Chapter Seven - Home Sweet Home

Chloe looked around her new room. It was luxurious in a simple kind of way. There were golden colours mixed with red in the bed sheets and curtains. The wall was made of stone and the window had intricate ironwork worked into the glass. The bed was large and there was a love seat in the corner facing a good sized TV. She had a small kitchenette near the door that was stocked with some left overs from the feast last night. She even had her own private bathroom, which she was very happy to have. There was nothing quite so gross, in her opinion, as sharing a bathroom with a bunch of people. She had detested it in university. Her room made her think of a castle and a hotel room at the same time.

She had just woken up and was staring at the ceiling. It was painted with a biblical scene. She could swear that every ceiling in Vatican City was painted. It was amazing. There were also some, what she assumed were priceless, paintings hanging around the walls. It wasn't exactly homey, but she didn't imagine she would spend too much time in this room. Too much time alone at this point would not be a good thing. She couldn't think yet. The pain was all too fresh.

She threw the rich bedding off of her body and hopped down to the floor. The cool stone felt uncomfortable on her feet, so she opened one the drawers of her dresser looking for some socks. She was amazed to see that everything she would need to be comfortable had been provided for her. Socks, underwear, bras, shirts, sweaters, pants and shorts. She took out a warm looking pair of socks and pulled them onto her feet. She felt instantly better.

Next, she walked over to the fridge. She saw some yogurt and pulled it out. She was delighted to see some frozen berries in the freezer and she pulled them out as well. She looked over at the cupboards above the sink with a smile. This wasn't so bad. Her favourite breakfast was practically made for her. She opened one of the uppers and saw a full set of dishes. She took a bowl out and scooped in some yogurt and frozen berries. Then she sat down on the love seat and turned on the TV.

The station that first came on was the news and the images that flooded her screen were of refugees arriving on the shores of Italy. Chloe squirmed in her place. She looked down at the blood red juice from the berries and felt her stomach flip. Oh great, she thought. She quickly looked for the remote control and found it under her leg. She turned the channel until she found some children's television shows and was content when she came across "The Smurfs." She couldn't handle reality right now and was relieved when she felt her stomach settle. She stared at the screen filled with blue little dudes and ate her breakfast.

She was just putting the last berry into her mouth when she heard a soft knock on her door. She was still in her pyjamas, another thing miraculously provided for her, as she went to answer. She peered through the keyhole and saw a tall man dressed in the ridiculous uniform of the Swiss Guard. But even with his billowing yellow and blue striped sleeves, she could see he was an impressive figure. She smiled to herself as she opened the door. "Good morning," she said.

"Good morning, Ms Desjardins. I trust you had some breakfast?" he asked in an accented voice.

"Yes, do I have you to thank for that?" she asked.

The guard blushed a little bit, "Yes, I stocked your room to meet all of your needs," he answered.

Chloe quickly reflected on everything in her room, right down to her most personal items. Awkward. "Uh, thanks," she said.

"I am your personal guard. My name is Gregory. If you find that you need anything I hadn't anticipated, please just let me know. I was sent from the Pope. He demands your audience in an hour. I will let you get ready and come back to lead you to him," said Gregory.

"That would be fine. And thank you Gregory, you've made a difficult adjustment a little easier," Chloe said with feeling.

Gregory nodded with an understanding look on his face, "You are welcome, Ms Desjardins."

"Please, Gregory, just call me Chloe," she replied.

He nodded and said, "Very well, Chloe. I will see you in an hour."

"Okay. Thanks," and Chloe shut the door as he walked away, down the long hallway. Okay, so I have an hour to prepare for a pope who is not going to be thrilled to see me, Chloe thought. She needed to see Quinn and Felicity to help her prepare. But first, she needed a shower and proper clothes. What did one wear to see the Pope? Jeans didn't seem appropriate somehow. She wandered over to her closet and opened the door. She was amazed to see what looked like a nun's habit in front of her. She was not wearing that. She rolled her eyes, closed the door and went to get into the shower.

As she stepped into the hot water, she thanked Gregory for supplying all of her favourite soaps and shampoos. He was officially her favourite person in the world. It felt good to wash off all of the emotion from the last forty-eight hours or so. She stood under the steady stream of hot water and felt her muscles relax. She breathed deeply and felt the cleansing of her whole being. She had needed this time.

After what she was sure was an extremely long time for a shower, she reluctantly turned the water off. She reached for the plush white towel and enjoyed its softness against her skin. She got out of the shower and opened the closet door. She stared at the habit for a few minutes, slowly resigning herself to putting it on.

She heard another knock at her door. This one was more firm. She walked over to the door and looked through the peek hole again. She was happy to see Felicity and Quinn standing there. They were both dressed in what looked to be battle gear. There was some similar colouring to what Gregory was wearing, but only in the accents. Felicity and Quinn looked much more dangerous with the majority of their clothing being red and black. They also carried some pretty intimidating looking weapons. She opened the door, wrapped in her towel. "Am I ever glad to see you two," she said. They smiled and Chloe invited them in. "What am I supposed to wear to go see the Pope?"

They exchanged looks. "He's called for you already?" asked Felicity.

Chloe's eyes widened. "Uh, yeah. My Swiss Guard came a little while ago to give me my... summons, I guess is what you'd call it. I've probably got about forty minutes until he comes to get me."

Quinn sighed deeply. "Okay," he started, "You need to wear your nun's habit. That will show the most respect."

"I disagree. She can't show weakness now. She should wear her hunting gear. Remind Him who she really is," argued Felicity.

Chloe looked from one to the other. Great, she thought. If they can't agree on this simple thing, I'm in trouble. She huffed, "Thanks, guys. That's really helpful." She went back to her closet to see if she had hunting gear, but she only saw the habit. She gestured to the clothing with her hands, "Looks like they've limited my options," she said.

"Probably because you didn't say the oath properly," said Quinn.

Chloe and Felicity both looked at him with wide eyes and raised brows. "Yeah, probably, thanks for that," said Chloe.

"Geez, Chloe, all you had to do was repeat what He said. You didn't have to get all defiant," argued Quinn.

Chloe slowly nodded her head, "Yeah, I suppose so. But how binding is this oath?"

"As binding as any other promise you make," said Felicity, "So, if you're asking if you can break it, the short answer is 'yes'. But the consequences, I imagine, would be pretty swift. I don't know of anyone ever breaking their oath. Like, ever."

Chloe reflected on this information. It was good to know. She slowly reached for the habit in the closet and took it off the hook. There were a few different pieces that she would have to figure out how to put on in the correct order. "Gregory forgot to get me some makeup," she said quietly.

Felicity snorted, "Of course he did. We can sneak out to do some shopping later." She put her hand on Chloe's shoulder. "Don't worry, Chloe. Everything will be alright. Just tow the party line for now. We can talk more about everything later. But right now, time is of the essence. We need you in our ranks. Tell the Pope what He wants to hear and get your hunting gear. You can't hunt as safely without it."

Chloe nodded her head with more resolve. Felicity was right. "Okay. I can do this," she said walking over to her dresser. She pulled out some undergarments. "I don't really care if you stay or go, but I'm about to get naked. Just a heads up." She smiled as Quinn's eyes grew wide and he quickly turned around, just in time to miss her let go of the towel.

Felicity laughed wickedly at Quinn's reaction. "Awesome," she said as she turned around as well.
