Chapter 23
Poppy's PoV
It was so nice to see Calum like normal, being stupid with his friends as they chatted about random things and kept each other in high spirits. For this car journey, it felt like nothing was wrong; like there was no bad news trying to weigh us down. Calum's eyes had creased up in the corners as he laughed, throwing his head back as he smacked Michael in the arm for something he'd said. Luke and Ashton were near on crying with laughter, leaning on each other for support. I sat back, staying out of the moment to enjoy it in its entirety. To see these four men really enjoy life and everything it had offered them, it made me smile.
The car pulled up and the five of us jumped out, pumped for the rest of the day. After our breakfast, Cal and I had felt particularly joyful and knew this would last so long as this interview didn't go down like the last one with Drew.
"Morning!" A receptionist greeted us all and gave us passes to put round our necks. She showed us into a large room with two presenters and the guys sat down and put their headsets on, testing the microphones whilst a song played for the audience. "Would anyone like a drink?"
"I really wouldn't say no to a coffee, if that's okay?" Luke asked carefully but the receptionist nodded happily.
"Me too." "And me." "Yup." The others spoke at the same time. The receptionist began to look a little confused.
"4 coffees please, all with milk and no sugar." I summarised for her and she mouthed a thank you as she left the room, the interview about to begin. The presenters quickly introduced themselves and did some small talk with the guys whilst I sat in the corner and eyed the rooms decor. They had a medical pack hung on the wall, next to that a signed picture of who I believed to be The Cure. There were smaller pictures dotted around of different bands from different eras, with the presenters of that time smiling proudly with them.
"Wasn't that an amazing song?" The first guy, Rod, spoke into his mic with so much energy.
"Absolutely!" His co-presenter Lucy added, tucking her shoulder length black hair behind her ear. "Now we have an even better treat lined up for our listeners. We have here in the studio, 5 Seconds of Summer!" The guys all said hellos into their mics and shuffled to get comfortable.
"Now, how are you all?" Rod asked.
"Tired." Michael laughed.
"Exhausted." Luke joked, receiving a glare from Michael.
"Feeling really good actually, thanks Rod." Ashton added, being the sensible one who was polite.
"Amazing! Now, you've got a new song that's going to be released and a new album nearly ready for your fans to enjoy. What would you say to our listeners who maybe haven't heard your songs before? How would you describe this album?" Lucy asked, lacing her fingers as she questioned them.
"Well, it's actually a far cry from what our other stuff sounded like." Calum laughed, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "If you've listened to songs from our first two albums, it's absolutely nothing like that. We took some time off, really focussed on developing our sound and trialling things we wanted to. When Youngblood came out it was so different to our usual stuff. CALM is another step in that direction." As Calum finished speaking, the receptionist bought in the tray of hot drinks and placed it in front of the band, sneaking off without making too much noise with a polite smile.
"Yeah we are really looking forward to hearing what our fans new and old think of this change." Michael said as he reached for a mug, grabbing one swiftly but knocking another over in the process. The mug of boiling coffee spilled straight onto Ashton who shot out of his chair and yanked the headphones away as he muttered swear words to himself. "Sorry!"
Ashton's wide eyes landed on me as he clutched his hand. I jumped up and grabbed Ashton, running him out of the room and towards the receptionist.
"I need your kitchen. Now." I ordered and they pointed me in the right direction. I rushed Ashton into the kitchen and threw on the tap, shoving his hands under the running lukewarm water.
"Ah fuck." Ashton muttered as he kicked his leg about trying to take his mind off the pain. He kept trying to pull it away but I refused, putting all my strength behind holding his hand under the water.
"Twenty minutes, Ash." I reiterated once more as I yanked his hand further under the water as he let out another yell of pain.
"This sucks." He sighed as he finally gave in and let me hold it there. The minutes rolled by and finally it was time for me to look at it. "I don't want to take it from the water." Ashton grumbled whilst I try to move his hand away.
"Alright fine." I said. "I'll check from here." This was harder than imagined though, with Ashton's towering frame making my line of sight hard. I had tried looking round him but the lighting hitting the water had made it hard so I moved him to one side and stood in front of the sink, grabbing his hand in mine as i manipulated it to see what the damage was. It did look quite bad, but not enough to need the hospital.
"It's okay. If they have cling film we can wrap it up, it'll be sore but no hospital trips are needed." I grinned, feeling proud of yet another good day's work. Ashton beamed, picking me up with his good hand and hugging me as I let out a scream from the unexpected affection. "Ashton! Put me down." I laughed as he lowered me to the floor, both of us noticing a shadowed figure at the door. Turning to face them, we were greeted with a very angry and hurt Bex.
"Ashton, a word please. In private."
