
The droid turned its head to Ben and then rolled back to Pryde.
"Ask Kylo Ren how he's feeling now," Pryde said to the droid.
"The droid says he can't take orders from you anymore," Lieutenant Anderson said, but Pryde didn't seem affected.
"Then ask the droid yourself, if it can still see Kylo Ren."
Ben looked down at his hands. He could still see them, the same as he could before, and he didn't feel any different. The frequencies he gave off apparently weren't what he was made out of, just what he emitted.
"The droid says he can no longer see or hear Kylo Ren."
"Excellent." Pryde stopped pacing. "Reset Security codes."
ROSE
Rose showed up just in time to witness the most embarrassing interaction between Finn and Rey.
The storm had passed sometime in the night and the sand was now hard with rain. The suns had yet to come up and the land smelled fresh as Rose walked to Rey's cabin.
Finn had taken off in a hurry, saying something about Rey's place being destroyed, but it looked just fine at the moment, unharmed by the storm and sitting silently in the dark blue haze of dawn.
Jakku almost seemed tolerable after a good rain. There was no dust or heat and the air was crisp and clean. The front door of the cabin was open when Rose arrived and she heard Finn say, "I'm just going to come out and say it. I'm Force Sensitive."
He had his back to Rose and she couldn't see his expression, but she could tell by the tone of his voice that he was being serious. She could also tell that Rey, who was facing forward, had a look of pity on her face.
"We all are connected in the Force," Rey said to Finn.
"That's not what I'm saying!" Finn continued.
Rose stepped further into the candlelit room and Finn stopped talking when he saw her. Rose then noticed that the boy was there awake and standing in the room. He looked a bit ill, but overall seemed fine.
"His name is Temiri," Rey beamed, noticing Rose's gaze. She set a hand on the kid's shoulder and ushered him over to Rose.
"We need to leave," Finn said, sounding desperate. "Right now!"
"I've seen you before," Rose got down on one knee and got a better look at the boy. She hadn't noticed when the boy was frozen and looking half dead, but now that he was walking around she recognized him. It was the boy from Cantonica, the one who had helped her and Finn escape the Canto Bight Police by setting the Fathiers free. "You're the boy from Cantonica."
"You know this boy?" Rey asked.
Finn seemed to notice the boy for the first time too. "How did you get here?" he asked.
"I don't know," the boy answered.
"My ring!" Rose took the boy's hand gently. "You kept it safe."
"This is fascinating," Rey said. "Is there some reason you've seen Temiri before, and now he's here?"
"I had a Force vision!" Finn said suddenly. He had his hands out, dramatically communicating with his hands. "I saw that this place blown up."
"Is Force Vision even a thing?" Rose asked.
"I don't know," Rey responded. The pity look had returned to her face again. "At least not with being able to predict the future. I've never had future predictions, but I've had visions that connected me to other Force sensitive..." Rey trailed off and looked down at her feet.
"But I did!" Finn insisted. "I do see the future. It's my Force ability..." he trailed off suddenly, as though he was finally realizing that Rey didn't believe him. Rose sure didn't. Finn being Force Sensitive was like saying Poe was a Sith Lord.
"You don't believe me, do you?" Finn looked angry now, but Rose knew him well enough to see that he was more hurt than angry.
"I do!" Rey said quickly. "I believe that you.. .saw something."
Finn blushed, either with embarrassment or anger, Rose couldn't tell.
A breeze blew into the cabin, extinguishing the the candles in the room and making it dark, with only the dim light of dawn coming in from the round windows.
The boy coughed. His lungs sounded wheezy and Rey immediately went to put her arm around him. "I'll get you blanket," she said.
"Maybe we should fly him to a human doctor soon," Rose said, glancing at Finn. She hated how dejected he looked. Perhaps getting them all out of Rey's cabin would make him feel better, since he truly seemed to believe he had the ability to have Force Visions, and that this place would be blown up.
"Yes, let's do that," Rey agreed. "We can go now," she glanced at Finn, as though thinking the same thing as Rose was, then got a small blanket from the cot. She set it on the boy's shoulders and they headed out into the early morning dawn.
