Epilogue: Conscious

Hayley's POV

{4 Months Earlier...}

My body was still. I would have considered myself dead, but that wouldn't be true. I could hear everything around me. I could feel the sheets under me.

Footsteps entered the room, stopping suddenly with a sigh. A familiar sigh. Taylor's sigh.

"Hey," he said. I wanted to answer, but I couldn't. I wanted to see his face. Imagining it would never be enough. "You didn't have to do this, y'know?" he said. "Die, I mean."

But I'm not dead, I wanted to say. I wasn't dead, I knew it.

"If you weren't happy, you could've just told me," he said, his voice closer. I felt his hand hold mine; his thumb began to rub the back of my hand in small circular motions. "I swear I would've done everything in my power to fix it."

My heart shattered in bits at the sound of Taylor's voice breaking. I felt his soft lips on my hand. "Hayley, I love you. I love you more than life, itself. Why did you have to leave like this?"

I thought it was only for the best, I wanted to say. I thought it would only help you more than anything.

I heard Taylor stand from a chair. He planted a kiss on my forehead, some tears of his falling onto me.

"I love you," he whispered before pulling away. "I hope you're happy, wherever you are."

I'm not, I thought to myself. I'm happy with you, Taylor. I noticed it at the last minute.

Without anymore words, Taylor walked away. His footsteps faded away from the room. There was a sudden, short beep. My heart was trying to beat again. Inside, I was smiling.

This heart beats for you, Taylor, I wanted to say. It beats for only you.
