Chapter 64: Pawn, King, and Rook pt.1
Rook shot up with a strangled cry, and instantly his eyes flew down to his chest as he thought about the spear that had just been impeded there. But he blinked in surprise as he saw, not his scaled undside - or any scales at all actually, but what looked to be a human chest covered by a type of vest. Seeing that he quickly took inventory of the rest of his body, eyes wide as his hands flew all over.
Okay, so his hands were still dragon like, so were his feet. He still had his wings, tail, and ears (earrings included, but very shattered), but everything else was not him. Short, soft, hair. Skin instead of scales. A human shape, it was all just so weird.
Maybe this is who Grian is, he thought mutely, remembering how he'd been called that name before. Was...was he Grian? No, no that couldn't be it, no way could he be Grian! If he was then he would have known who all those people were. But he did recognize them, a traitorous part of his mind whispered, he knew who they were and he felt for them. He hadn't felt anything for anyone before. Actually, he hadn't thought at all until he saw them.
Rook was pulled out of his existential crisis when the scenery around him changed, turning into a hospital room. Scrambling to his feet he looked around, eyes landing on a man and woman, the woman in a bed and holding something in her arms. The man looked nearly identical to how he looked now, though his face was shaper and his hair longer, and of course his eyes that were as red as rubies. The woman had long, tussled, platinum blond hair, and eyes a deep violet, just like his own Rook thought, pieces fitting into place. These were his parents, or Grian's parents at least.
"I have thought of a name, and don't worry I've stuck to your family traditions." The woman said with a teasing tone, eyes sparkling even through the exhaustion both in them and on her face.
The man laughed, "I wasn't worried about that dear, my mother isn't here to hound us about the traditions." He brushed a few strands of hair away from her face lovingly, eyes traveling down to the bundle in her arms, "Though do feel free to save my ass later and say it."
"Xenagoras Void!" She cried with mock outrage, "Do not swear in front of our son! Goodness knows Xeres learning half a curse is enough, we don't need you tainting yet another poor soul!"
Xenagoras pouted, a huff leaving him, "Hey! It's only half my fault he started saying that, the rest is all Lina!"
The woman gave her husband a disapproving look, but didn't argue further, "I picked the name Xelqua. I was thinking you'd get to pick his middle name."
"How gracious of you, Queen Alexia, to let me give this wonder a middle name." Grinned Xenagoras, hand moving the bundle so that a baby's sleeping face was uncovered, "Well since I've been so graciously given this chance I name him Asher."
Alexia gently ran her fingers over the baby's cheek, lovingly shining in her violet eyes, "Xelqua Asher Void, you will do great things one day, my son."
"He will." Her husband agreed, placing his hands over her own, "He'll be our little shining star."
Rook had no time to process what he'd just seen before the hospital room faded into a backyard full of people. Xenagoras was standing next to another man, they looked like related in some way, probably brothers. Alexia was sitting with, who he now was pretty sure was a baby version of him, in her arms, two young boys standing on either side of her.
"Has he said anything yet?" The brunette boys asked, big green eyes looking up at the baby in wonder.
"Not yet." Smiled Alexia, "But we're talking to him a lot, so we're hoping he'll start saying things soon."
"Just don't let him near Xavion." Giggled a green skinned woman with dark hair, a cup in her hands, "Lord knows how bad he is at teaching kids good first words."
"I can hear you Lin!" Called the man talking to Xenagoras, looking up from his conversion, "And maybe is a good word to know!"
Line gave him a look, "It isn't when you ask him if he wants something or not!"
Whilst the adults were talking/arguing the albino boy gently took the baby's hand (Rook did not wish to call himself a baby, no matter how weird it was referring to himself in third person, even if it was only in his head) which got the, now one year old, to look at him. "Hello, I am your cousin Xeres! But daddy told me that might be too hard for you to say, so you can just call me Xer!"
Little Xelqua gave a happy giggle, clapping his small first together as he looked at his white haired cousin. The first boy saw his brother introduce himself so he did so as well, "And I am your other cousin, Xisuma!" And he also received giggles and claps, much to his delight.
The twins turned to beam at their father, being proud to have done just as they were thought, but their attention was brought back to the source of their pride when a new kind of babel startled leaving the youngest Void.
"Cu-cusn." Xelqua said slowly, face scrunched up as he said the word. He laughed with glee and started repeating the word over and over, "Cusn! Cusn!"
The twins beamed even wider down at their baby cousin. And soon they too joined in with the chanting, though they used the proper wording.
"Those two, they were there, at the red moon!" Rook breathed, eyes focused in on the two, knowing the vision might end soon, "Their my family, but I didn't recognize them? But Iskall and that other man, them I know. What the hell is going on?"
He shook his head as the view faded, and he relaxed as he waited to see more about his childhood. So he let out a loud gasp as Alexia's bleeding from suddenly fell to the floor, a now four year old him sobbing nearby.
"Mommy!" The young Xelqua cried, clumsy feet taking him to the hurt women, "Mommy!"
Alexia shushed him gently as she took his shaking hand in hers, "Hey, shhh baby calm down, it's okay, mommy's okay." She let out a hacking cough, blood now dribbling down her chin, "Can you promise me something Xelqua?"
He sniffed loudly, whipping away a few tears, "Yes?"
"Look after your daddy for me, okay? He's going to need you."
The boy then started full on sobbing, clutching onto his mother's blood soaked dress with tiny fists. His cries grew louder as the front door was thrown open, heavy steps echoing down the hall, "ALEXIA! XELQUA! Are you two here?!"
"Daddy!" Cried Xelqua, looking up from his mother and towards the doorway. Where seconds later a disheveled, wounded, and blood covered Xenagoras Void appeared, red eyes wide with horror. As soon as his eyes landed on his wife he let out a strangled cry, falling to his knees by her side.
"Lexi! Oh god, Lexi love can you hear me?" The woman just hummed, half lidded eyes lazily looking towards her husband, "Shit. Lexi, god, stay put here! I'm getting Xavion!"
"Please don't leave." Alexia whispered, violet eyes meeting Xenagoras' red ones, "You swore swore you'd be by my side till the end. We-well keep your word, the-then Void."
"Alexia." The man said desperately, tears building in his eyes as the implications of her words registered to him, "Don't talk like that, you'll be fine! Xav will come and you'll be fine!"
She gave him a sad smile, "Xen, my love, please don't lie to yourself. You'll just end up hurting yourself more in the end."
The man broke, cries and sobs leaving him as he held on to his wife's body tightly, Xelqua loudly crying by his side as well. He didn't know when she really passed on, but he did feel the last of the fight leave her battered body, and it just made him sob louder.
That's where the vision ended, if it was because it had nothing more to show, or because Rook had started crying, he didn't know. This woman, even with how little he knew her, was his mother, and he'd just watched her die, again too apparently. Maybe forgetting everything might have had its upsides, he mused wiping away a few tears, especially for things like this.
Rook cursed as a new surrounding started to form, he wasn't ready for more yet. But he had no choice in the matter, so he was forced to watch what showed up.
Xelqua was now five, and at the moment he was sitting in the kitchen doodling on a piece of paper with a red crayon, humming a nonexistent tune happily as he went along. At the sound of the front door opening he looked up with a smile, excited for his dad to be back after such a long day. But when the man walked in he completely ignored the young boy, eyes blank and dull as he walked by without even looking up.
The dirty blonde boy frowned, a pout forming on his lips, "Dad?"
Xenagoras looked up, eyes seemingly unable to focus on his son at all, "What is it?"
"You didn't give me a hug." Mumbled Xelqua, big eyes looking up at his father, silently asking for one now.
"Now why would I do that?" Laughed Xenagoras hollowly, dull eyes flashing a bright red, "That's just silly."
The five year old let out a tiny whimper, "But-but you always gave me hugs! Mom always said you and her were there for any and all hugs I wanted."
His father's eyes dulled over again, frame saging from its near perfectly postured state, "Your mother isn't here anymore Xelqua. Forget about her." He then walked off, leaving his teary eyed son in the kitchen.
The young boy stayed silent for a long time, tears now streaming down his cheeks. And as his young mind went through his father's words more he soon started sobbing grossly, cheeks going blotchy.
But you said she'd always be with us, the boy wanted to scream, and that as long as we remembered her she'd still be there! He wanted to scream it all out, to beg for his dad to give him a single hug, but he couldn't bring himself to.
Rook looked at Xenagoras with confused eyes. No way was this the same man he'd seen in the other visions, there was no way he was! But still...he looked just the same, well except the eyes of course, but the rest was all there. Of course just because he was deny the truth didn't mean he couldn't take the situation for what it was: the start of something worse.
The next vision cut in, rather abruptly, flashing to a hospital room smaller than the one from the first vision.
A ten year old him sat in the bed, bandages covering his torso, but he did not seem to notice them. Next to him was a gangly teen with glasses, a notebook was sat on the bedside table not far out of reach.
"So you're leaving soon?" Xelqua wondered.
The teen sighed sadly, "Yeah, I'm fully cleared so my parents decided to move back to my childhood home."
"I don't want you to leave, Joe!" The dirty blond said with a pout, small hands taking a hold of Joe's own, "I haven't even told you my name yet!"
"You've picked one?" The teen asked, "Tell me!"
Xelqua grinned from ear to ear, "I found one of Dr. Kaye's books and I found this really cool name that means sun!"
Joe laughed at the smaller, "That's not an answer to what name you picked silly!" Though it was very clear the older boy didn't mind it at all.
"I'm getting there!" The ten year old scowled, but his face broke into a wide smile immediately afterwards, "I picked the name Grian!"
Joe gave him a just as wide smile back, "That's a good one!" He then straightened his back to look more formal, and offered his hand to the younger, "Then let I, Lord Joe Hills, be the first to welcome you properly, Grian."
And there it was, that name again.
Rook shook his head fiercely, all the information hurting to think about. I mean, he went from just thinking of himself as Rook, and now he has Xelqua and Grian too! Seriously, why hadn't he known even the slightest bit about any of this before? Sure the last vision hinted at him getting amnesia, but that was back when he looked to be ten, so that wasn't really anything to jump to conclusions from.
The former dragon let out a deep sigh, hands rubbing against his temples. As much as he wanted to figure out what was going on, it was actually starting to hurt to think about it. So Rook decided to just sit down and relax, and to also pray a new vision didn't show up whilst he was relaxing. And with a deep breath of air, he fell into a comfortable position, the comfort and silence soon lulled him to sleep, his mind shutting down to giving him some mental silence too.
But one question still pounded against his mind: Where was he?
<Yes you read that right, a two part chapter! This ended up being longer then I expected it to be, so I cut it in half to get it out on time (cuz yes, this 2K thing is only half of all that I had planned for this chapter) Anyways I really liked making this, so I'm happy to be making more of it for next chapter! Also here's a little drawing I wiped up :3
It's all the Grian's! Going from Xelqua, to Grian, to Grian but under Fallacy's control/Rook as not a dragon, and of course Rook. I'm really happy with how this turned out :3 Anyways I'm being nagged to go to bed, so imma do that now.
Stay safe everyone and have an absolutely wonderful time!>
