Chapter 63: How do I know you?
Rook looked into the red eyes of the dark haired man in front of him, a sense of safety and recognition sparking in his mind as he kept eye contact with the other. He knew this person, yet he could not remember a single thing about him. It confused him to no end, a feeling that was showing through the tilt of his head, but that didn't help Rook figure out the mystery of this dark haired man.
Though all thoughts to figure out who this was pushed back when the green one on the floor groaned, the man came out of unconsciousness. He gave the stocky man a few gentle nudges, as if to gently coax him into an awake state. And by the sight of a brown eye blinking open, still glazed over by having them closed so long, it seems to have worked. But that was not all that was in his eyes, pain shone in them too, but as he caught sight of Rook's face his eyes were filled with another thing, relief. "Told you we'd get you back." He wheezed, a strained grin forming on his face.
Rook did not know what the man was referring to, but the tone and sentiment was not lost on him, these men had searched for him, and they had now finally found him. So he rubbed his snout against the laying man's face, completely dwarfing it in size, but neither minded. The first man squeezed up to them, placing one hand on Rook's snout and the other on the other man's cheek, a relieved sigh leaving his mouth as he gazed down at the other, "I'm so relieved to see you awake again Iskall! Thank god you had those potions with you."
"Thank your own spoon self," The brown eyed man -Iskall apparently, the name fit him- laughed, "I keep them with me for you after all!"
The dragon cooed down at the two, the banter felt so natural to hear to him, like it was just another daily thing, but there was never any banter around the islands.
At the thought of the islands Rook's head shot up and towards where he knew Fallacy to be sitting, did they know anything about these two men? The thought made him sniff in disdain, for some reason it did not feel like a right thing to ask them. He looked down at Iskall and the red eyed man, cooing to get their attention. Once he had it he motioned up towards Fallacy, a questioning tilt to his head. Rook huffed when they just looked in confusion, the one not on the ground trying to look over at what he had motioned towards. So he leaned his head down, and with a jerk of his head signal for the dark haired man to get on, and after a second of hesitation he set himself down on the dark scaled neck. Rook lifted his head, once more motioning towards Fallacy.
He was just sitting down when the arms wrapped around him tightened, and with a rumble of surprise he watched the armored man drop down to the ground in a tumble. At first he'd thought the man had dropped in surprise, Fallacy could be quite a sight to see after all, but based on how he was happily talking in rapid whispers to Iskall before rushing ahead of Rook, hand waving in the air, that was not the case. It took the violet eyed dragon a second to figure out what he was waving at, until a bunch of people came walking over.
In seconds Rook was in a defensive position, teeth bared as a deep growl verbated low in his throat. And only due to the dark haired man stepping in front of the group did he not kill them in a blaze of fire, "Don't hurt them! They're friendly!" And when Rook did not budge he tried again, "Please, they just want to help Iskall!" Then Rook allowed them to pass. Well, most of them at least. Because within seconds he had the bearded one trapped under his paw, fire building up in his throat.
He distantly heard multiple cries of "Cub!" around him, but his blazing eyes were only on the man under his paw. This man, his scent was on Iskall, he'd hurt Iskall! He pressed down harder, ears twitching at the sound of the chest-plate breaking under the weight.
"Grian please stop! You're hurting him, you're hurting him!" Rook twitch at the name, eyes turning back to find the red eyed man's eyes wide with horror, and he flattered under the look. But looking farther back at Iskall, arm butchered to the point of no return, made him push all of that down. The person responsible for that needed to pay for it.
Rook raised a paw to strike down at the man who dared to hurt the man behind him, why he was feeling so protective he didn't know but he just brushed it off to think about later, when a greenish-blue orb flew right into the bearded man's chest, Iskall appearing in a sparkle of particles after it. With a dull thud he set his paw down again, a distressed coo leaving him as Iskall let out a cry of pain.
All thoughts of Cub were left forgotten as he pulled the injured man off, picking him before setting him down gently again away from the man who was just under his claws, concerned coos leaving Rook as he wrapped himself around Iskall.
"It wasn't Cub." Wheezed the brunette, his good hand trembling as he reached and placed it on Rook's snout, "It was someone else, someone taking the form of him for sure, but not the man you're attacking." Rook blinked down at him, mind processing the words slowly. Turning back to the man he just attached he took in a whiff of air again, it still smelt like the scent lingering around Iskall. But trusting the injured man's judgment he took another sniff at said man himself, and as soon as the scent finished passing through his nostrils they flared, a cry of outrage escaping him as he stumbled up on his legs.
The shadow man he'd seen Fallacy sometimes talking too, one of their most loyal followers, had done this? Surely they wouldn't have let him do that, not with Rook knowing them and all. But then again, the dragon turned to look down at Iskall again, how did he know them? And what was with the name that had been called out to him, Grian, what was up with that?
Shaking his head Rook let out a roar of frustration, claws digging into the ground as his tail violently swished behind him.
Nothing made sense, not a single thing! There were so many things, so many people, he knew and recognized, yet he didn't have the faintest of clues as to what they were. His breaths came out with puffs of purple fire, reflecting his inner frustrations.
But his attention soon shifted to the being clad in black, their scent the chilly sting of a raging tundra, but with the faintest scent of withered flesh, who'd kept quiet yet they also seemed to be interested in Rook. They were strangely familiar, like a family member you forgot you had and now you're seeing them again, kind of familiar. But they, unlike the rest, came with a flashback.
"Grian, I promise you that I'll get you out of here, no matter what."
"Don't bother, you'll only get hurt!"
"I'll be fine, little one. I am Death after all."
Rook let out a mighty cry, eyes wide and wild as they looked around frantically. This world, he knew this world! He'd been here before, he'd been trapped here! With another cry he leaped away, hoping that getting away would make the flood of old emotions to stop. But it didn't work, and his mind just kept getting assaulted by image after imagine of painful times in this world, the red moon taunting him high up in the sky out of his reach.
The dragon stopped as the memories quieted down, still there but not hurting them with their awful truths, gaze snapping over to where he knew Fallacy was seated, three people hidden under the now covered cage. Were they too like the ones here, people he knew but knew not a thing about? Only one was to find out.
Rook spread his wings, getting himself ready for flight, only faltering slightly at the pleading that had broken out behind him, before, before taking off with an impressive beat of his wings. He let out a comforting coo when he saw the red eyed man's wide eyes, and then he turned to fly towards his target. As he landed he made sure to keep his head held high, a growl on his lips as he looked down at the being in front of him.
And Fallacy looked right back, sharp, white, teeth practically glowing in the red moonlight as they smirked at him.
"You're slow, you know?" Fallacy chuckled, eyes shining with wicked mirth. At his silence they continued on, "I mean, look what it took for you to break out of unbound chains! And even then you're pathetic enough to not even do it properly. Shame I need you dead, with a few more properly erased memories you could have been properly useful to me."
Rook growled at the person he once followed, not by choice it was starting to sound like, eyes laser focused on them alone. And in turn Fallacy maintained eye contact, "Tell me, do you even know who you are outside of Rook? Even an inkling of who you are?" They had now moved from their throne, nothing stopping them from leaving it.
"Do you know how much of a freak of nature you are?" Fallacy whispers sweetly, mockingly. "And that's coming from the likes of me."
Rook's breathing was coming out in short puffs, the air constricting around him as the serpent approached, but his mind was trapped within itself, jumbled words jumping around trying to form words in his muddled mind. So he had no idea that Fallacy was upon him until an ice-cold spear was shoved in between the plates of his belly, said deity at the other end.
His vision darkened, feet growing so numb that he had no possible way to even attempt to stand up. And the new barrage of scrambled letters wouldn't have helped much anyways, because now he could actually start picking some of them out. And just as he was starting to make sense of things the aching chill in his chest spread, ice moving to cover more of his scales.
And with one last breath his mind flashed a sentence, and then the dark took him over.
Do not worry, my little star, I'm here
<This was made all withing a day and I'm pretty sure I changed the plan for this chapter at least three times, more if you count all the different endings I had before this one, but I'm happy with how it turned out! Also a rare Rook POV! That's new! :3 I say as the one who wrote it. Anyways I believe that's all I have. Now for the best part: Naming the chapter |:/
So stay safe and have a wonderful time veryone!>
