Chapter 45: Three kids alone on a server
Markus was leaning against a pile of shulkers with his feet dangling over the edge of one of them. He was sitting with Rodger who was leaning against a pile of chests not far from him. They had just finished repairing NPG's voice box and were waiting for him to wake up. "So how were you and NPG made? And was there a reason as to why."
Rodger turned to look at him with what could only be described as a "bitch what?" face. "Did you just ask how we were created?"
"Uh, yeah." Answered Markus, running a hand through his hair. "Not a good question?"
"Most definitely not. How about we reverse it to you?" Asked Rodger. "So do tell me Markus how were you born? And why were you born?"
The teen flushed scarlet, trying to bury himself into his hoodie. "Yeah, definitely not a good question."
Rodger gave him a "Told you" smirk before turning a tad more serious. "Though if you're really interested we can explain why and how."
"Really?" Asked Markus gleefully before thinking back at his wording. "Wait, we?"
"Yes we, NPG just woke up."
The mahogany haired teen blinked in surprise. "How can you tell?"
Rodger looked down at him with a sly smirk on his face. "Oh I don't know, how can I? Is it my programming? My hidden abilities no one knows I have? Or -" here he leaned closer to Markus with a smirk, "- I can see him sitting up in the bed."
At the revelation Markus spun around, and sure enough NPG was sitting up in bed. The half demon-half android gave them both a small wave accompanied by a smile.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Spluttered Markus, looking at NPG in disbelief.
"I didn't see a need to." Smiled the android. He hauled himself off the bed before making his way over to the two. "Also can you believe it! I can speak just like the two of you now!"
"Yes you can!" Laughed Rodger, smiling down at his smaller android friend. "And how do you feel about explaining how we came to be to Markus?"
"I feel great about it!" Smiled NPG plopping himself down on the ground. "Now where do we start?"
"How about from the beginning?" Suggested Markus. Leaning forward, eager to know how they came to be.
"Then the beginning it is." Said Rodger. "Well Grian ended up staying in Silverharour (have ever mentioned Markus learning about that? If not then assume that he was told at some point) until a month after Joe left, he spent most of that time recovering in the hospital. He was then moved to the main world where he was adopted by a family of four, and it was all fine and dandy. But then high school happened. We admittedly don't know much about it, he doesn't like talking about it, but I do remember a few things he told us, and stuff I overheard. For one only one person other than him survived high school, and that was Taurtis. It was someone he thought was his friend that did it, which is why he was reluctant to try making friends for a while. His parents decided to keep him home after that and he took online classes, he even got a degree."
"Oh! His biology degree!" Cried Markus, remembering when the builder told him about it. "Still can't believe he has that."
"Well me neither, especially if you look into what he's done the last few years." Agreed Rodger. He then quickly got back to explaining. "Okay what next? Hmm, oh right! It was during this time that NPG was made. Grian had become lonely, so he made himself a companion. It took him months but he managed, although he couldn't get the programining down completely so he improvised. And apparently a good substitute to machinery was a demon, how he decided on that I dare not ask. I was then made a year or so later, and by this point he'd learnt how to make a proper AI. Sure I had some problems in the beginning. -" NPG interrupted with a sly, "He randomly fell in love with electronics. The microwave for example." The robot would have flushed had he had skin, but didn't so he just looked a little less imparased then he would have with the blush. "...As I said, there were a few problems in the beginning."
"We were actually the reason Grian made EVO." Explained NPG, taking over the conversation for Rodger. "He realized what he was doing was bad; creating friends instead of making them. He knew it would slowly be the end of him, so he ran. He got a group he'd met from time to time and made an evolving server for them to enjoy."
"But he told them about you two?" Twin nods answered Markus. "Then why didn't the hermits know about you?"
Rodger turned away to stare blankly at a wall. "I became rusty." He explained, his gaze hardened slightly."And a rusty machine is a dangerous one.
"What do you mean?" Asked Markus, looking at the android with worry.
"I hurt him, Markus. I hurt him a lot." Breathed Rodger, red eyes looking back at the teen. "And the Hermits were already friendly with him, they already liked him. They would have scrapped me, and I don't know about NPG but we weren't taking any risks."
"They would never!" Gasped the mahogany-head. If Grian had said the two androids weren't going to hurt him they'd trust his judgment.
"We didn't know that." Said NPG, coming to stand next to his companion. "And we weren't willing to take any risks."
Markus nodded at them slowly, getting what they were saying. "Grian cares a whole lot about the two of you."
"He does, even if he doesn't say it a lot." Smiled NPG, tail swishing lazily behind him.
"So why do you not really like him? I'm actually really curious." The teen aimed the question at the younger (and was that a weird thing to imagine, Rodger being the younger) of the two.
"I don't dislike him per say." Began Markus, turning to face the other fully once again. "I guess you could say I was just a bit resentful of him. Though I was made too."
"And why is that?"
Rodger sighed deeply, leaning back against the wall. "NPG was always in a unfixed state, and I was mad that he never got fixed and just locked away instead."
"That makes sense." Nodded Markus, seeing where the robot was coming from.
There was a silence after that, it wasn't suffocating, but it also wasn't completely comfortable either. NPG, sensing this, decided that he needed to fix that. "Hey Rodg? Do you remember that time when Grian went by that one pet store a few years back?"
"The one he went to when he wanted to see if we could fit in his phone and still see and talk to him?" Snorted Rodger. "Of course I remember! He stayed for nearly the entire day!"
Markus looked at the two with interest. "I've never heard about this before."
Rodger shook his dark head. "I wouldn't expect you too, he never tells anyone about it."
"Oh we so have to tell you!" Crowed NPG happily. "You see Grian really likes animals, it was his favorite part about biology, and he's always been as drawn to them as they've been to him. So he goes into the pet shop and helps the owner with a particularly tempramental ferret, which was an albino aptly named Malfoy, and it just melts into his hands and lets the owner do his thing. He then offers to help with the other animals, on one condition: He gets to come in and play with the animals anytime. The owner agrees and even offers Grian a job, but he declines saying he wants to finish with his degree before he does anything. So then he spends the entire day just being a god to the workers with his natural skills with the animals."
"Wow, I knew he was good with animals but I didn't know he was that good." Markus said with awe. "How come no one of the Hermits know this?"
"I don't know." Shrugged Rodger. "But I do know that Mumbo, Iskall and Doc do actually know."
"Actually speaking of Doc, how did he and Grian grow close?" Inquired the teen curiously. "I never figured out how."
"I know this one." Smiled Rodger. "Doc is also a big animal lover, cats and foxes in particular, and he went to the same pet shop that Grian went to from time to time. They became friends there, and I know what you're going to say "then why didn't they say anything to the other hermits?" -" Markus huffed, a bit offended he didn't get to ask his question." - Well you see they just simply forgot to mention it. I couldn't truly believe it either, but that's what those two idiots did. It wasn't until someone pointed it out and they confirmed it that they realized they'd forgotten to tell anyone."
"What about all of the pranking?" Asked Markus, trying to suppress giggles from imagining Doc and Grian' faces when they realized they forgot to tell anyone.
"Oh? So you don't go around pranking Grian and EX?" Asked Rodger with a smirk.
"I have no idea what you're talking about!" Giggled Mrrkus.
"Whatever you say Chicken Boy, whatever you say."
"Hey!" Cried the teen indignity. "It's Poultry Man thank you very much!"
His indigent face then fell into one of realization as NPG and Rodger's laughter filled the room, the teens own slowly joined theirs after a while too. Who knew it was that easy to get a "superhero" to reveal their identity? And why didn't supervillains ever just misspell the name to annoy the heroes and make them correct it? It was a stupidly easy plan! And if it failed nothing wrong could happen.
By the end of the day all three of them had ended up in a cuddle pile of pillows and blankets. Markus didn't question why the androids needed to sleep, deciding that it wasn't worth asking them. Plus he was more tired than a man who had been forced awake for a month, so it wasn't very much at the forefront of his mind at the moment.
It was with happy smiles the three fell asleep, all oblivious to the situation their friends were in at the moment.
<I'd like to start with a big sorry, I wanted something out by Monday but I have been burnt out the last few days but I'm getting back into writing again so everything should be going back to normal soon! Also can I just point out how Markus is the oldest one here? Just thought I'd mention that.
Anyhow, stay safe and have a wonderful time everyone! I'll see you all next time!>
