CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
THE GATES OF AVALON ( ii. )
When Merlin hobbles through the door, drenched in rotten fruit, Calliope holds in laughter as she munches on a fresh apple. Gaius stops sweeping the floor, looking the young sorcerer up and down with a hidden smile of amusement.
"Have you been playing with your food again?"
Merlin shoots Gaius an annoyed look as he strolls past him, "The King put me in the stocks."
Calliope takes another bite of the juicy, red apple, "What'd you do this time, wizard boy?"
"Nothing."
Knowing the truth that Merlin probably got caught in his lies about Arthur's whereabouts, Calliope lets out a quiet huff of frustration. She's just glad that she's not the only one with suspicions about Sophia. Morgana is troubled with constant worry about the Prince when he's around her.
Merlin turns to Gaius, "Honestly it wasn't my fault. Arthur wanted to get out of going on patrol with Uther and the guard so I covered for him and took the blame."
"And Arthur was prepared to let you do this?"
Merlin glances over his shoulder, "It was his idea."
Gaius gives Merlin a curious look, "And what made him neglect his duties? It must have been something terribly important."
Calliope lets out a bark of sarcastic laughter, "Yeah, real important alright."
Merlin nods, "Sophia."
Gaius glances between Merlin and Calliope, "The girl from the forest?"
"He wanted to take her out for the day. He is besotted."
"But they've only just met," Calliope looks back at Gaius, getting the feeling that he too shares his own suspicions.
"I know," Merlin turns around. "I guess it must've been love at first sight--" Merlin is cut off by Calliope's apple colliding with the back of his head. "Ow! Damn it, Cal!"
Caliope crosses her arm over her chest with a pinched expression, "Love at first sight isn't a real thing," she says.
"Why did you throw an apple at my head?"
Calliope shrugs, "You were in the stocks, and I missed it. I had to get my throw in."
A grin covers his lips as he shakes his head, "No, I think... I think you're just jealous that Arthur is showing interest in another girl."
Rising to her feet with a glare, Calliope points at him, "Do you want to get the shit beat out of you, wizard boy?"
With a laugh, Merlin takes a step closer to her, a wide grin lifting his face, "Calliope, do you have a crush on Prince Arthur?"
"That's it," Calliope gives him a threatening stare. "I'm going to kick your ass."
Merlin throws his hands up in surrender, "What if I told you that he talks about you... All the time."
She quirks an eyebrow, "What does he say?"
Merlin opens his mouth, but before one word comes out, he shuts his lips in a tight line. Calliope grabs the collar of his shirt, yanking him down to her eye level.
"I've been sworn to secrecy!" Merlin yells as Calliope cocks her head to the side.
"Merlin," she starts in a calm voice, "tell me what he said."
He inhales a sharp breath, "Well, he thinks you're... beautiful."
"Okay, and?"
"And..." he sighs reluctantly. "That's all I can tell you. I'm sorry."
Letting go of Merlin's collar with an agitated huff and a pointed stare, Caliope turns away from him, "Better go finish washing up. You stink."
With a knowing look, Merlin swiftly goes to his room. Calliope lets out a small sigh, wondering how Arthur could be so caught up with Sophia after barely knowing her for a full day. Her instincts are telling her something about the situation doesn't add up, but she needs to get proof before she can accuse a princess of being a liar.
"Gaius," Calliope turns to Gaius, who seems to have the same worried expression crossing his aged eyes. "What do you think of Princess Sophia and her father?"
He inhales a sharp breath, "I have my suspicions. You and I both know Arthur isn't acting like himself."
"We need proof-"
"No, Calliope. You don't need to get involved with this. You have enough on your plate already," Gaius takes a few steps towards her. "Let me handle this one, alright?"
Calliope reluctantly nods, every bone in her body aching to investigate their rooms. When she has a hunch, it's hard to make herself hold back because her hunches usually lead to someone being a devious liar with her sword in their neck. Calliope knows people. She's clever and she can read everyone around her easily.
Princess Sophia is no different, and that innocent pretty girl is much more than she seems. Her mask may fool the easy minds of men, but not Calliope.
And when Calliope gets on someone's trail, their lives begin losing time that no one can stop except the sharp end of her steel sword that drips with their vile blood, and then their name fades into the blackness of the night amongst the steady ramble of the bugs and the wind, never to be heard or seen from again.
โ โ โ
Calliope stands, holding her breath and stopping her hand from going to the hidden dagger in her right riding boot as she watches the scene before her unfold. Princess Sophia plants a gentle kiss on Arthur's cheek as they arrive back from their day away from the palace. Calliope takes a deep breath, stopping her murderous thoughts from taking over.
Arthur watches Sophia walk away with a curious enchantment that makes Calliope desire deeply to punch him in the throat and knock some sense into him. She strides up to him with fiery anger in her blue eyes that jerk Arthur back to reality. He scratches his head awkwardly, unsure how to handle the angry ice-kissed blonde.
She crosses her arms over her chest, looking him up and down, "You are the biggest idiot in all the five kingdoms, Arthur Pendragon."
He holds up his hands in surrender, taking a cautious step closer to her, "Calm down-"
She shoves him back, "Skipping morning patrol to go galivant with some pretty little princess? Are you insane? Since when do you not care about protecting the people of Camelot?" He opens his mouth to answer, but Calliope continues to rip into him with no sign of mercy. "And what about our afternoon training session? Do you expect me to do everything by myself now because you have a stupid little crush? Get it together before I decide to kick you in the head to see if you still have a fucking brain in there!"
Arthur stands, dumbfounded by her vocal attack as she storms away with clenched fists. Calliope's chest feels lightened after getting all of that out. Yelling at Arthur is definitely therapeutic. She should do it more often.
How could one person make her so angry? Every aspect of him is more than irritating. In his presence, she feels like she could implodeโlike every inch of her skin is crawling and burningโ and she wants to punch him or kick him or anything to let out all this frustration that has been growing and growing. He's just so arrogant and thoughtless and he hardly ever considers anyone but himself on a daily basis.ย
She hopes her forceful words knocked some sense into him, and that tomorrow he would show up for all his duties and forget about Princess Sophia for a bit.
However, the next day, when word spreads throughout the castle that Arthur didn't show for a very important knighting ceremony, Calliope begins to worry that something even darker than she thought is going on. Arthur cares about all of the knights, especially the ones in training. If he were in his right mind, he wouldn't miss that ceremony for anything.
Maybe he's enchanted. Maybe Sophia and her father have come to Camelot with fatal intentions for Arthur or Uther, or maybe even all of Camelot.
She hurries to Gaius's chambers to share her concerns, but when she arrives and sees Merlin covered in rotten fruit again, she knows Arthur asked him to cover for him once again while he spent time with Sophia.
"Cal, you're here. Good," Gaius says as he leans over an old book. "I fear that Sophia may not be all that she seems."
"Well, obviously," Calliope exclaims as she walks to Gaius, but Merlin looks confused as he stands over a washing bucket.
"Why?"
"What do you know about seers?"
Merlin shrugs, "Not much. They're supposed to be able to see the future, like prophets."
Gaius walks around his table to face Merlin and Calliope, "It's said to be an innate ability. Those that have it are born that way. Some aren't even aware that what they see is the future. It comes to them in their dreams."
"What's this got to do with Sophia?" Merlin asks.
"The night before she and Aulfric came to Camelot, Morgana had a dream. Sophia was in it."
Calliope nods, "Yeah she told me and Gwen about it."
"Before Sophia arrived in Camelot?"
Gaius nods, "I've been watching Morgana since she was very young, and though I've tried to persuade myself otherwise, I realized that some of the things she said she'd dreamt came to pass. I kept it secret from Uther, of course. The gift of prophecy is too close to the work of magic."
Morgana being a seer is extremely dangerous to her. Uther's hatred of anything having to do with magic clouds his judgment of anything else, including his love for his family.
"So, you think Morgana is a seer?" Calliope questions.
"I don't think it. I fear it," Gaius replies. "Morgana says she dreamt that Sophia killed Arthur."
Worry flashes in Merlin's eyes, "Couldn't that have just been a dream? Maybe the woman Morgana saw just looked like Sophia."
"That's what I hoped, but Aulfric caught me in Sophia's room, and in a flash of anger, his eyes changed color."
Changing color? That could be a handful of magical creatures.
"Who are they?"
Gaius pauses, inhaling a breath of dread, "It's not who they are that worries me. It's what they want with Arthur."
โ โ โ
It doesn't take long for Merlin to find out what's going on. Late in the night, while the entire castle was sleeping, he ventured into the woods, following Aulfric to get to the bottom of their mysterious plan. Calliope is having a peaceful breakfast with Gaius when he bursts through the door, talking way too fast for either of them to understand a word.
When he finally calms down and talks normally, Gaius is amazed by his words, "Avalon-- what you saw at the lake-- it's Avalon. It must be."
"What's-"
Gaius doesn't allow him to finish his question, "The land of eternal youth! Mortals are only supposed to glimpse it the moment before death."
Merlin's eyes widen, "I've seen it, and I'm still here."
Gaius's face is still in a state of shock as Calliope glances at him, "Extraordinary. What did it look like?"
Merlin shakes his head, "Does it matter? They're going to sacrifice Arthur!"
"Not if I have anything to do with it," Calliope says, stepping in.
The young sorcerer turns to her, "We don't even know who they are yet."
"We do now," Gaius interjects as he hurries to grab one of his many intricate books. "I found writing like this on the top of Aulfric's staff." Gaius flips to the correct page. "It's Ogham, an ancient script," Gaius points to the foreign letters as he reads off the text, then he turns to Merlin and Calliope as he translates, "To hold life and death in your hands."
Calliope leans back, "What does that mean exactly?"
"From the writing on the staff and what you saw at the lake, I am now certain. We're dealing with the Sidhe.
The Sidhe? Calliope had only heard about this race of magical creatures in legends. She had no idea they actually existed.
Merlin looks to Gaius, "That does not sound like a good thing."
"They're masters of enchantment."
"You think Arthur's been enchanted?"
Gaius nods, glancing between the two of them, "Almost certainly." His eyes return to the book. "I'm afraid Morgana's dream is coming true."
Calliope doesn't hesitate to act, "We have to find Arthur and break this enchantment before they can sacrifice him."
Merlin agrees, but before either of them can move an inch, a subtle knock echoes against the door. A guard pops his head into the room, "Prince Arthur has summoned the royal court."
Oh shit.
That can't be good.
Thousands of possible explanations flutter through her thoughts as Calliope follows Merlin to the throne room. She almost feels bad for yelling at him so much --seeing now that he was just enchanted by someone who wants to sacrifice him-- but then she remembers the many times he's agitated her without an enchantment, and she decides her rampage is justified.
Calliope's blood boils at the sight of Princess Sophia standing beside Arthur as they face King Uther with the entire royal court looking to each other in confusion as to why the Prince has summoned them. Calliope laces her hands together, withholding the urge to confront Sophia and Aulfric as she watches the Prince step towards his father.
"I requested this audience, Father, to discuss a matter of great importance," King Uther looks at his son through several papers that have preoccupied his mind. "It cannot have escaped your attention that Lady Sohpia Tirmawr have grown very close."
Calliope rolls her eyes as the King gives Sophia a nervous glance, "Not too close I hope."
"We're in love."
Calliope cannot deny the slight pinch of her heart, even though she knows it's not real. She shakes off the uncomfortable feeling as Arthur continues.
"Which is why I come before you today to ask your permission to marry."
Marry? Her heart clenches even more.
An awkward silence envelops the room, Calliope's heart pounding as she awaits Uther's reaction.
For once, Calliope is grateful for Uther as he laughs in the Prince's face, not taking this seriously at all.
"I assume you're joking."
Arthur shakes his head as Sophia stands behind him with a smug expression. Her eyes meet Calliope's, and Calliope responds with a glare that says, 'watch your back bitch' because she is going to shove her sword through that little liar's neck.
"No. I'm going to marry her."
"But you only met two days ago."
Arthur's eyes are void of anything as he stares at his father through his deep enchantment, "We're in love," he insists.
"In love," Uther looks down before facing his son again. "We had no idea you were such a romantic, had we Morgana?"
Morgana, who looks just as worried and angered as Calliope, nods "No, he's full of surprises."
"I'm going to marry her. I don't care what either of you think about it."
Obvious irritation covers Uther's face, "I thought you had come to ask my permission."
"Out of courtesy. Nothing more," Arthur turns, grabbing Sophia's hand as the two of them walk towards the door with Aulfric behind them.
But, the King has no intention of letting them go, "Guards, door," the guards close the throne room doors and stand in front of it with steadfast patience as King Uther hands his papers to the councilman beside him.
Uther stands from his throne, the afternoon sun filtering through the windows behind him as he places his hands on his hips.
"Have you forgotten whose court you're standing in?"
"You won't stop me," Arthur persists. "If I want to marry her, I will."
Uther doesn't miss a beat, "Arrest Sophia and Aulfric Tirmawr."
The guards immediately come forward to grab Sophia and her father as Arthur walks to his father in a rage that isn't really isn't his.
"What are you doing?"
"And inform the executioner that his services will be needed tomorrow morning."
Arthur locks eyes with his father, "You can't do this."
"Yes, I can!" Uther says in a powerful tone. "And unless you show me some respect, I will!"
The Prince's head hangs in defeat as his father's overwhelming stare stays on his face before glancing to the guards.
"Release them," the guards step back as Uther's tone returns to normal. "You've got your whole life ahead of you. Sophia is no doubt your first love, but she certainly won't be the only one. Enjoy yourself while you can."
With his father's final words resonating on his face, Arthur turns and walks out of the room with Sophia and Aulfric. Calliope turns around, facing Merlin with her eyes flashing in panic.
"Sophia isn't going to let Uther's disapproval stop her plan."
Merlin nods, "You're right. We need to go after Arthur and make sure he doesn't do anything stupid."
โ โ โ
Peeking into Arthur's room with Merlin, Calliope can see that he's packing his things. Of course, Sophia convinced him to run away with her. It seems they're quickly running out of time, but Calliope is willing to do whatever it takes to stop Sophia and Aulfric.
The enchantment is strong, and she doubts she or Merlin will be able to get through to him, but all they can do is try at this point. If not plan B is just as effective, and plan B entails knocking him out and locking him in Merlin's room while they deal with Sophia and her father.
Merlin walks into the room first, "Get out," he gets an icy greeting from the Prince.
"I thought the King was a bit harsh."
"I don't need sympathy, Merlin, especially not from you."
"But I do think he had a point."
Arthur turns to him angrily, "I ordered you to get out. Now, leave me!"
Calliope takes his agitation with Merlin as her cue as she gently steps into the room, "Arthur," his eyes drift to Calliope as she takes a deep breath. She swears she sees them soften, even if it's only for a split second. "Just... calm down. Merlin's only trying to help."
"Calliope, what are you doing here?" He asks in a daze as the enchantment grips him even harder in her presence.
She moves past Merlin, walking to stand right in front of him and careful not to break eye contact with him, "Arthur, listen to my voice," she keeps her tone smooth, alluring him to only see her; to only listen to her through the constant noise in his brain keeping him at bay from his true self. "This isn't you," she says gently, leaning closer to him. "You don't want to marry Sophia. It's all a lie," she moves her hand to the side of his head, her soft touch mesmerizing him. "I know you're still in there. You just need to fight her. She's enchanting you."
And as Calliope thinks she's starting to break through to him; as he leans closer to her, his eyes locked with hers in an intense trance like she's the sight of a glistening shore after months on the raging storm of the engulfing sea, a voice rises from the door.
"I told you people would try to keep us apart."
Every inch of him she had started to bring back vanished from his face as Sophia and her father enter the room.
"I know," Arthur says to her, and Calliope faces Sophia with the urge to beat her to an unrecognizable pulp. "I won't let that happen."
"Don't listen to her! She's controlling you," Merlin insists.
Sophia walks closer to Arthur, "We can elope together and get away from this place; these people."
Calliope steps in front of the Prince, "Stay back."
Merlin points his finger at Aulfric, "I saw you. I followed him. They're planning to sacrifice you."
Aulfric chuckles, "You let your servant talk to your guests this way?"
"I know what you're going to do because I followed you to the lake, and I heard everything!" Merlin desperately turns to Arthur. "You have to believe me!"
"He's telling the truth, Arthur," Calliope says with a pleading tone.
Arthur seems to be in and out of his enchantment as he sways with uncertainty, "Don't listen to them, Arthur. Let's go. Let's leave tonight."
"She's going to kill you! Merlin exclaims. "Sophia plans to sacrifice you to buy a life of immortality. If you go with her, you'll die."
Arthur, still in a state of delirious confusion, shakes his head as he blinks several times, "It doesn't make sense. We're in love."
"They're magical beings!" Merlin yells. "Look at the writing on the staff-"
Merlin attempts to grab Aulfirc's staff, but he shields it away from him, his eyes flashing a bright red color. Merlin backs away as Calliope steps closer to Arthur to shield him from the creatures.
"Look at his eyes. Look at him. Do you believe me now? Arthur, do you see?"
As Arthur turns to Merlin, Calliope gasps. His eyes have also turned bright red, and he is under the complete control of Sophia and Aulfric.
"I see everything."
Calliope looks between the creatures and Arthur before turning to Merlin, unsure of what their plan should be now.
Merlin lurches at Aulfric, and Calliope takes that as her cue to finally beat the shit out of Sophia, but before she can get a hand on her, a violent blue light shoots out of Aulfric's staff. Calliope feels a burning pain in her chest as her vision goes dark. The last thing she feels is her body colliding with the cold floor of Arthur's room.
And then, everything fades away.
โ โ โ
A low humming flickers through the back of her mind as Calliope slowly regains consciousness. It's a familiar voice; a soft and calming harmony that puts her soul at ease. She would recognize that voice anywhere. A smile lifts her lips as her eyes slowly blink open.
"Mom?"
As Calliope comes back to her senses, she sees that she's not in her old house. She's in her room in Camelot, and her mother is nowhere to be seen. The comforting humming has stopped, replaced by a thick silence as the first tendrils of daylight bleed through her window.
Then, her eyes widen as her memories flood her brain.
Arthur.
Jumping from her bed, Calliope grabs her sword and rushes out of her room. She finds Gaius sitting at the table, and he immediately stands.
"Calliope, thank goodness. I thought you would never wake up."
"Where's Merlin?" She asks.
"He went after Aulfric and Sophia. They have Arthur. We tried to wake you-" Gaius doesn't get another word out as Calliope walks past him. "Calliope! Calliope, wait-"
The door slams shut behind her as she heads for the stables. She doesn't allow anything to distract her as she saddles a horse as fast as she can. She hoists herself onto the saddle and kicks the horse's side.
Moments later, she's riding out of the city in a blur, not bothering to yell for people to get out of her way, almost trampling several citizens as her horse gallops out of the gate. She rides into the forest heading in the direction of the lake and only stopping to track Merlin's footprints in the dirt.
Her mind is racing as she hopes Merlin arrived at the lake in time to stop the sacrifice. Her heart beats quickly as she hears yelling in the distance. Calliope urges her horse to run even faster as she listens to the echoes carried by the wind.
Calliope jumps down from the saddle at the sight of a clearing. She grips the steady handle of her sword with fierceness as she runs to the clearing, bursting through the thick foliage just in time to see Aulfric blast into thin air as Merlin wields the staff. Sophia lets out a loud cry as Merlin points the staff at her, and moments later, she explodes into oblivion with a bright flash of blue light.
Merlin doesn't hesitate as he takes off his jacket and sprints for the lake. Arthur is nowhere in sight as Calliope runs to the edge of the water. Merlin trudges through the heavy lake as quickly as he can.
"Arthur! Arthur!"
Calliope holds her breath, her body paralyzed with worry as Merlin dives under the surface. A few seconds of stillness pass and she scans over the lake with fear.
"Merlin?"
Nothing.
"Merlin?!"
The young sorcerer shoots out of the water with the unconscious Prince, and Calliope lets out a giant breath of relief. Merlin struggles to carry his weight to shore, and Calliope helps him drag Arthur onto the ground.
Calliope puts her fingers to his neck and is overjoyed when she feels his faint pulse, "He's alive," she glances to Merlin. "We need to get him to Gaius. I'll get my horse."
And then, they hoist Arthur onto the saddle, heading back to Camelot once again saving Prince Arthur from certain death.
โ โ โ
It isn't until late in the evening that Arthur begins to stir. Calliope sits beside his bed with Gaius and Merlin as he groans with his eyes still closed.
Calliope hasn't taken much time to process her feelings; well, she hardly ever lets herself do that, but on this rare occasion she reflects on the events of the past three days. She remembers feeling determined to save Arthur, no matter what she had to do, and she remembers an awful cutting sensation through her heart when Arthur announced he was in love with Sophia, even though she knew it was an enchantment.
The reality is... Calliope cares about Arthur. It's hard to admit after so many years of feeling nothing at all. She believed --for so long-- that emotions are weak. They give your enemies something to use against you, but maybe that isn't true.
But maybe it is.
If Sepharin finds out that she cares for Arthur, he'll use that to get Calliope right where he wants her. She has to stay strong; she has to keep her real feelings locked away tightly, and then after Sepharin is dead...
No, she can't think that far ahead; not when she's still tied to the blood wraiths. It's too dangerous for Arthur to get any closer to her.
"Arthur?" Merlin asks as he stirs again.
With his eyes still closed, the Prince finally speaks, "What happened?" Gaius looks to Merlin and Calliope. "Where am I?"
"Can you remember anything?" Merlin asks the Prince as he slowly sits up.
He groans in pain as his hand goes to his head, "Oh, my head." He furrows his eyebrows as a few memories seem to come back to him. "There was a girl... Sophia... I asked my father something about her. I asked him..." He stops, the realization coming to him as he sits up straight with a look of utter unbelief on his face. "What was I thinking?" He asks in shock.
Calliope holds back laughter as Merlin answers, "Well, we did wonder, especially when you eloped with her last night."
"I did what?!" Arthur exclaims, looking between the three people by his bed.
Calliope nods, leaning back with a smug look, "Yeah, you're only further proving my point that you're a fucking idiot."
Gaius looks at him, "Merlin had to bring you back to Camelot."
Arthur seems to have a hard time believing them, "I don't recall any of this."
"It must have been some blow," Gaius says as he looks to Merlin and Calliope.
"What blow?"
Merlin replies, "Well, when I caught up to you I couldn't persuade you to return. You were beyond reason. So, I had to make you."
Arthur raises his eyebrows, "You managed to knock me out?"
"Yep, with a lump of wood."
"He only did it to bring you back safely," Gauis adds.
Arthur swiftly points his finger at all three of them, "No one can know about this," he says in a serious voice. "Any of it. Is that understood?" The three people across from them nod, and as they begin to leave, the Prince calls out one last thing. "Calliope, can I speak with you for a moment?"
Calliope looks back to Gaius and Merlin as they hurry out of the room with sly knowing grins. She rolls her eyes at them as she sits back down across from the Prince. His striking blue eyes dance with her gaze nervously as he tries to think of what he wants to say to her.
"I just wanted to say..." he trails off for a moment,. "I don't remember feeling anything for Sophia. I have no bloody clue why on earth I wanted to marry her-"
"Arthur, it's okay," Calliope stops him from saying anything else. "It was just a major lapse in judgment."
He nods, his gaze never leaving hers, "I do remember you yelling at me a lot, but that's nothing out of the ordinary, and I suppose I deserved it."
"Oh, you definitely deserved it," Calliope jokes, causing him to roll his eyes and smile lightly.
"You know, I expected you to be a lot angrier at me."
"Why?" Calliope asks, breaking her eyes away from his as she tries to hide her true feelings. "Even if you really did want to marry Sophia, I don't think my opinion would matter very much to you."
Calliope's heart leaps when she feels his hand grab her own with such a gentleness she could have never guessed him to possess. Her eyes slowly drift from the floor up to his; he's looking at her in a way that makes her want to melt under his touch; like he's been struggling to breathe properly his entire life, and then she comes along as a breath of fresh air which keeps him steady.
"Calliope," he says, barely above a whisper, a small intake of a breath in his tone. "Your opinion means a lot more to me than you think."
The warmness of his hand holding hers floats to her chest. It intensifies when he dares to move closer, "Well, I do tend to be right about everything." She tries to joke through her nerves, but he catches the slight rise of her voice, surprise etching over his face.
She's unsure what to do as he continues to stare deeply into her eyes, as if he's standing before a cavern with thousands of branching alcoves. She feels herself naturally drifting closer to him, but when the Prince's gaze drifts down to their intertwined hands, spotting the rough scars around her wrists, his eyebrows furrow. Before he can ask about them, she quickly clears her throat, pulling her hand away from his and standing up.
"You should probably get some rest." He nods, laying his head back on his pillow. "I guess I'll see you later."
His gaze catches her one last time, "See you later."
And then, she leaves his room in a hurry, overwhelmed by the many things Prince Arthur can make her feel at once.
