Chapter 31: Method or madness?

"Though this be madness, yet there is method in't. There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so."

"Well, well, well, see who is awake! The Slut is who!" a voice penetrated his reminiscing, followed by cackling laughter. Rain didn't say anything. Lhong had no idea what was coming for him, so Rain knew he had to just hold on to his temper as long as he could. 'God, I should ask Dad V to let me join them. Mafia possibilities endless,' he grinned to himself. "Too scared to talk?" Lhong hit him across his face. But Rain still didn't say a word. Suddenly Lhong spoke to someone behind him. "Bring him to the main room," he said in what he thought was a commanding tone. Rain wanted to laugh out loud. No wonder he and his father could never get a one up on the Theerpanayakuls.

Theerpanayakul resort, Chiang Mai, the night before –

"Me," Rain said. "No way in hell is that going to happen," Type said at the same time Pete said, "No chance, never!" Everyone started speaking at the same time. Rain calmly waited till everyone stopped speaking. "Are you all done?" he asked. "Now I request you to listen to me. I know that the necklaces that Dad V and Papa K gave us, contain trackers," he began, making everyone look at each other in surprise. "If we continue to live like this, in fear of P'Tawan and P'Lhong, we will never be able to live at all. P'Tawan tried his best to break your generation of the family, but he couldn't. So he decided to ensure that his son would continue his legacy. I don't know if P'Amy was part of the plan, but two things are for sure. One, she was aware of who P'Phayu was , and two, they didn't plan on her getting sick and dying," Rain said.

"So if we want to end this, they need to take me. If they are targeting P'Phayu, that means it's about Dad V, and therefore I will be an indirect target as long as I am with P'Phayu. So if we want to end this once and for all, I need to knowingly walk into their trap. They will use me as leverage, and that's how you will take them out, once and for all," Rain said. Everyone looked at each other. They could not believe it. Phayu had chosen a partner who was worthy of their family. And Rain's age made no difference, because he was seriously very intelligent. "So what do you want to do?" Kinn asked. "And what do you want us to do?" Sky asked. Rain laid out his plan. They considered every in and out, every loophole, and with the help of P'Singto, another trusted bodyguard, who closely worked with P'Arm in the cyber security area for the Theerpanayakuls, a solid and rather clever scheme was hatched.

Chiang Mai Gate Market, the next afternoon –

Phayu had still not returned, and in a way Rain was happy with these turn of events, knowing clearly that he would have never allowed Rain to take any unnecessary risk. But Rain was now fighting for his future, and he intended to emerge victorious, no matter what he had to go through. After knowing that Phayu was the one who had saved him from the kidnapping, he had also remembered the sensation of that long ago made promise, how he had felt his soul binding itself to that Phi's. it had been such a strange sensation, but now he understood what the monk had meant when he had said that his soul was tied to the one he was about to lose. Everything just made so much sense.

The gang of friends walked around the market, laughing and joking. Not a single expression of theirs gave away the fact that they were all participating in an elaborate plan that could not backfire, because their best friend's safety was at stake. They walked around and suddenly Rain said that he wanted to use the bathroom. Yihwa said that she would go with him, as she needed to use the restrooms as well. All of them locked eyes with each other and nodded. The two of them went off, talking and then split in front of the public facilities. Yihwa came out 5 minutes later and waited for Rain. 'What's taking him so long?' she wondered. After waiting for almost 10 minutes, Yihwa called up Sky. "Ai'Sky, is Rain with you?" she asked in a puzzled voice. "No ya, he went with you," Sky replied, equally puzzled. "And why would he leave you alone?" he added. "Then can you guys come and see where he is? I can't enter the male facilities dude," she cringed. "On our way," Sky said, as he hung up.

Rain was not there, he was not anywhere. They alerted their bodyguards, who the Theerpanayakul family had sent with them. The whole lot of them were whisked away back to the resort, terrified now as to where Rain could be. When they recounted the events, the whole house was in an uproar. Amidst all the confusion and chaos, Phayu strode in, irritated at the delay, and super excited to see his Rain again. But the sight that met his eyes was unbelievable. "What the hell is happening?" he asked. "It's Rain," Sky said. "Rain? What happened to him? Where is he?" Phayu asked, looking all around. "He is missing Phi," Yihwa said, tears pouring down her face. Even though this was all part of a plan, Yihwa was still scared. This was Rain, her best boy and he was in danger.

"Missing? What the hell do you mean missing?" the aura around Phayu changed. So far, people had seen Phayu in his sweetest form, a nice, well mannered boy. Suddenly, they were all faced with Venice Theerpanayakul, the son of Vegas Theerpanayakul, the first born of the family who was a part of everyone's nightmares. "Phayu, sit down. Please let us explain, okay?" Vegas asked. "Sit down? How can I sit down? If it had been Pa, would you have been able to sit down? And what will you explain? How did Rain go missing on your watch Dad? Care to tell me?" he asked, his breathing shallow and eyes blazing with fear and anger.

"P'Phayu?" Phayu turned around at Sky's voice. "There is something you need to see," he said. "What? Right now?" Phayu asked, clearly not in the mood. "Khap Phi. Rain said you must see it," Sky said. "Rain? What is it?" Phayu asked. Sky switched on the TV in the room, and Rain's image and voice filled the room. "P'Phayu, just like you asked me to listen to you when you told me about your past, I want to you to listen to me. You will not blame a single person in this house for what has happened. This was all part of my plan. And from now, till I am found, you must not be my P'Phayu. You have to become Venice Theerpanayakul and use logic and find me. I made this plan because I trust you Phi, just the way you asked me to trust you all those years ago. You came for me Phi, and I trust you will find me again. Until then, your 'little one' will wait for you. Don't be too late na?" Rain said, his smile the most beautiful thing he had seen.

"All those years ago? What did he mean?" Phayu asked. Type went and hugged him tight, much to his surprise. "Phayu, Rain was the little boy you saved 12 years ago, who helped you get to the vent," Pai said, unable to control his tears as well. Phayu was taken aback. Phayu thought back to that day. He had been enamoured by the boy's bravery, inspite of such dire circumstances, and his mind had been blown by the trust he had seen in the little one's eyes. Pai and he had been trained all their lives, inspite of living in Chiang Mai, to get out of situations like that. But that little boy had stolen his heart by not showing one iota of fear. Rain had been that boy? Is that why he had felt such a depth of emotion when he had seen him?

Phayu had never forgotten the sensation of his pinkie interlocking with the little boy's. A wealth of feelings had flown between them, and the trust he had seen in his eyes had pressed against his heart, making it beat faster. It had been as if something had tied them together in that moment, like a weave, infinite and never ending, and he had even kissed his forehead. Even in the later years, he had put down the breathlessness he had felt to the adrenaline he had used to escape from there. He had spoken about his 'little one' to anyone who would hear, not even knowing his name. and when they had returned to Chiang Mai, he had told Amy and Lhong too. Although he hadn't mentioned the circumstances leading to their meeting, he had described his beauty and bravery in great detail. But towards the end of that summer, Amy had told him she liked him, and the defiant little boy had become a distant memory in the excitement of a new journey.

And now his Rain was gone again. But this time it was the brave little boy's own plan. "What was he thinking Dad?" Phayu asked, his heart unable to understand whatever was happening. Vegas and Kinn explained everything to him. Phayu was livid. "Why didn't you say anything? Why did no one tell me anything?" "Phayu, Rain was fed up of feeling insecure. He knew that getting Lhong out of your life was of the utmost importance. And while no one is more scared than I am, for the safety of my son, I let him do this for the sake of his sanity," Type said. "So please, respect his decision and let's do this." Phayu nodded.

"It's connected!" Singto shouted. Everyone rushed to the security room. "What is happening?" Phayu asked. "Rain's chain has a tracker. He seems to have activated it," he said. "Where is he? Move and talk Singto, move and talk!" Vegas said. "Tharn, we need all of you to stay here. Please. We will get Rain back, safe and sound," Kinn said. "We understand. We will become burdens and you have a more important person to protect. Please go, and get our son back," Tharn said, and Type nodded beside him. Pai quickly kissed Sky. "Take care of everyone for me, okay?" he said. "Come back safe Phi, and bring everyone back safe," he said, his heart in his eyes, worry for everyone clear in his voice.

"So where is he?" Vegas asked again. "He is at the reservoir area just before Nong Han," Arm reported. The Theerpanayakul men and their bodyguards drove as fast as the could. "He has not spoken yet. Has he forgotten?" Singto asked, puzzled. "Forgotten what?" Phayu asked, worried. "His necklace also has a voice transmitter, but he needs to speak if it needs to be activated," Arm said. "What if he is not in the condition to speak?" Pai said, angst clear in his voice. They could not afford to lose Rain. If that happened then they would lose Phayu again, and this time, he would lose Sky too. He knew Sky loved Rain like his own brother, and losing Rain meant losing Sky.

"Don't say th..," Singto began. "It's done! He spoke!" Arm said, shushing everyone. Rain's voice came loud and clear through the transmitter. "And did you seriously think kidnapping me is going to solve all your problems?" Rain asked, a puzzled note in his voice. "Of course. You are Phayu's weakness, and he is his family's weakness. We get you, they fall like dominoes," an unknown voice said. "Tawan," Vegas' voice was hard and cold. Rain started to laugh. "What? Why are you laughing?" another voice asked. "Must be Lhong," Arm whispered. "If you think that I am P'Phayu's weakness or that P'Phayu is his family's weakness, you are mistaken. That family has no weakness. And I am their strength," he said, the smile on his face coming through clearly.

"But I don't understand. Why them?" Rain asked, sincerely curious. "They hurt my dad," Lhong said. "Plus me," he added. "You?" "When Phayu and Pai came to stay in Chiang Mai, we didn't know who they were. We were around 12 when dad told us about their origins, and told us to get close to them. But when they came back from their annual vacation to Bangkok, Phayu started talking about some guy he had met. I was livid! Before I could say or do anything, Amy told him that she likes him, and he accepted. I thought he liked girls and kept quiet. But he was mine! MINE!! And I vowed to get him back. Then Amy was diagnosed with cancer. It was benign, so she would get better soon in any case," Lhong stopped there, his ears pricking up. "Is someone here dad?" he asked.

"I will go check. Put the men on alert!" saying that Tawan left the room. "If it was benign, how did P'Amy die? Why didn't she get better?" Rain asked. "Because I changed her medicines," Lhong laughed, madness clear in his voice. Rain was shocked to say in the least. Those who were listening in the car were also stunned to hear the venom spewing out of Lhong. "I would have killed her either ways. She just made my job easier," he cackled again. "We are almost there," Pol said. "We will stop here and split. No point alerting them, so walking is better," Boom said. All the men got out. "Spread out and go the long way. Surround the area. Porche, Pete and Pai, get in range with long distance rifles. I would have asked Phayu too, but I know he would want to come with us, right?" Kim asked. "Yes Uncle Kim," Phayu said, his eyes trained on the building they were about to storm.

"Did you seriously kill your own sister? Your twin?" Rain's voice came clear in his ears, disgust lacing his tone. "She was in my way. Phayu was mine. And he still is. You are just a useless piece of shit who took him away from me," Lhong said. "Do you seriously think that you would have got P'Phayu? After all this? You think he would have never found out what you did to P'Amy?" Rain asked in disbelief. "I would have managed to make him forget all about her. I knew I was away, so I kept reminding him of the promise he made to her, so that he would not look at anyone else. But you popped the fuck up, God knows from where! But I don't care! I will kill you, and he will be mine!!"

Rain understood one thing clearly. This man was crazier than his father. He had never heard someone so openly admitting to having murdered their own sibling, a twin at that. He was demented if he thought that P'Phayu wouldn't have figured it out once Lhong had gotten close to him. You could not hide something this horrible. And Rain was appalled at the lack of guilt in Lhong. This was definitely not normal. "You are not normal Lhong. Do you mean to say that you felt no guilt at killing your sister?" Rain could feel his gorge rise. "Guilt? For what? I would burn the world, if that got me Phayu," he grinned maniacally. Phayu, who was listening to all this, was completely repulsed.

They had started moving silently. The whole warehouse area was surrounded, and they were closing in. When Kinn gave the all-clear, Porche, Pete and Pai started taking down their men one by one. Others flooded into the warehouse before Tawan had a chance to make a move. "Long time no see Tawan," Kinn and Vegas said at the same time. Because they were all using silencers, Lhong was not aware that they had been surrounded and a large number of their men were now decimated. His voice was still coming through the transmitter. He was too busy boasting to have heard Phayu come up behind him. Before he could do anything, Phayu hit him with the butt of his gun, and he fell.

Phayu rushed to Rain, and untied the ropes around his hands and legs. He pulled him up and frantically gave him a once-over. "Are you okay baby?" he asked, his mind totally relieved to see Rain without a scratch. In response, Rain pulled him close and kissed him, glad to see his P'Phayu safe and sound in front of him. "Ai'Phayu!" Lhong screamed. "You are mine!" he shouted. "Never! Never you bastard! You actually killed your sister? How could you even think I would have anything to do with an asshole like you?" Phayu said, revolted at Lhong's words. "I told you, he will never love you," Rain said. "Well then, if you can't be mine, you can't be his also Ai'Phayu," he said. Saying that, he aimed his gun at Phayu. "Phiiiiii, nooooo," saying that Rain threw himself in front of Phayu, just as a shot clearly rang out!
