Chapter Eight: His Greatest Mistake
Alfred's now cold, unforgiving eyes snapped away from Alastair and towards the crying form that was Antonio. The Spaniard was gripping Francis' shirt tightly tears streaming down his face. It was clear that after a few years to think about what he had done, Antonio felt remorse. It seemed like they all did but Alfred didn't care about that right now.
No, all he cared about was the fact that Antonio had had feelings for him during the entire time Alfred thought he had hated him. It also seems like those feelings are still present in Antonio's life so that's...something. Alfred growled before stomping towards Antonio and turning the Spanish man around so that he was facing him and not Francis.
Angry sky blue eyes met glistening emerald green eyes as the two made eye contact. "A..Alfred.." Antonio stuttered looking at the American with so much regret and remorse in his eyes that it tugged a little at Alfred's heartstrings. He shook his head trying to rid himself of these unwanted thoughts. Alfred didn't feel sorry for Antonio because Antonio caused him and his friends so much suffering.
So why did he still feel an unfamiliar tug at his chest?
"I'm sorry! Por favor perdoname, mi amor...." Antonio babbled arms flying around the American to pull him closer to him. Alfred frowned a feeling of sadness crossing over him. For the briefest of moments, he felt sad almost pity for Antonio. But then he remembered. He remembered why he hated Antonio in the first place.
It had been a tough day for Alfred. His father hadn't given him any food to eat claiming he wouldn't feed 'a disappointment to God' so Alfred was really hungry. And on top of that, Gilbert and Matthias thought it would be funny to dump a bucket of water on his head so Alfred was also soaked head to toe.
Alfred had been wondering the halls of the school aimlessly deciding not to go to class. All the teachers kept telling him he was stupid anything so what's the point? Alfred had been so lost in his thoughts that he hadn't been paying attention to where he was going and ended up smacking right into a hard chest.
"Watch where you're going, loser!" A familiar accented voice hissed causing Alfred to squeak before looking up to greet the solid emerald that was Antonio's eyes. "S..Sorry.." Alfred meekly apologized head down as he tried to get past Antonio. The Spaniard, on the other hand, seemed to have different plans. Large hands grabbed Alfred's petite shoulders gripping tightly before slamming him into a row of nearby lockers.
Alfred yelled at this squirming while Antonio held him up against the lockers. An unreadable expression crossed Antonio's face as he stared down at Alfred with emotionless eyes. The American could feel a shiver run down his spine at having that gaze directed at him. Everyone in his school was always so scary.
"You should watch where you're going. You could seriously hurt someone. Someone whose actually important to people unlike you." Antonio mockingly scolded Alfred who didn't respond. After a moment a silence, Alfred finally spoke voice trembling. "W..Why can't you all just leave me alone?" Alfred was shaking. Antonio could feel it underneath his hands that were still holding onto the American's shoulders.
A crushing feeling formed in the Spanish teen's chest. He loves Alfred. He really and truly does but it wasn't meant to be. Not in this town and not right now. Maybe sometime in the future when things would be different.
But for now....
"You're pathetic. You can't spend a minute around me without trembling in fear. Is that it? Do I scare you, Alfred? Are you scared of my friends?" When Alfred didn't reply, Antonio shook him roughly. "Do we scare you?" Antonio repeated this time earning a frantic nod from the blonde teen. "Yes, ok?! You all scare me so much. I can't walk around town without looking over my shoulder worrying that one of you's gonna jump me!" Alfred suddenly shouted at him causing Antonio to recoil in surprise.
Tears streamed down Alfred's face as he looked at the Spaniard with sad eyes. Eyes that said 'how could you do this to me?' and 'I thought you loved me'. Antonio unknowingly began to lean down so he was eye level with Alfred. Blue eyes clashed with green. Alfred didn't what was going on in Antonio's mind but that look he had on his face scared him a little.
Then Antonio whispered something only Alfred could hear. "You should just kill yourself. The world would be a better place without you." Antonio whispered releasing his grip on Alfred's shoulders. He gave the American one last burning look before he walked away from Alfred. Alfred was left there trembling and confused until Gal found him.
The memory made Alfred feel sad. If Antonio did have feelings for him, then why did he hurt him? You don't hurt the ones you love. You hurt the ones you hate. "I hate you." Alfred muttered causing Antonio to stop crying for a second to look at the American in shock. "What?" Was all he could say. "I hate you, Antonio. How can you say that you love me when all you've ever done was hate on me?" Alfred voice held a neutral tone but if you looked into his eyes then you would clearly see the sadness and acute rage in those blue orbs.
"I do love you, I swear it! It's just...complicated. Or at least it was complicated back in high school. Now I..I can.." Antonio didn't seem to know what exactly he wanted to do. While it was true that he and Alfred were no longer in high school and neither of them lived in Hetalia, there was absolutely no guarantee that Alfred would even want to be near him let alone be with him. "Can what?" Alfred said quirking an eyebrow at Antonio.
Antonio watched Alfred's mouth move and a sudden yet stupid idea came to mind. He once again abruptly slammed his lips against Alfred's. This time was different though. Unlike last time, this wasn't a gentle kiss. It was rough and full of passion. Passion that Antonio had kept locked away from the world for so long that it just bursted. Just as quickly as the kiss began, it was ended when someone pulled Alfred away from the Spaniard's grip.
"Hey! What's the-" Antonio stopped his complaint half way through when he made eye contact with furious olive colored eyes. Hercules glared at him with a fierce protectiveness that Antonio had never seen before.
"Just what do you think you're doing?"
