Chapter 29

Poppy's PoV

Calum asked me to run to the shop to grab a few random things because he wanted to surprise me with a stay-at-home indoor lunch date. It sounds stupid but that was exactly the kind of thing I needed right now. With a newfound excitement, I buzzed into the shop and grabbed the things he had asked for; a share bag of crisps, some apple juice and ice cream of my choice. I hesitated as I looked over the many flavours of ice cream, reading in detail what they had in them before I opted for one that had marshmallow and chocolate in it. With a smile on my face, I headed to the cashier who began the spiel she had to say to every customer before her eyes finally took in who I really was.

"Hi welcome to- holy crap. It's you, I mean, you're her, I mean you're Poppy!" Her face seemed to light up in an instant and I offered her a soft smile in return.

"Hey there." I quickly looked down at her badge. "Bridget, how are you today?" She seemed to suck in a sharp breath, her eyes wide in shock that I had even spoken to her. Her hands began to shake as she continued to smile in my direction.

"Y-yeah great thank you! How are you? I mean, I'm sorry it must be pretty crap right now but it'll get better! It's a shame you can't choose your family." She rambled, seeming to confuse me. Had I missed something about my family making it to the news? My eyes scanned the magazine rack in front of her and I saw a photo of me on the front page of one of them. Without reading, I picked it up and added it to my shopping.

"Honestly, I'm good thank you." I tried to play it up, she may feed to people how strong I seemed and maybe I'd get some good press online for this - whatever my idiot parents had done would be long forgotten. "I've not got long before this baby arrives and cal is helping me decorate the nursery, so we're all good!" Bridget nodded in contentment as she scanned my items, quickly bagging them up for me as I paid.

"Thank you Poppy. You're so nice." She beamed as I grabbed my bag.

"And you're an asset to this place, but make sure you follow your dreams." I said as i waved, heading back to the car. I threw the shopping bag on the passenger seat as I pulled the magazine out, finally taking in the title.

My photo was plastered all over the place, getting a double paged spread in the middle of the magazine which showed the awful photos of me being beaten by Kyle, alongside Calum cheating with Naomi and a snapshot of my cancer diagnosis. Suddenly, my throat tightened as I bit back the tears.
Was this why Calum was being so nice to me? Did he know about this?

I whizzed home, practically barging the door down as I flung the magazine onto the table in front of Calum with fresh tears streaming down my face.

"Is this why you sent me out?" I asked instantly, not even bothering with a hello. Calum sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. I knew I hand my answer right then and there. He did know.

"That's what Luke called me about yesterday. I hadn't read anything, he said I didn't need to worry you because management were looking into it." I wasn't mad at him, in fact I was happy he told me the truth straight away, but a warning would have been nice.

"I found out from the cashier at the shop. She asked me how I was doing and said I couldn't choose family." My shoulders sunk as I sighed. "Look, I know we have a lot going on - when don't we? But I need to know these things. Please." Calum stood up instantly and hugged me.

"Of course baby, I'm sorry. I didn't think about the shop or the staff. I thought sending you out to get those things would be a distraction while I sorted something out." He spoke softly into my hair, making my body shiver at the close contact. The baby let out a kick of approval at our easy way of fixing this. We both let out a small laugh as we stroked my bump.

"Did you sort out what you needed to?" I asked carefully.

"As a matter of fact, I did." Calum beamed, just as the doorbell went. "I think that's for you." I hesitated for a second before I rushed over to the door, opening it to see all our friends there with bags of food.

"Movie niiiiiight!!" Michael called as he barged in first, practically ripping the bags open to set out the food. The girls rushed in and hugged me first, before helping to set up. I turned round, ecstatic at the small gesture that would mean so much to me. Just like my baby shower, although less sad. With just over 50 days to go until our baby was going to be here and our lives would change forever, it was only fair that we really enjoyed every moment now. I set out some plates on a table in front of the TV and Luke began to fiddle about with the remote to find a good film.

"Oh my god please can we watch PS I Love You?" Crystal said, hands clasped together.

"Absolutely not!" Michael tutted. "I vote for Fast and Furious."

"No way! How about Bridget Jones's Diary?" Sierra asked, receiving a glare from Luke.

"Nope. Not again." He said sharply. "Paranormal activity?"

"Hell no." Ashton added. "Mirrors?"

"How about we let Poppy choose?" Calum added from the kitchen where he opened four beers. Everyone's eyes were suddenly on me and I felt my cheeks heat up.

"Well, in that case, it has to be my favourite of all time. Jason Statham here we come, The Transporter please."

As the film I'd watched at least one hundred times played for us all, we tucked into the snacks and all cuddled together. It was a moment I knew I'd cherish forever, and made sure to look round at every single person's face. I sat and played with my hair, knowing soon it wouldn't feel like this. My heart began to get heavy as I once again thought about the impending treatment. It really would come around fast and this time, I had to hope that I could beat it. Balancing that and being a mum was going to be hard but at least I knew I had all these people beside me, helping me fight through it all.
