Chapter 1
Poppy's PoV
It still didn't feel real. None of it did.
I sat on the sofa of our house in London and looked down at my growing stomach, small kicks feeling like flutters every now and again. I smiled softly as I caressed my tummy. Then I looked up at Calum, standing over by the kitchen doing a video call with his family to tell them all about our honeymoon which we'd got back from just last night. He let out a goofy laugh as he rubbed his hand over his hair, ruffling it up a bit. He stood in a baggy thin dark jumper and some dark jeans, keeping it comfortable as we lounged around for the first time since we'd got back. I smiled over, almost euphoric as i came to terms with my new life. My old life, the one of shift work and nursing without much of a social life had changed dramatically and here I was now with a celebrity as a husband, a well known band as my friends and a little baby growing inside me. Life had changed so much and yet, the stuff deep down in the core, it hadn't changed.
The door was knocked on loudly and Calum stopped his conversation to throw me a glance.
"Expecting anyone Babe?" He asked, his eyebrows furrowing as my lips dropped into a small frown.
"No." I said hesitantly as I shook my head, slowly getting to my feet and heading towards the door. Both of us were silent, even Calum's family had gone quiet as we waited to see who would have been knocking. With one final glance over to Cal, which he replied with a smile, I opened the door and instantly took a step back, sucking in a sharp breath as I gasped. Cal was quick to dash towards me, his family and the phone long forgotten about as he threw it on the table. He stopped dead beside me, his arm instantly wrapping around my shoulders as he took in the two older people at the door. A female, short and slim, with bobbed hair that was greying around the edges. Fine lines were wrinkling the skin around her forehead and eyes. A male, over six foot and muscular, his salt and pepper hair short and side parted. They looked at me, taking me in for the first time in what would have been at least seven years. Oh how I must have changed. How did they feel? Like they'd missed out or did they not care?
There they were, now in front of me, half smiles plastered on as if they were greeting their neighbours for the first time since they'd moved in. We were strangers to them.
"Poppy, you look-" my mum began to gush but I knew it was fake. It always had been throughout my life.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I barked, surprising Calum who shot me a glare to tell me to be nice. Oh cal, if only you knew.
"It's nice to meet you." My dad lied to Calum. A lie because I knew they didn't care about anything I did. They wouldn't have cared if I'd have married Donald Trump or Brad Pitt. Nothing I did was ever good enough for them to care about. I sighed heavily, gesturing towards the parents who I'd been so content without. Why had they shown up on my doorstep? How did they even know where I lived? Why now?
"Calum, this is Kat." I pointed to my mum. "And this is Gary." I gestured to my dad. "M-my parents." The word felt sickening coming out of my mouth. Calum's eyes widened as his face contorted with a mixture of confusion, anger, frustration, happiness. What was he thinking? Was he now wondering why I hardly ever mentioned them? "Mum, Dad, this is Calum. My husband."
